WEST (MacLean), Grace Oram
It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Grace West of Truro on November 29, 2008. Grace was born in Hopewell, Pictou Co. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dewolfe MacLean. For many years, she was a member of St. Columbus United Church, Hopewell, where she served as their organist. Throughout her early life, she worked in retail at Margolians and Bentleys in Truro, where she enjoyed fashion and modeling. She met the love of her life, Earl, in Truro, whom she married before his departure overseas to serve his country in the Second World War. Upon his return, they enjoyed a wonderful life together in different parts of Nova Scotia. Grace will be remembered for her quick wit, sense of fashion, love of animals, music, and devotion to her late husband, Earl. In her later years, she received great comfort from her neighbours in Truro who treated her with love and kindness. She especially loved her close friend and trusted, travelling companion, Margie Flemming. Grace was the last surviving member of her family. She leaves to mourn her loss her only daughter, Eleanor Grace MacConnell; companion, Garth Benjamin; her grandson, Stacey MacConnell; wife, Shelly Vye MacConnell; beautiful great-granddaughter, Madalyn Leigh MacConnell, Barrie, Ont., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl; brother, Donald (Pepsi) MacLean; sisters, Elda Sawler, Barbara Springer, and Nita Florence MacDonald. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. Interment will take place at a later date in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. KEELING, Bennett R.B.
77, of Whycocomagh, died Saturday, November 29, 2008, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born in Lewis Mountain, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late George and Alice (Wareham) Keeling. In his earlier years, Bennett was a self-employed trucker hauling pulp for many years. He worked for W.D. MacAulay Trucking. He was a past road foreman for the Department of Transportation in Whycocomagh. He retired from the Whycocomagh Arena. He was a former member of Whycocomagh Volunteer Fire Department. One of the things Bennett really enjoyed was watching golf. He was an adherent of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh. He is survived by his loving wife, Florence (Fee); daughter, Benita, Halifax; sons, Rick (Corinne), Slave Lake, Alta.; Michael (Jesslyn), Skye Glen; Mark (Tanya), Mulgrave; sisters, Margaret MacPherson, Aberdeen; Pearl Campbell, Blue's Mills; Edith (Doug) MacDougall, Sydney; Lillian Morse, Braintree, Mass.; brothers, Edward (Beverley), Baddeck; Jimmy (Lenora), London, Ont.; grandchildren, Donald, John, Amanda, Clayton, Jordan, Riley and Sandy; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Agnes, Annie, Alice and Christina; brother, George; nephews, Ross Keeling, George Pettipas, Tony MacDonald and niece, Bertha Morse. 95, St. Joseph Du Moine, died November 30, 2008, in Foyer Pere Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp. Born in St. Joseph Du Moine on November 18, 1913, he was a son of the late Daniel Chiasson and Elise (Poirier) Chiasson. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, St. Joseph Du Moine. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Eleonore Chiasson; children, Ferdinand (Audrey) Chiasson, Vancouver, B.C.; Annette (Teddy) Aucoin, St. Joseph Du Moine; Lucille (William) LeBlanc, Margaree Forks; Alfred Chiasson, St. Joseph Du Moine; Yvette LeBlanc, Belle C™te; Monique (Michel) Tremblay, St. Joseph Du Moine; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; half-brother, Joseph (Yvonne) Chiasson, Maynard, Mass.; sister, Roseanne, New Waterford; half-sister, Josephine Taylor, Welland, Ont. He was predeceased by brothers, Alex, Leo, Arthur, Johnny; half-brother, Samuel; sisters, Lucie, Elizabeth; half-sister, Marie Jeanne. Cremation has taken place. No visitation. 68, died November 30, 2008, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Center. Born in Lower Maccan, he was a son of the late Fidel and Elsie Gogan. Surviving are wife, Judy (Capson); children, Arlene Poplar, Edward, Karen VanSnick, Wanda Gogan; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, David; sisters, Shirley White, Iona Dwyer. He was predeceased by brothers, John, Amos; sisters, Mary Noiles, Carol Rhindress, Sheila Chapman. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in River Hebert and Joggins Community Funeral Home, River Hebert. PATTERSON, Leslie Weldon "Les"
