MacPHERSON, Arthur James
MacPHERSON, Arthur James - In his 80th year, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully October 7, 2007, at home. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Wilfred Wylie and Mary Jane (Burton) MacPherson. He had been employed as an accountant over the years with CIBC, Seaboard Finance, General Motors Head Office and finally, with the Nova Scotia Provincial Tax Commission from which he retired in 1991 after 14 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Church where he was a very devoted and well loved member of the choir. Music was always a major part of his life. Over his lifetime, Art was involved in several church choirs, quartets in Springhill and Oshawa, The County Town Singers and Choral Society in Oshawa, Barbershop in New Glasgow and the Stellarton Male Choir. His beautiful bass voice was well recognized in the area. He also served as treasurer for the N.G. Music Festival for 10 years. Known as a real gentleman, Dad could always be recognized by his beautiful white hair or his constant whistling. He could often be seen working in his garden on which he received many compliments. Seeing him wearing his suit in the garden was not an unusual sight. After his gardening, he would usually make his way to Tim Hortons on the East River Road where it is believed that he was one of the first and most valued and well-known customers. Everyone knew Art. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy (Pellow) MacPherson; son, Ian (Pat) MacPherson, (son and daughter Alan and Laurie); daughters, Heather (Kenneth) Watt, River John; Jane MacPherson, New Glasgow, (daughters Lindsay and Sarah) and their father Neal McCarney; sister-in-law, Florence MacPherson, Springhill; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ola, Joan Howard, Lulu (Wylie) Hyatt, Marjorie (Courtney) Gallagher; brothers, Wilfred, Ron (Lillian), Bill and Douglas. Cremation has taken place. Visitation from 1-2:15 p.m. Friday in Trinity United Church Sanctuary from where a memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook and Lori Crocker D.M. officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. His ashes will be taken to the family plot in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Donations may be made in loving memory to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or Trinity United Church, N.G. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
BOURGEOIS, Dora
BOURGEOIS, Dora - 69, Cheticamp, died peacefully after a long battle with cancer on October 8, 2007, in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Born in Cheticamp, she was a daughter of the late Joseph LeBlanc and Caroline (Doucet) LeBlanc. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp and also a member of the Senior Citizen Club and a member of Ladies of Ste. Anne Society. She will be remembered for her generous nature, her love of fishing, strawberry picking and her love of playing cards. She will be sadly missed by her beloved children and friends. Surviving are sons, Martin, Toronto; Marcel (Yvette), Cheticamp; Tommy, Montreal; daughter, Lisette (Terry) Bennett, Cheticamp; brother, Simon (Nettie) LeBlanc, Petit Etang; sisters, Claudette AuCoin and Mathilda Deveaux, both of Petit Etang; grandchildren, Marc, Mathieu, Andrée, Joshua, Sophie and Léo. She was predeceased by husband, Léo Bourgeois; son, Chester; brothers, Thomas LeBlanc and Chester LeBlanc. Visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday in St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp, Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. McNEIL, Joseph Harold
McNEIL, Joseph Harold - 83, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away Monday, October 8, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Joe resided in Haliburton Place for the last year of his life, prior to that he lived on the family farm on College Road, Windsor. With his surviving brother John, they operated the family farm all of Joe's working life. He was a well-known Guernsey cattle and purebred pig breeder. He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Kate McNeil. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 11, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. David Curry officiating. Interment will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor.

KENNEDY, Mary Irene - 82, Chipman, N.B., died October 2, 2007, in W.G. Bishop Nursing Home, Minto, N.B. She was a daughter of the late Berton and Irene Nickerson (of Yarmouth). She was predeceased by husband, John Kennedy; brothers, Frank and John Nickerson. Mary is survived by son, Robert (Elizabeth) Kennedy, Russell, Ont.; grandchildren, Ryan and Erin; sisters, Ellen Sweeney, Wolfville; Patricia Surette, Yarmouth; brother, Berton Nickerson, Wolfville. Funeral was held in Chipman Funeral Home Chapel on October 4. Father Peter Stephen officiated. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Chipman, N.B. Donations to any charity.
