David James Springall

David James Springall, 57, of 88 Veinotte Dr., Bridgewater, formerly of New Waterford, C.B., N.S., passed away suddenly at home, Wednesday, July 9, 2003.

Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late David and Muriel (Ferguson) Springall.

He joined the airforce in 1970 and served for 25 years in the Communications Research Trade before retirement in 1995.

He was presently employed by the Corps of Commissionaires in Bridgewater.

He enjoyed nature, wildlife, fishing, had a loving nature and enjoyed a good laugh. He had a big heart and an abundant love for his family and his many friends.

He will be sadly missed by his surviving wife, Patricia (Brownlee); son, Brandon, at home; daughters, Peggy Jean (John) Vezina, Ottawa, Laura (Jason) Maat, Ottawa, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Ottawa; stepson, Michael, Ottawa; stepdaughter, Nicole, New Market, Ont.; brother, Gary Springall, Plymouth, Pictou Co.; sisters, Katherine Springall, Mira, Sandra (Jim) Lefeuvre, New Waterford, Marion (Ervin) Williams, New Waterford; grandchildren, Christopher, Noah, Sabrina, Gabriel, and Kaitlyn.

Visitation will take place Saturday, July 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (basilr@vjmcgillivray.com). Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13 in Calvin United Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.

Tawny (Poirier) McKinnon

Tawny (Poirier) McKinnon, 14, of 456 8th St., New Waterford, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at the IWK Hospital, Halifax.

Born at the Toronto General Hospital, Tawny was the daughter of Wayne and Angela (Poirier) McKinnon.

She was a Grade 8 French Immersion student at Whitney Pier Memorial School. Tawny loved music from rap to classical as well as poetry.

Besides her parents, she is also survived by maternal grandparents, Priscilla Brown and Ron Poirier; paternal grandmother, Regis (Williams) McKinnon; two sisters, Crysta and Brya, at home and brother, Ayric, at home,

Tawny was predeceased by her paternal grandparent, Theo McKinnon.

Visitation will take place today (Thursday) from 6-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, (basilr@vjmcgillivray.com). Funeral mass will be celebrated in Mt. Carmel Church, Friday at 11 a.m., Fr. Lester Marchand officiating. Cremation to follow.

No flowers please. By the request of the family, donations in Tawny's memory may be made to Ronald McDonald House or the IWK Hospital.

Cletus Joseph DeLong

Cletus Joseph DeLong age 74 of Amherst died Tuesday July 8, 2003 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Upper Nappan, N.S. Born in Cape Breton, N.S., he was a son of the late Harry and Venus (Burke) DeLong.

He worked for Ducks Unlimited as a surveyor. Cletus enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing, hunting and trapping muskrats and beavers. Cletus also liked to spend time at his camp and with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife the former Doreen LeBlanc, two daughters; Christine Eagles of Amherst, and Ellen (Steven) Shay of Truro, N.S., one son; Steven (Jennifer) DeLong of Amherst, two sisters; Mary Ogles and Phyllis Paul both of Amherst, one brother; Renee (Betty) DeLong of Amherst, mother-in-law; Florence LeBlanc of Amherst, six grandchildren; Amy and Darren Coates, Nicholas Eagles, Jason and Adam Shay, Danielle and Emily DeLong, and one great grandchild; Allison Coates, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by a son Cletus in infancy, twin sister Frances, brother Henry and sister Ellen.

Cremation has taken place. By request of the family there will be no Visitation or Funeral Service. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. (667-9906)

Donations in Cletus memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Marie E. Ratchford

Marie E. Ratchford, 69, of 146 Daley Rd., New Victoria, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late James and Bessie (Coleman) Postlethwaite.

Marie was a member of St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria, and a former member of the St. Joseph's Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, bingo and going to the casino.

Surviving are her husband, John R. Ratchford, New Victoria; daughters, Catherine (John), Sydney, Lisa (Henk) Keultjes, Scarborough, Ont.; sisters, Rosalie (Vincent) MacKinnon, Sydney, Marjorie Gill, Whitney Pier, Nora (Lindsay) LeJeune, Sydney, Carol Kerr, Sydney River; brothers, James, Sydney, Thomas, Bobby, both of Ontario; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by a son, John in infancy and three brothers.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 4, 2003 in St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Donations in Marie's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Kenneth Boutilier

Kenneth Boutilier, 49, of 1 McKeigans Lane, Glace Bay, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at home.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Michael Fabian and Florence (Wilson) Boutilier.

Kenny was a member of Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay.

He was a former employee of Wilson Burner and Heater Service and Otto Strong Burner Service in Glace Bay.

Kenny had a great love for baseball and animals, especially dogs.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by one son, Fabian Wilson Boutilier, Alberta; three brothers, John T., Ontario, Steve, Glace Bay, and Billy, Sydney; eight sisters, Glenda, Glace Bay, Kay King (Herb), Glace Bay, Elaine Strong (Allan), Glace Bay, Dolena Harte (David), Glace Bay, Remigus Jones (Allan), Glace Bay, Mary Arlene, Glace Bay, Leslie MacDonald (Blair), Glace Bay, Cheryl Mischiek, Brampton, Ont.; two granddaughters, Shelby and Shyanne; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kenny was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Gordon and one sister, Cynthia.

Visitation will take place Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Fr. John Graham will officiate the funeral mass, Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church. Cremation to follow. Interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy for Kenny donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