86, Summerville, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Tennecape, he was a son of the late Robbie and Minnie (Lingard) Patterson. He is survived by his sons, Blair (Marilyn), Walton; Laurie (Judy), Summerville; daughters, Dorothy (Wayne), Kentville; Deborah (Russell), Tennecape and Denise (Stephen), Kempt Shore; grandchildren, Rose, Amy, Wayne, Leslie, Pam, Jeff, Brian and Barry; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Melissa, Brad, Evan, Rebecca, Abigail and Adrienne; his brother, Ellis (Frances), Tennecape; many nieces and nephews. Les was predeceased by his wife, Hazel (McLellan); brothers, John, Eugene, Max, Lloyd, Clifford and Carleton and sisters, Etta Jean and Alma, both in infancy; Freda Hatfield and Mae Cox. Les worked in the woods as a lumberman when he volunteered to serve his country. He enlisted in the army in February, 1943 and served until October, 1945. He was a veteran of the Second World War-First Battalion S D & G Highlanders. He landed on Juno Beach June 6, 1944 "D Day". He was a Corporal when discharged from the army. Better known as "Pat" or "Patty" to his regiment and friends, he served in Belguim, Holland, France and Germany. He received the American Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with Military operation as Section Leader of D Company on June 17, 1944 and April 12, 1945. He was a Bren gunner during the war. After being discharged he went to work for Dresser Minerals. He was an avid gardener. Les was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 166 Noel, and enjoyed going to war reunions every year and the numerous trips overseas with his comrades and friends. He lived a long life enriched by his loving family. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a legion service being held at 6:45 p.m. in J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Summerville. Funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Tennecape United Church, Rev. Russell Newhook officiating with private family burial in Tennecape Cemetery. 73, Halifax, passed away peacefully at QEII Health Sciences Centre on Monday, December 1, 2008, surrounded by his family. Born in Africville, he was the son of the late Amos and Marjorie (Cassidy) Emerson and the late George Marsman. McNeil, Sister Teresina
The former Sister Hugh Teresina, 84, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died in Bethany, the motherhouse, on Monday, December 1, 2008, in the 66th year of her religious life. Born in Hillcrest, Alta., and baptized Anna Elizabeth, she was the daughter of Philip Roderick and Christina (MacDonald) McNeil. Sister Teresina entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1941, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1943, and her final vows on August 15, 1946. In 1947 she graduated and received her R.N. from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Glace Bay. She held various positions within the field of health care during her religious life: as Nurse, Nursing Service Director, Nursing School Director and Instructor, and as coordinator of hospital volunteers. Sister received her B. A. from St. Francis Xavier University, her Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Boston University, and a certificate in Administration of Nursing Service from the University of Toronto. While studying in Boston, Mass., Sister did volunteer work on a health care van ministering to people addicted to drugs. During her ministry in Nova Scotia she served at St. Joseph's in Glace Bay, St. Rita Hospital in Sydney, Martha Home Health and Bethany in Antigonish. In Alberta, she served at St. Michael's Hospital in Lethbridge, and in Lowell, Mass., at St. John's Hospital. After her retirement from health care services, Sister Teresina did volunteer work in ministry with First Nations people in both Lethbridge, Alta., and Afton. Sister served two terms as local leader in communities where she lived. Sister Teresina was the oldest of seven children. She is survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth MacDonald, and brothers, Alexander, Joseph and Philip. She was predeceased by brothers, Hugh Philip and Morden Pius. The remains will be resting in Bethany, beginning on Thursday, December 4 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place on Friday, December 5, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish.

