SMITH, Colena Ann - 60, 263 Brookside Ave., New Glasgow, died Friday, September 11, 1998, in Aberdeen Hospital. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of Dougalda (Todd) (Mac-Gillivray) Smith, New Glasgow, and the late Donald Edgar Smith. She was secretary and sales clerk at Ross Fur and Ladies Wear for the past 25 years. She enjoyed modeling at the various fashion shows. She was a member of Trinity United Church and former Boy Scout leader. Surviving are her mother; son, Todd Anthony, Eastern Passage; sister, Frances Stewart, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Alexandra, Zack and Jake; nephew, Donnie Stewart and wife Della, New Glasgow. DILLMAN, Margaret MacKay (Pearl)
DILLMAN, Margaret MacKay (Pearl) - 86, died peacefully at home on September 6, 1998, in St. Alexandre d'Iberville, Que., where she resided for the past four years. Born in Montreal, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Rose Ella (Griswold) Sawler. She lived in Dartmouth for many years and was a member of Emmanuel Church where she served on the altar guild. She assumed the administrative duties of her husband's plumbing business. Upon retirement, she moved to Wellington, where she made many friends and was active in Wellington United Church. Her volunteer services included the Victoria General Hospital Auxiliary, the Auxiliary of Sir Frederick Fraser School, as well as canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Red Cross and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Surviving are her daughters, Lillian (Normand Houle), St. Alexandre d'Iberville and Black Point; Marian (Roger White), Yuma, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jerome, Julie and Guylaine Houle, and Anthony Gsegnet; five great-granchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Dillman; grandson, Christopher Gsegnet; son-in-law, Roy Gsegnet. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in presence of ashes will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Saturday, November 21, at 10 a.m., Rev. Gregory Heenan officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimers Society of Nova Scotia would be much appreciated.

BROWN, Malcolm Howe - 87, The Forties, Lunenburg Co., died Thursday, September 10, 1998, at home. Born in The Forties, he was a son of the late Adoniram and Ella (Hiltz) Brown. He was a lifelong member of the community. He was a barber and a mechanic most of his life. He was a member of The Forties United Baptist Church and a member of the Independent Order of Foresters. Surviving are sons, LeRoy and wife Betty; Kenneth and wife Joan, all of The Forties; daughter, Carol and husband Paul Collins, New Ross; grandchildren, Lorne, Robert, Sandra, John, Laurie Ann Zwicker, James, Terry, Cathy and Linda Hubley; great-grandchildren, Chase and Austen. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Frances Dorothy Messom; sons, Lorne and Laurie; brothers, Elmer, John, Austen, Percy, Clifford and one at birth; sisters, Mary, Lilla and Evelyn. Visitation in The Forties United Baptist Church today from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service. Funeral 2 p.m. today in The Forties United Baptist Church, Rev. Michael Lipe officiating. LUMSDEN, Ronald Blake
LUMSDEN, Ronald Blake - 14, 285 Granville St., New Glasgow, died September 10, 1998, in IWK Grace Health Centre, Halifax. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of David C. and Anne (Grant) Lumsden. He had been a resident of New Glasgow for all of his life. Blake's high spirit in life has led him to enjoy many aspects of sports, starting young with hockey then basketball and Kinsmen baseball. His true joy turned out to be judo obtaining a brown belt. Blake had qualified to attend the Canada Winter Games in Newfoundland in February 1999. He was a grade nine student at New Glasgow Junior High School. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow. He is survived by his parents, David and Anne (Grant) Lumsden; brother, Ryan David; sister, Mary Adele, both at home; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Grant, Thornburn; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Maude Lumsden, Dartmouth; aunts, Elaingle (David) Sponagle, Greenwood; Mary (Alex) Penner, Calgary; Carolyn Lumdsen Humble, Dartmouth; Olga Lumsden Berrigan (Frank), Sydney Road; uncles, Joseph (Debbie) Grant, Thorburn; Danny (Donna) Grant, Windsor, Ont.; Douglas (Judy) Lumsden, Barry (Emily) Lumsden, all of Canso; several cousins and many friends. He was employed at Snow White Laundry before his retirement. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish. FRASER, J. Douglas, P.Eng.
