STRICKLAND, Albert Whitman "Whit"
Halifax, passd away January 9, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in New Glasgow, he was the son of the late Albert and Florence (MacLean) Strickland. He was retired from the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission as Director of Labour Relations and Personnel. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in Canada and overseas. He was a member of the Philae Temple Shriners, 32nd Scottish Rite, Burns Lodge No. 10 AF & AM, and Vimy Branch No. 27. He is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine (Thompson); sister, Sylvia MacDonald, St. John, N.B.; sons, Leslie (Nancy), Abercrombie; Whitman and Robin; stepson, Joseph (Angela) O'Neil, Calgary, Alta.; daughters, Kathleen and April; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sister, Dolina Swan, Toronto, Ont., and brother, Dr. Samuel Clyde Strickland, Philadelphia, USA. As requested, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15, at 11 a.m. in Philae Temple Shrine, 3530 Connolly St., Halifax. Reception following. Graveside service at a later date. FORTUNE, Evelyn Beatrice
90, Centennial Villa, Amherst, and formerly of Springhill, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009, in CRHCC, Nappan. Born in Pugwash, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Mary (Seaman) Dingle, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was an adherent to St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Springhill. She is survived by nieces, Evelyn, Beverly, Heather, Jo Anne and Carolyn; nephews, Wayne D., Wayne A., and Billy and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Fortune Jr.; brother, Frank; sisters, Mildred, Doris, Betty, Jean, Dorothy and infant sister, Elsie; niece, Shirley; nephew, Frank. Visitation will be held 1-3 p.m. today followed immediately at 3 p.m. by the funeral service with Rev. David Lloyd-Pearce officiating, both held in A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, at a later date. If so desired, donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
MACKEAN, Isabel Dorothy "Belle"
93, of Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, and formerly of Caribou River, Pictou Co., passed away January 9, 2009, in the home. Born in Pictou, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Mary (Cameron) Pope. She was a homemaker, an excellent cook, and she enjoyed spending time with grandchildren who stopped by after school every day on their way home when growing up. She is survived by son, James MacKean (Sherry), British Columbia; grandchildren, Robert MacKean III (Kathleen English), Caribou River; Scott MacKean (Tammy), Holland Landing, Ont.; Audrey MacKean, British Columbia. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert MacKean Sr.; son, Robert MacKean Jr.; daughter, Janet MacKean; sister, Jean Decoste. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, with Rev. CUMMINGS, Dorothy Viola
Passed away peacefully on January 14, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, on April 2nd, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Florence (Carter) Brushett. In her teens, Dorothy worked at Veo's Restaurant and Store in Glace Bay and, upon finishing school, worked at the unemployment office. She moved to Halifax in 1956, where she obtained a stenographer's course and worked at the Dominion Store. She also worked in real estate, for the Rubber Company, at City Hall and at Pier 21 during the Hungarian Revolution. It was in Halifax in 1956 that Dorothy met Sam. They were married on October 16, 1957, moving to Corner Brook, N.L., where Dorothy worked at the unemployment office. In 1960, they moved to Shelburne and in 1970 to Yarmouth where, in addition to raising her family, she was co-owner of CAC Home Care. Dorothy was member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church and the Bluenose Twirlers. In her younger years, she and Sam led a very active life, often socializing and having a house full of people. She also enjoyed vacations with her family and traveling. Dorothy was a proud Cape Bretoner, always happy to travel back home for vacations and to keep her ties to her family and Cape Breton vibrant. She took every opportunity to listen to music, read books, the newspaper and to cherish anything and everything from home. In Yarmouth, she made her home her castle and loved to putter around, watch the birds and enjoy the flowers and vegetable gardens. She and Sam took long walks almost daily and square danced for many years. Dorothy was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother. She built her life around her family and made their care and well-being her most important priority. In this she never failed or faltered. She adored her children and was always actively involved in and supportive of whatever path they chose to follow. Grammie Dot also loved her grandchildren, displayed many pictures of them proudly throughout her home and looked forward to attending every activity, event, performance or happening they might be involved in, no matter how seemingly ordinary. She had a ready smile for all at all times. Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Sam; daughter, Heather (Hubert Devine); sons, Shawn (Shelley), Kevin (Carla), Wayne (Amanda) and grandchildren, Dustin, Stephanie, Wayne Jr., Emma, William and Violet, and brothers, George, Donald and sister, Irene. She was predeceased by brother, Alexander; sister, Lillian and granddaughter in infancy, Adrienne Leigh. Visitation will take place today, from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Funeral service Saturday, January 17, at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Spring burial in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. WALDRON, Dr. Donald E. Jr.