MILLER, Ruth Anthony
MILLER, Ruth Anthony - 102, Amherst, formerly of Lower Selma, passed away October 8, 2007, in Gable's Nursing Home, Amherst. Born in Lower Selma, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Selina (Murdock) Anthony. Ruth lived 95 years in the home where she was born. She was a member of the United Church of Canada and served as organist in Lower Selma for 35 years. She was an active community supporter. Ruth was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star, Cobequid No. 39 and Past Matron. She was an avid pianist and loved musical "get togethers" with family and friends. Her hobbies among many consisted of quilting, knitting and crocheting. Ruth was also a longtime fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. She is survived by daughters, Norma Cameron, Lois MacKeil, Carol Munro (Jim), Helen Brightman (Perry); sons, Donald (Hazel), Merrill, Gordon (Reta), David (Sandra), Walter (Laura); sister, Mary Feuichwanger; 31 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Phillip Marsden Miller; daughter, Rose Lloyd; brothers, Frank, Keith and Ellis. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. with an Order of Eastern Star Tribute Service at 7 p.m.; memorial service on Sunday at 2 p.m., all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, with Rev. QUIGLEY, Hadsel Gordon, MDCM
QUIGLEY, Hadsel Gordon, MDCM - Aged 94, Sandy Cove, Digby Co., passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 4, 2007, after a brief illness. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Gordon Nelson and Elsie Mae (Hutt) Quigley. Dr. Quigley descended from the "Foreign Protestants" who settled Lunenburg in 1753, and the New England Planters and United Empire Loyalists who settled in Annapolis-Digby in 1760 and 1783. He was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion, 1917. He grew up in Eastern Passage, and was selected to attend the Imperoyal School, later attending the Halifax Academy. He entered Dalhousie University graduating with a Diploma of Engineering in 1939. He then attended the Nova Scotia Technical College, where he earned degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He was a 1942 graduate of Dalhousie Medical School, and a member of the Sigma Chi and Phi Chi fraternities. Dr. Quigley was a General Practitioner in Halifax for 42 years and did post graduate studies in Neurosurgery at McGill in 1950. He was instrumental in the establishment of the in-patient Polio Clinic at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax during the epidemic of the early 1950s. He practiced Anesthesiology, Obstetrics, and Surgery and served on the staff of the Halifax Infirmary, the Children's Hospital and the Grace Maternity Hospital over the years. He also lectured at Dalhousie Medical School. He continued in General Practice and made house calls throughout Halifax County as a member of Family Practice Associates until his retirement in 1984. Dr. and Mrs. Quigley then moved from Halifax to their summer home, Quigley's Corner, in Sandy Cove, Digby Co. Dr. Quigley had little time for leisure pursuits, but loved his sailboat 'Brigadoon' which he sailed out of Bedford Basin Yacht Club. He was a proficient photographer, developing and printing his own photos, a master gardener, a happy baker of cream puffs, a voracious reader, and was delighted to share with all his extensive knowledge on a host of subjects. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lila Gwendolyn (Morehouse) Quigley; son, Richard (Noelle), Adelaide, Australia; daughters, Carol (Anthony) Measham, Chevy Chase, Md.; Karen (Peter) Smith, Kentville; Gwendolyn (Gary) Wilson, Halifax. He is also survived by grandchildren, Michael Quigley, and Gillian Quigley, Adelaide, Australia; Mark (Alisa) Measham, Halifax; Diana Measham (Ben Stocking), Hanoi, Vietnam; Toby Measham (Pardo Pannunzio), Montreal; Jeremy (Felicity) Measham, Charlottetown; Claire Smith, Halifax; Benjamin Smith, Kanazawa, Japan; Caroline Wilson, Rachael Wilson, and Jonathan Wilson, all of Halifax; and great-grandchildren, Sam and Lila Stocking, Matteo Pannunzio, and Henry Hadsel Measham. Cremation and a private family memorial have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
EDWARDS, Randy Graham