FRASER, J. Douglas, P.Eng. - Died peacefully on April 14, 1999, in Melville Lodge, Halifax. Born in 1902, in Halifax, he was a son of the late Hon. J. Fred Fraser and Carrie (Sulis) Fraser. After graduating with a B.Sc. from Dalhousie University in 1923, and a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from Mc-Gill University in 1925, he worked for the General Electric Co. in Lynn, Mass., for two years. In 1927, he married Marion Swan of Oxford, Cumberland Co., and they settled in Halifax, where he was resident engineer with Moirs Ltd. In his career as an engineer, Doug Fraser held position at Moirs Ltd.; Acadia Sugar Refinery Co. Ltd., Woodside, and served for three years with the Department of Munitions and Supply during the Second World War, were he managed repairs and refits to merchant ships and naval vessels. He rejoined Moirs Ltd. in 1945, serving as plant engineer, assistant general manager and technical advisor. Upon his retirement from Moirs in 1965, he served as executive secretary and registrar with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia until retirement in 1976. He was a life member of APENS, was appointed honorary life member as well, and was made APENS Registrar Emeritus, the only person to hold this distinction. He was a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and was awarded a Canadian Silver Jubilee Medal for his "worthy and devoted service" to the engineering profession in Nova Scotia. For many years he served the Province of Nova Scotia as chairman of the Board of Examiners under the Engine Operators Act, for the Department of Labour. In 1995 Doug Fraser was presented with the Prestigious F.H. Sexton Award and Medal, by his peers the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Halifax, where he was chairman of the building committee during the construction of the Christian Education Wing, and served on the Board of Management for many years. He was past master of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 1. He was presented with his 70-year jewel in 1997. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Halifax Curling Club and was a founding member of the Indian Point Recreation Centre in Glen Haven. For almost 50 years, he spent the summers at Glen Haven, where gardening was a favourite pastime. He is his sister, L. Jean Fraser, Halifax, and his daughters, Joan (Mrs. Warren Tregunno), Gretchen (Mrs. Donald Gillis), Halifax, and Elizabeth Ferguson, Newport Landing, Hants Co.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion (Swan); brothers, Cecil, Murray and Donald; sister, Freda Adams. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Oxford Street, Halifax, on Monday, April 19, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. The family gratefully declines flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, 1355 Barrington St., Halifax, NS B3J 1Y9, for the advancement of education and public awareness in the engineering profession.
FIANDER, Herbert William Gordon
FIANDER, Herbert William Gordon - 61, 830 Victoria Rd., Sydney, died April 14, 1999, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Samuel and Edith Winnifred (Burt) Fiander. He retired from the rail finishing mill at Sydney Steel Plant. He was an avid bowler. Surviving are his companion, Sandra Oakley; sister, Florence (Bailey) Rushmore, Ontario. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations to Canadian Diabetes Association or any charity.

RYAN, Thomas Junior - 60, Troy, formerly of Port Hawkesbury, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Port Hawkesbury, he was a son of the late Patrick and Jennie (Dorton) Ryan. He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Port Hawkesbury. He was a member of the KOC and a former employee of the Town of Port Hawkesbury. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Timmons; son, Thomas P.; daughters, Connie Ryan, Wanda (Mrs. Allan Burns), Diana (Mrs. John MacDougall) and Beverly (Mrs. Edward MacDougall), all of Port Hawkesbury; 11 grandchildren; sisters, Florence Timmons, Louise Ryan, Janet Burton, Frances Ryan, all of Port Hawkesbury; Verna Phillips, Margaree; Margaret McNamara, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, John Joseph; brothers, Joseph, Howard and Anthony. Visitation will be at W.J. Whitty Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. until time of funeral on Saturday. Funeral mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Cremation to follow.
