HORNE, Linda Ann - 51, Davis Lane, Cole Harbour, died April 18, 1999, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Hamilton, Ont., she was a daughter of Ray Lewis, Hamilton, Ont., and Edna (VanFleet) Lewis, Burlington, Ont. She was employed with Superstore Ltd., Dartmouth, for 22 years, where she held the position of front-end manager. She took pride in the activities of her grandchildren and was always willing to be there for others. Surviving are her husband, George; sons, Stephen, Mark, at home; daughter, Coreena, at home; sisters, Janice, Nancy, Toronto; four grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Cole Harbour. Memorial service 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pope John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, Colby Village, Rev. James Richards officiating. Reception to follow at 1703 Cole Harbour Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

SCOTT, Marjorie Mary - 87, Middleton, died April 19, 1999, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late John M. and Pearl A. (Spinney) Roop. She was an Abbie Sister, played hockey and baseball in Charlottetown. She was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church, Charlottetown, and an active with the Girl Guides of Canada. Survived by her husband, Donald; sons Donald, Bridgetown; J. Stuart, Dartmouth; sister, Joan Cobb, Charlottetown; brother, John D. Roop, Falls Church, Va.; grandchildren, Craig, Donald and Melita, and great-granddaughter, Caitlyn. Memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, Rev. Ewen Moase officiating. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford, in 1975; sister, Elsie; brothers, Thomas, Frederick; twin brothers in infancy, Edgar and Cameron. Born in St. Joseph, he was a son of the late Joseph and Beatrice (Doucet) Comeau. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his wife, the former Bernadette Melanson, Villa Acadienne; daughters, Celeste Robichaud, St. Joseph; Cecile Comeau, Antigonish; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter. She is survived by her husband, Curtis; sons, Lorne and wife Marilyn, Blaine and wife Elizabeth; grandsons, Craig and Brett, all of Bridgewater. SIMPKINS, James John - 92, 1333 South Park St., Halifax, passed away April 23, 1999, in New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in December 22, 1906, in Penge, England, he was the son of the late James Todd and Sarah (Chalkey) Simpkins. He came to Canada and resided in Moncton, N.B., where he received his early education. He was vice-president of T.P. Calkin Ltd., branch manager of the Halifax division of T.P. Calkin Ltd., and an active member of Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating. He was also a life member of the Halifax Curling Club, a past member of the Waegwoltic Club and was an adherent of First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Hazel Graham; daughter, Sandra Gibbs (Brian), Calgary; granddaughters, Heather Gibbs (Bryce Williams) and Katherine Gibbs, both of Calgary; brother, Arthur, Toronto, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, John, and sister, Rose. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in First Baptist Church, Oxford Street, Halifax, Rev. Timothy MacFarland officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. AIKENS, Margaret Agnes "Maggie" - 86, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in the manor. She was a daughter of the late Perry E. and Stella (Powell) Aikens. She was a resident of New Glasgow for most of her life and had been a guest of the manor since 1979. She was employed for many years in the men's department of the former Goodman Co. Ltd., New Glasgow. She was an adherent of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow. She is survived by sister, Mrs. Lois MacKenzie, Ontario; cousin, Robert P. MacKay, Bookline, Mass., and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister, Frances Leithead, and brother, E. Powell Aikens. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. from H.W. Angus Funeral Home chapel, New Glasgow, with Rev. Charles MacPherson officiating. Burial will be in the Sea View Cemetery, Pictou.

