MARTIN, Annie Alberta "Bertie",
Pictou
MARTIN, Annie Alberta "Bertie" - 85 of the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou and
formerly of Church Street, Pictou passed away March 7, 2016 in the home. Born in
Hillside, Pictou County on May 9, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Clarence &
Zelma "Zally" (MacNeil) Falconer. She was the youngest of the seven Falconer
girls, and was the last surviving member. In 1952 she met Harold Martin, who was
passing through from his home in New Zealand. They were married for almost 43
years, until his passing in 1995. For 30 years Bertie rented properties in Pictou and
was a well known and well liked landlady. Bertie's greatest accomplishment,
though, was her family and was proud that her five children got a solid education
and are down-to-earth, kind people. Bertie is survived by her five children, Anne
Gratton (Jack), Pictou; Bill (Tammy), Tanner Hill; Jack (Laura), Braeshore; Jim
(Barb), Pictou; and Noella, Halifax; 10 grandchildren; and many great
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Harold John "HJ" Martin,
much beloved grandson Dale Dennis, and sisters Clara Knowles, Esther MacIsaac,
Girldie Cook, Angie Flagg, Joyce Willis and Maisie Diggins. Bertie loved getting
good deals at auctions and yard sales and had a great sense of humor and was kind
to all animals. Many people will remember Harold and Bertie walking their dogs in
Pictou. The Martin household always had a dog and at least one cat. Her most
recent pets, Lacey the dog and Mittsy the cat, have already found new homes with
Bertie's daughters. Visitation will be from 2-4 & 7-9 PM on Thursday in the
McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Friday in
First Presbyterian Church, Pictou. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial
will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Family flowers only please. Donations
in Bertie's memory may be made to the Pictou County S.P.C.A. The Martin family
would like to thank the wonderful staff and residents at the Shiretown Nursing

CLARKE, D. F. “Donnie”
Pictou
It is with shock and sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Fulton
“Donnie” Clarke, age 71, of Pictou, on March 6, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital,
New Glasgow after a sudden illness. Born in New Glasgow on September 19,
1944, he was a son of the late Fulton & Beulah (MacDonald) Clarke. After
working many years at the Pictou Shipyard and Trenton Works, Donnie embarked
upon a new adventure and went out west to work in the camps, where he met many
and made some wonderful friends. Donnie prided himself in his work and loved to
be busy, and could often be seen mowing his lawn, washing his cars, or going to
Tim’s for an early morning visit with friends. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens
fan and enjoyed showing others his collection of hockey memorabilia. He is
survived by his loving wife, Leona (Landry); daughter, Dawn (Bill) Gorman; son
David (Wanda); all of Pictou. He was so very proud of his four grandchildren,
Marley (Tom), of Ottawa; Kevin, Kaleb and Namara, of Pictou. He is also
survived by brothers, Russell (Emma), Brian (Jean), Ronnie (Janice), Pictou; and
numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday in
McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM Thursday in
Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Don Boudreau
officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke
Foundation, the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, or a charity of your choice. We
would like to acknowledge Dr. Randy Burrill, Dr. Gerry Farrell, and the nurses at
the Aberdeen Hospital (Palliative Care, ICU, and Emergency) for their care and
compassion. Donnie was blessed with wonderful friends and family. We could
not have made it through this difficult time without you. Thank You.
HARTSON, Chesley E.
Pictou
It is with broken hearts that the family of Chesley Elliott Hartson, age 83, of
Pictou, announce his passing, on February 12, 2016, at Oceanview Continuing
Care Centre in Eastern Passage, surrounded by his children and best friend, Sylvia
Keith. Born in Phillips Harbour, Ches was the son of the late George Hartson and
Edith Cummings. He is survived by his sister, Dolena Thorne; his children, Susan
Simpson (Claude), Cindy Hartson (Wayne), Margie MacKinnon (Joe), Bill
Hartson (Patricia); eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Ches was
predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Winnie and his sister, Maisie Davidson.
Ches was a hardworking man and held various jobs throughout his life, retired
from Michelin, Granton, in 1991 and as a School Bus Driver. He relayed many
funny stories of his days at those companies. He was proud of his work ethic and
had a strong commitment to providing for his family. He was a very resilient man,
shown more profoundly when ALS became more advanced and he continued on
with each new adjustment, always finding ways to laugh and smile. He surprised
many in the later few years of his life at his ability to use his iPad to communicate.
Upon entering Oceanview, he loved helping other people and trying to make them
smile. Ches enjoyed hockey (playing in his younger years and an avid Pittsburg
fan in later years), bowling (proud of his many trophies) and Newfie music. He
and his wife, Winnie, were often found at the local dances showing their prowess
around the dance floor. Ches was often found entertaining people with his jokes
and loved playing tricks on fellow employees, friends and family. We would like
to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Oceanview Continuing Care Centre
for their care and assistance allowing our father to pass with dignity. A graveside
service will be held on March 12th, 2016 at 2pm in the St. James Cemetery,
Division Road, Pictou, NS. Following this service a reception will be held at St.
James Anglican Church Hall, Denoon St., Pictou. In lieu of flowers, donations in
his memory may be made to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia or Oceanview
Continuing Care Centre. www.mclarenfuneral.ca