92, St. Andrew's, Antigonish Co., passed away peacefully, Monday, December 1, 2008, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. Born in Glen Roy, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Flora (MacPherson) MacDonnell. Sadie was a member of St. Andrew's Parish and CWL, and an avid supporter of the St. Andrew's Flyers. She was devoted to her family and was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are sons, Dennis (Ellen), Donnie Wayne (Barb), Antigonish; A.J. (Rosie), Beau (Beverly), Hugh (Lynn), and A.D. (Darlene), St. Andrew's; daughters, Anne Marie (late Joe), Antigonish; Danna (Terry) Taylor, Lochaber; Florence (Gerard) MacEachern, Lanark; brothers, John A., St. Andrew's; Donald (Anita), Dundas, Ont.; sisters, Theresa (Nick) Landry, Lower South River; Mary (late Dougall) Gillis, Pinevale; Joan (late Bernard) Chisholm, Lanark; sister-in-law, Catherine MacDonnell, St. Andrew's; brother-in-law, Hughie Duncan MacDonald, Sherbrooke; 26 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Angus Dan; brothers, Alex, Allan and sister, Kay (late Charlie) Landry. DesROCHES, Gilbert Benjamin "Gil"
72, Truro, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008, surrounded by loving members of his family in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Summerside, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Joseph and Isabelle (Arsenault) DesRoches. Gil enjoyed working with horses and was employed with Mr. George Callbeck in Summerside in the 1950's. He worked for Irving Oil and Schurman Windows in Summerside, for a number of years. Gil was employed with Kohler Windows and Doors, Debert, until his retirement. He enjoyed bowling on the Truro Seniors Bowling League and was a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Surviving are his wife, Janet (MacInnis), of 51 years; daughter, Ann (Darrell) Clyke, Truro; sons, Alan (Arlene), Hampton, N.B.; Andy (Rebecca), Nairobi, Kenya, Africa; grandchildren, Jason DesRoches and Caleb Clyke; Emily, Olivia and Jonathan DesRoches; Samuel and Davita DesRoches; several nieces and nephews. Gil was predeceased by son, Daniel Edward DesRoches; sister, Eliza and brother, Ronald; Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, in Immanuel Baptist Church, 295 Young St., Truro, Rev. Kaj Binderup officiating. Passed way peacefully in VG Site, QEII on Sunday, November 30, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 9, 1928 in Halifax, to the late Thomas and Ida (Johnson) Spearns. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Allen, Halifax; Suzanne (Rick) Gannon, Herring Cove; Annette (Rick) Keseluk, Fall River; her sons, James (Carol), Herring Cove; Blair (Maria), Bear Cove; Robert (Lisa) White Rock, B.C.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; sisters, Theresa Spearns, Herring Cove; Genevieve Power, Halifax, and Bertha (Paul) Grandy, London, Ont.; brother, Robert, Halifax. Reta was predeceased by her much loved husband and best friend, Howard; son, Tommy; grandson, Tommy Gannon; brother, John Spearns and sister Mary Sullivan. She was a long-time, devoted parishioner of St. Paul's Church, Herring Cove. She will be lovingly remembered as a selfless mother, always a lady, and for her great sense of fun and humor. She will be buried beside her husband in St. Paul's Cemetery, Herring Cove. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 3 at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's church, Herring Cove with Father Jerry Gauvreau officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. TEE, Kim Tai
Our dad passed away peacefully on Saturday November 29, 2008, in Abbey J. Lane Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax, at the age of 62. Our dad was born in the town of Muar, Malaysia to a family that included his 10 brothers and sisters. In 1969 he moved to Halifax to complete a Ph.D. in physics at Dalhousie University, and in 1971 he joined the Bedford Institute of Oceanography as a physicist-oceanographer. Much of his research centered on the study of tidal currents for which he even has a current named after him, and his love for water extended to his appreciation of the calmness and serenity of the ocean. Our dad was known for his love of tennis and badminton. You could always find him playing doubles at the Colby Tennis Club every Sunday morning. He also played badminton every Friday night at "Chinese Gym". He was a big fan of Star Trek and we would often find him hunkered down in front of the tube with his favourite bag of Doritos. Our dad has held strong through the many physical and emotional challenges that he has faced over the last 13 years of his illness. During this time, he drew strength from his passion for Buddhist philosophy. Our dad is survived by his wife and our mom, Rev. Jenru, as well as his sons, James and Frank. His love and devotion to our family was unparalleled and something we will never forget. The funeral service and viewing will begin on Thursday, December 4 at 1 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. For those who are unable to attend the service, a visitation period will be available that same morning from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the funeral home.