EDWARDS, Randy Graham - Passed away peacefully at his home in Cobourg, Ont., on October 8, 2007, at the age of 52 years. Randy is survived by his loving wife, Heather (Mackenzie) Edwards; stepchildren, Holly and Darren Mackenzie; birth daughter, Stephannie (Greg) Luddington and grandson Ryan. He will be sadly missed by brother, James Edwards, and sisters, Debbie (Dean) Greenough, Susan (Tony Kaytor) Goalen. He was lovingly adored by his nephews, Nick (Jen Davidson) Greenough, Trevor (Ashley) Greenough, Anthony and Michael Edwards and Eddie and Jeff Goalen. Randy deeply loved his K-9 friends Peco and Doxi who deeply miss him. Randy was loved by many and will be missed by even more. MATERGIO, Robert D. - Truro, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2007, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in 1942, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary Jane (White) Matergio. Bob was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Bob worked in the public school system for 35 years, many of which were spent in regular and special education. In 1995 the opportunity arose to work for the provincial government until his retirement in March 2007. In this work, Bob developed a large rewarding network of professional and personal relationships across the province. Surviving are his always supportive wife, Judy; son, Andrew and daughter-in-law, Sara Cohen of Banff, Alta. He was predeceased by his only sibling Wayne in 1966. A private family ceremony will take place at a later date with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

CARVER, Audrey Irene - 85, New Germany, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Monday, October 8, 2007, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in New Germany, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Claudia (Emino) Langille. She was a member of St. John in the Wilderness Anglican Church, New Germany, where she was a member of the former ladies guild. Surviving are her brother, Leigh (Delia) Langille, New Germany; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Maynard William Carver; brother, Murray Langille. MacKENZIE, Jessie R. - 80, of Smith Avenue, Parrsboro and formerly of Ward's Brook passed away peacefully Monday, October 8, 2007, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Port Greville, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Emily (Corbin) McCully. She was a graduate from the School of Nursing in Amherst. Following her graduation, she nursed in Amherst, Kentville, Pictou, Parrsboro and Advocate Harbour retiring in 1992. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by daughters, Margo Gilbert (Clifford), New Canaan; Janie Pettigrew (Angus), Parrsboro; sister, Madeleine McNeil, Dartmouth; brother, Gerald, Parrsboro; grandchildren, Paul, Joey, Jeremy and Patricia Gilbert; Laura Pettigrew; several nieces and nephews. EDWARDS, Charles Joseph
EDWARDS, Charles Joseph - 1931-2007. In loving memory of Charles Joseph Edwards, age 76 of West Chezzetcook, who passed away very peacefully with family at his side on Thanksgiving Day, October 8, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Charlie was the son of the late James and Annie (MacDougall) Edwards. Charlie worked very hard with pride for O'Connor's Cleaners, and then enjoyed many years with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union as a superintendent before retiring. With loving hands and heart he raised a family of four children with his soul mate, the late Helena Alice LaPierre. Charlie was a Catholic and a member of St. Anselm's Parish, West Chezzetcook. He was a wonderful musician, playing harmonica and guitar. His dedicated hobby of racing homing pigeons gave him many hours of joy and happiness. As a forgiving, honest, soft-hearted father who was always willing to share a laugh, he will be missed dearly. He is survived by his daughters, Angela McGrath (Kevin) of Hammonds Plains; Wanda Milne (William) of Head Chezzetcook; Maria Murphy (Timothy) of West Chezzetcook and son, Charles Edwards (Heather) of New Brunswick; his beautiful grandchildren, Alicia, Dylan, Carson and Tyler; brothers, John Edwards, Ontario; Alex Edwards and sisters, Janie Robinson, Alexis Rhodenizer, Rachael Taylor and Annie Mae Snow, all of Cape Breton. He was predeceased by sisters, Josie Willett and Margie Covey and brother, Jimmy Edwards. CAMPBELL, Margaret Evelyn "Maggie" - 66, of Oakfield, passed away on October 7, 2007 in Halifax Infirmary, QEII, with her family by her side. Born in Waverley she was a daughter of the late George and Bertha (Wren) Quigley. Maggie worked at Oakfield Golf and Country Club, Inn on the Lake and then retired from Airport Hotel as a position of cook, after twenty years of service. She enjoyed playing bingo with her bingo buddies, making Christmas ornaments for her grandchildren, dancing and going to the yard sales. Surviving are her husband of 47 years John "Jack", daughters; Jackie (Mark Stubbington) Burnes, Mt. Uniacke; Peggy (Leo) Jarvis, Oakfield; Terry-Lee, Oakfield; sons, John, Oakfield; Peter (Barb), Enfield; grandchildren, Cody and Sydney Jarvis, Tyler and Geoffrey Burnes and Kelsey Purdy; brothers, Gordon and Burton; sisters, Florence, Helen, Shirley and Carolyn. Predeceased by brothers David and Walter, and sister Elsie. Cremation has taken place.
