Strang, Ivan
Progressive Conservative MLA, West Yellowhead
Ivan Strang was first elected to the Alberta Legislature on March 11, 1997. He currently serves as: Chair, Standing Committee on Public Affairs; Member, Standing Policy Committee on Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection; Member, Task Force on Public Lands; Member, Standing Committee on Private Bills; Member, Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing Committee; and Member, Agricultural Lease Review Committee.
Ivan James Strang was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 1, 1940. His family later moved to Hay River, Northwest Territories, where Ivan completed his high school education.
Ivan worked for Federal Public Works and the Giant Yellowknife Mine prior to moving to Edmonton in 1967 to began a 27 year career in the tire business. He worked with Firestone Tire, Crown Tire Service Ltd and R. Angus Tire Services Ltd. before opening his own tire business. Ivan co-owned and operated the Edson based Tamarack Tire Ltd. for 18 years until selling the business 1994. He served as Chairman for the Goodyear Dealer council from 1982 to 1984.
Mr. Strang's strong belief in community involvement led him to first become a member of the Edson and District Chamber of Commerce. He served both on the Board and as the Chamber's President. In 1984, Mr. Strang received the Alberta Small Business Award.
In 1986 Ivan was elected to serve on the Edson Town Council before becoming Mayor in 1989. He held the position until 1997 when he resigned to seek election as an MLA. During his tenure as Mayor, Ivan worked to help establish a Native Interpretive Trail system and was instrumental in establishing a 20 year infrastructure replacement plan for the town. He also served with the Evergreen Tourism Association, the Tourism Industry Association of Alberta, the Alberta Tourism Partnership Corporation, the Edson Economic Development Committee, the Association of Coal Mining Municipalities of Western Canada, Forest Based Communities in Alberta, West Yellowhead Community Future Development Corporation, Yellowhead Highway Association, Northern Alberta Mayor's Caucus and Special Places 2000 Provincial Coordinating Committee.
Ivan has two daughters and six grandchildren. He lives in Edson with his partner, Tammy DeWinter.