Died peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, after a six month illness with pancreatic cancer in the Hospital of St. Raphael, New Haven, Conn. Don was born in1948 in Saint John, N.B., the son of Donald Edgar Waldron and Helen Grace (Mawhinney) Waldron and was a baptized member of the former Victoria Street Baptist Church. Don graduated from Saint John High School in 1966, from the University of New Brunswick with a BSc (1970) and MSc (1973), and later earned a PhD in Biology from Dalhousie University. As a Marine Biologist, Don was employed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Newfoundland from 1973 to 1977 and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography from 1977 to 1993. Thereafter, he turned his talents to biostatistical work in the Life Sciences for various pharmaceutical companies and, more recently, with such prestigious universities as Rockefeller and Yale. His professional contributions have made a lasting impression on cancer and HIV/AIDS research. Don had a passion for life and lived every day with an optimism and joy that touched the hearts of all those around him. He was incredibly proud of his family and, in addition to his parents, Don is survived by his wife, Alpana (Gupta) Waldron; sons, Christopher, John, Adam, and Ethan; daughter, Anne; brother, Arthur Waldron; sister, Margo (Waldron) Hall; and his former wife, Jane (MacDougall) Waldron. He was predeceased by an infant son, Christopher Michael. Don will be sadly missed by all those who loved him so much. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B., (506) 634-7424, with visiting on Saturday, January 10, from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 11, in Brenan's Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Maces Bay Cemetery at a later date. NAUGLER, John Lawerence
86, of Hebb's Cross, Lunenburg Co., passed away January 6, 2008 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Camperdown, he was a son of the late Fred and Jennie (Stewart) Naugler. John went to work at the age of fourteen. He worked at farming, logging, the railway, and for most of his life, at carpenter work. He loved gardening and hunting. He will be missed by family and friends. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Bridgewater, and served as Head Deacon for many years. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Stewart; sons, Richard (Corvelle); Ronald (Linda); sister, Barbara Eisener; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Murry, Melvin, Henry, Elihu, and Uriah; sister, Kathleen. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday, funeral service 1 p.m. Sunday, both in R. A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. WILLIAMS, Colton Douglas
3 months, passed away suddenly at home on January 7, 2009, surrounded by his parents, Doug and Kim (George) Williams, and his critters. Colton was born on October 9, 2008 in the IWK Health Centre, Halifax. He spent most of his short life in the IWK Health Centre Neo-Natal ICU where our special boy touched the hearts of all including the many doctors, nurses, and visitors who met him. He is survived by his parents, Doug and Kim Williams; maternal grandparents, Shirley George and Jeffery Wilson; paternal grandparents, Douglas Frederick and Myrtle Julia (Morrell) Williams; great-grandfather, Roy Morrell; aunts and uncles, Florence and Robbin Gilroy, Angela and John Alick, Ken George, Diane Wilson, Gordon Wilson; many loving cousins, great-aunts and uncles and extended family. He will be sadly missed by all family and many special friends. He was predeceased by great-grandmothers, Lillian George, Vera Gullage, Florence Morrell, and Eileen Taylor; great-grandfathers, Douglas Henry Williams, William Gullage; great-aunts, Patricia Snyder, Ruth Panzor; cousins, Francis Snyder and Nancy Collins. WILSON, M. Joyce
78, Bridgewater, passed away in Shoreham Village on January 8, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Farish and Edna Lewis of Lockeport. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Mrs. John Muise), Bridgewater; and son, Jamie (Evelyn), Coldbrook; sisters, Bessie (Mrs. Laughlin MacKay), Lockeport, and Myra (Mrs. Frank Mattatall), Windsor, Ont.; three grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a nephew and niece. In keeping with her wishes there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place. 78, Clark's Harbour, Shelburne Co., passed away January 7, 2009, in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Born at Shag Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Jerimiah and Gertrude (Nickerson) Watkins. She attended West Head Wesleyan Church. She is survived by her husband, Clyde; daughters, Wanda, Clark's Harbour; Patricia (Douglas), Swim's Point; sister, Melba Doane, Barrington. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Watkins; sisters, Margaret Greenwood, Oneita Lyons, Thelma Cleveland, Kathleen Shand. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m., Friday at the H. SPEARS, Effie Priscella
95, Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax, and formerly of Whitehead, Guysborough Co., died Saturday, January 10, 2009, in the home. Born on Raspberry Island, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Snyder) Casey. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Effie was very active in the church and loved to quilt, play bingo and cards. Her home was filled with the wonderful smells of her baking and cooking and everyone was always welcomed into her kitchen for a home-cooked meal and a cup of tea, or a cookie still warm from the oven for many of the local children. Her warmhearted and compassionate nature will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all. She is survived by son, Howard (Shirley) MacKenzie, Halifax; grandchildren, Debbie (Jimmy) Rockola; Howie Jr. (Patty), Charlie (Corina), Ernie (Ruth); six great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by first husband, Ernest MacKenzie; second husband, Henry Spears; brothers, Dan, Dennis, Howard, Ernest; sisters, Anne, Blanche, Mary "Mamie". Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Port Felix.