SMITH, Edward G. - 74, Dartmouth, died February 7, 1999, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Toronto, he was the son of the late Harry Dewhurst Smith and Mrs. Nellie (Harmon) (Smith) Duburgess, Toronto. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas. He worked at Canadian Tire, main store, in Toronto and Tacoma Drive, Dartmouth, for 32 years until retirement. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, doing jigsaw puzzles and playing snooker. Surviving are his wife, the former Iris Robinson; son, Ted, at home; daughter, Valerie (Mrs. John Hannah), Colborne, Ont.; a granddaughter; sisters, Mrs. Nellie Stewart, Niagara Falls, Ont.; Dorothy (Mrs. Paul McNair), Toronto; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Edna Whittingstall (Toronto). Cremation will take place. Memorial service 6 p.m. Thursday in Woodlawn United Church, Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth, Rev. Gordon Murray officiating. Donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
HUDSON, Roy Fisher, QC
HUDSON, Roy Fisher, QC - Died April 15, 1999, in his 79th years, at home in Baddeck, with his family present. He was a son of the late Harold and Sarah (Fisher) Hudson. Fisher served overseas during the Second World War with Bomber Command. He attended Mount Allison University and Dalhousie Law School. At the time of his death, he was in his 50th year as a member of the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society, practicing in Baddeck. Fisher was awarded his Queen's Counsel in 1964. He was the charter president of the Baddeck Lions Club, and active in many other community organizations. A lifelong member of the Progressive Conservative Party, he was first elected MLA for Victoria County in May 1967. He served as MLA from 1967 to 1974 and again from 1980 to 1988. He served in the Provincial Cabinet as Minister of the Environment, Housing, Recreation and finally, Tourism. He was a member of the Cape Breton Highlands Golf Club for may years and was also an active player at Bell Bay Golf Course. Fisher was a member of Stormont Lodge 96 and was affiliated with Queen's 34. He received his 50-year jewel September 6, 1996. He is survived by his wife, the former Noreen Ward; sons, Brian, Lower Sackville; Sandy (Janice) and Stewart (Louise), Baddeck; Graham (Linette), West Bay; daughters, Elaine (Gregor) Allison, Baddeck, and June (Jim) MacKenzie, Middle River; brother, Bruce, Ashdale; sisters, Helen Anderson, Burnaby, B.C., and Mina (Harold) Sinclair, Argyle; eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Claude. The body is resting at MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck, with visiting hours 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today and Saturday and from where a Masonic service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, in Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, with Rev. David Lutes and Rev. Charles Donovan officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

GREGOR, Frederick M. "Fred" - 84, 343-12th St., New Waterford, died, December 4, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Jean and Fred Gregor. He was a member of Calvin United Church, he retired from employment at A. Schwartz and Co. after 28 years. He operated various businesses in New Waterford, most notably the Paramount Theatre. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford. He served our country in the Second World War as a member of both the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force. His two main hobbies were gardening and jazz music, although he appreciated all styles of music. Surviving are his wife Katie (Dickson); son, Robert, Sydney; two grandchildren; brother Harry, North Sydney; sisters, Ruth, Bras D'Or; Shirley, New Waterford; several nieces; nephews; grandnieces; grandnephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Vera MacDonald, Doris Robinson. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in MacGillivary's Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday in Calvin United Church, Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. 12 p.m. Monday, remains will be taken to church. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

SMILEY, I. Beatrice - 92, Gladys M. Manning Memorial Home, Windsor, formerly of Mayfield Avenue, Halifax, passed away on Sunday, December 12, 1999, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Brookfield, Colchester Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Franz) Lockhart. She was a local school teacher for 25 years, having taught at Three Mile Plains, St. Croix, Egerton, Brookfield and in the Halifax-Fairview area. She had formerly worked at Simpson's, Halifax; the Palliser Restaurant, Truro and was a governess in Boston, Mass. She was a writer and had several articles published in her early years. She also enjoyed dancing, playing piano and had sang in many choirs. She was a very active community worker until her death. She was a member of Bayers Road United Baptist Church, Halifax, and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by sons, Douglas and wife Josefina "Fina", Sackville; Alexander "Sandy" and wife Cheryl, Kanata, Ont.; grandchildren, David Smiley, Kanata; Kathleen Smiley, London, England. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe A. Smiley; brother, Percy Lockhart; sisters, Winnifred "Winnie" Lockhart, Ethel MacNeil, Belle Walker, Florence Ellis, Alice Robinson, Muriel Armstrong. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, in the chapel, Rev.
