Gordon, Judy
Progressive Conservative MLA, Lacombe-Stettler
Judy Gordon was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and was raised in Calgary. After graduating from high school she attended Camrose Lutheran College. Moving to the Lacombe area the latter part of 1968, she married her husband Allan in 1969.
From 1973 to 1977 Judy Gordon was employed as an accountant with a chartered accountants' firm. After leaving their firm, she maintained a long standing association with them by doing contract accounting in conjunction with their office. For the next nine years (1977-1986), she was employed with a retail grocery store/rental investment company as Accountant and Office Manager.
Judy Gordon was first elected to Lacombe Town Council in 1986 while continuing to pursue her accounting career on a part-time, self-employed basis. Mrs. Gordon went on to be elected Mayor in October 1989, a position to which she was returned by acclamation in 1992. During her term in office the town's population increased by 16% and Lacombe enjoyed a corresponding increase in building starts and commercial development. A deteriorating downtown core benefited by the implementation of a successful Mainstreet Revitalization project. Another major accomplishment was the development of a 67 acre family orientated multi-use recreational park.
Besides serving on various municipal committees, Mrs. Gordon was a Director for Central Towns' Alberta Urban Municipalities Association Board of Directors, sat on the Executive Committee of the Red Deer Regional Planning Commission, and was the Vice-Chair of the Central Alberta Mayors' Association. During her extensive municipal political career Mrs. Gordon presented numerous workshops throughout the province pertaining to "local government". Mrs. Gordon was nominated in June 1993 by her town council for the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association's Award of Excellence.
Active in both community work and service clubs Mrs. Gordon is past Regent of Lord Lascelles Chapter IODE, has been an active member of the Kinette Club and has enjoyed judging several public speaking competitions.
Judy Gordon was first elected on June 15, 1993 to the Alberta Legislature and again on March 11, 1997 for a second term as MLA for the Lacombe-Stettler constituency. She has been named Chair of the Community Lottery Program Secretariat; Member of the Municipal Government Act Review Committee; and a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. In April 1997, she was acclaimed Deputy Chair of Committees of the Legislative Assembly for the Twenty-Fourth Legislature. Past chairmanships include: Alberta Gaming and Liquor Policy Secretariat; Coordinating Council of Foundations; Lotteries Review Committee; Native Gaming Committee; Ground Ambulance Services Task Force; Regionalization/Amalgamation of School Boards Committee; Standing Committee on Public Affairs. Past member includes: Standing Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food and Rural Development; Jobs and Economy; Health Facilities Review Committee; Grazing Leases Reserves Task Force; Air Ambulance Review Task Force; Expert Advisory Panel for Air Ambulance Requests for Proposal and Contracts; Health Workforce Rebalancing Committee; Health Plan Coordination Project Task Force on Regional Governance; Standing Committee on Private Bills; Standing Committee on Law and Regulation; Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing.
The Gordon's live in Lacombe and have one grown son, Greg.
