Alice Eveliene (McCarthy) Young
73, Florence
Alice E. (McCarthy) Young, age 73, of Florence passed away Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her caring family.
Born in Hants County, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Ethel Mae (Caldwell) McCarthy.
Alice is survived by her loving husband, James Walter (Lewis); 10 daughters, Patsy (Wallace) Kendall, Marjorie (Maurice) Capstick, Elizabeth (Elmer) Capstick, all of Florence, Barbara (John) Donovan, Dolly (Ches) Miles, both of Sydney Mines, Betty (Reuben) Daly, Susie (Kevin) Musgrave, both of Frenchvale, Holly (Dave) Williams, North Sydney, Sugar (Chuck) Muise, New Waterford, Paula (Gary) Milnes, Barrie, Ont.; one stepdaughter, Agnes (George) Abrahamson, U.S.A.; four sons, Brian (Melinda), Sydney Mines, David (Denise), North Sydney, Billy (Cathy), Scarborough, Ont. and Johnny, at home; 39 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by nine children, Judith Ann, Rose Mary, Mary Florence, James Walter, Lewis James, and four in infancy and granddaughter, Tira Lee Renz.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, 4:30 p.m. from St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with the Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery.

Robert (Bob) D. Clarke
80, North Sydney
Robert (Bob) David Clarke, 80, a resident of Regent Street, North Sydney, passed away on Saturday March, 11, 2000.
Born in Lacine, Quebec, he was a son of the late George Herbert and Mabel (Johnston) Clarke. Bob was a member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church, North Sydney. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving as a Chief Petty Officer Artificer in the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve. He served on Corvettes and Destroyers making many convoy crossings.
After the war he worked as an accomplished machinist at the Marine Railway and later at the Canadian National Railway until his retirement on May 1, 1984. Nicknamed the “Silver Fox” by his fellow machinists, he enjoyed the comradeship of his friends and the challenges of his job. Bob was an avid sportsman and card player.
Bob is survived by his wife the former Shirley Daly, four sons, David (Nan), Ottawa, Tony (Nicola), Halifax, N.S., Shaun (Charlene), Balls Creek and Jamie (Jacqui), Sydney Mines, daughter, Lynn (Mrs. David Stronge), Advocate, N.S., one sister, Margaret (Mrs. Francis MacDonald), Scotch Lake; two brothers, Howard and Conrad, both of North Sydney. Also surviving are five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister in infancy.
Robert David Clarke was a good man and a great father. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will take place today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Services Tuesday 2 p.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Campbell Street, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

J.A.S. Aubrey Ferguson
82, England
J.A.S. Aubrey Ferguson, 82, of Milldale Seaham Durham County, England and formerly of Homeville Cape Breton, died March 2, 2000, in Durham County England.
Born in South Port Morien, he was the son of the late John and Jane (Murrant) Ferguson. He was the last surviving member of the immediate family.
He was with the R.C.A.F. in the Second World War and was shot down over Germany and was a prisoner of war for three years in Stalogluft 3. He was a farmer most of his life in Homeville, Cape Breton.
Mr. Ferguson is survived by his wife Peggy and step-son Johnnie, a step-daughter, Janet Marie, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on March 9, in the Christ Church in Seaham, England. The remains were resting at the Garden Of Remembrance Crematorium.

Eileen Ann MacDonald
70, Glace Bay
Eileen Ann MacDonald, 70 of 17 Steel’s Hill, Glace Bay, age 70, died peacefully Sunday morning, Mar. 12, 2000, at the Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Mary (Quinn) Lee. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay. Eileen loved baking and knitting.
She is survived by her husband Henry, of Steel’s Hill, her daughters, Rita (Russell) Boudreau, Dominion, Mary (Vince) Parsons, Glace Bay, Leanna, Toronto, Sheri, Glace Bay and sons, Joseph (Ann), Glace Bay, Roy (Loretta), Glace Bay and Earl, Glace Bay; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Charlie and Johnnie (Gem), both of Glace Bay and Tommy (Carol) Lee, Toronto.
Eileen was predeceased by her four brothers, Adrian, William, Lionel (Evangeline), Jimmy and one sister Mary Lee.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthonys Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Eileen, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Sarah (Sadie) MacFarlane
83, Sydney
Sarah MacFarlane, 83, of MacGillivray Guest Home and formerly of 26 Thomas St., Sydney, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, March 12, 2000.
Born at Gillis Lake, she was the daughter of the late Ronald (Rannie) and Annie (MacIntyre) Gillis of Gillis Lake. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and was a very active member of the C.W.L. Sarah will be fondly remembered by the many people who knew her when she worked in the coffee shop and in the sewing room at St. Rita Hospital.
She is survived by three sons, Joe (Mary), London, Ontario, Ron (Alana), Sydney River, and Ray (Gwen), Lake Ainslie, two sisters, Theresa (Stan) Krszwda, Sydney, and Catherine (Kay) MacDonald, East Bay, and one brother, Jimmie (Josette), Gillis Lake, six grandchildren, Ian, Heather, and Shannon, Sydney River, and Scott, Natalie, and Jennifer, Ontario. Sarah will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews and friends and neighbours who enjoyed her company so much.
Besides her parents, Sarah was predeceased by her husband Archie, her son Jimmie, her brothers, Joseph and Johnny, and her sister Martha MacKinnon.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 14, from 2-4 and 7-9, at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Alexandra St., Sydney, with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sarah’s memory may be made to the MacGillivray Guest Home.

Joseph Patrick MacGillivray
61, Glace Bay
Joseph Patrick MacGillivray, 61, of 129 Commercial St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday March 10, 2000.
Born in Bridgeport, he was a son of the late Charles and Catherine (Walsh) MacGillivray. He worked for the street department, Town of Glace Bay; spent three years in the Brotherhood of the Friars of Atonement, New York; and then worked for many years in the X-Ray department of St. Joseph’s Hospital, retiring in 1981.
Joe is survived by his sons, Blair, at home, and Shane, Glace Bay; by brothers, Pius (Rosemary), Jimmy (Bernadette), Ralph (Margie), Jerry (Lorraine), all of Glace Bay and Peter (Joanne) of New Waterford; sisters Mae (Edwin) Graham, Sadie (Lawrence) Donovan and Cecelia MacGillivray, all of Glace Bay. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Danny, John (Buddy), Naish and Charlie.
Visitation will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. A private burial will be scheduled for a later date.
Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or charity of choice.
