Paszkowski, Hon. Walter
Progressive Conservative MLA, Grande Prairie-Smoky
Walter Paszkowski was born in Sexsmith on April 23, 1934 and graduated from Sexsmith High School. He attended Fairview Agriculture College and graduated with Honours. He is the owner/operator of a 2000 acre pedigree seed farm and retail seed outlet.
Mr. Paszkowski was elected MLA for the Smoky River constituency on March 20, 1989. During his first term in the Legislature he served as a member on the Select Standing Committees on Laws and Regulations and Public Accounts. Mr. Paszkowski was also Chair of the Beekeeping Industry Advisory Committee, Chair of the Social Care Facilities Review Committee, Chair of the French Language Committee, Vice Chair of the Alberta Grain Commission, Board Member of the Alberta Resources Railway and a Member of the Legislative Review Committee. Following the swearing in of Premier Klein on December 14, 1992, Mr. Paszkowski was appointed Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Financial Planning.
On June 15, 1993, Mr. Paszkowski was re-elected as the MLA for the new constituency of Grande Prairie-Smoky and was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development on June 30, 1993. He served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Agriculture & Rural Development and as a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Financial Planning. On March 11, 1997, Mr. Paszkowski was re-elected as the MLA for Grande Prairie-Smoky and was appointed Minister of Transportation and Utilities on March 26, 1997. He is presently serving as a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Agriculture & Rural Development and as a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Jobs and Economy.
Mr. Paszkowski has been very actively involved in a number of capacities. He is a founding Director of the Northern Alberta Rapeseed Crushing Plant. For 12 years he was a Director of the Alberta Canola Growers, including three as President. He was an Executive Member of the Canola Council of Canada for seven years, including two as Board Chair. Other positions have included: School Board Trustee for nine years; former Hospital Board Director; Councillor for Sexsmith Town Council for almost 11 years; former Mayor of the Town of Sexsmith, and former Director of the Senior Citizen's Home Foundation.
Mr. Paszkowski and his family make their home in Sexsmith where he and hisson Dwayne continue to farm.
