Died Saturday, January 17, 2009. She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Burke) Hutchison. Surviving are daughters, Carmel, Mary, Kaye, Beverly, Anita, Cecilia; sons, Frank, Michael; daughter-in-law, Nancy; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by husband, Archie; daughter, Shirley; son, Leo; sister, Christina; brother, Leo and one great-grandchild, Catherine, in infancy. Visitation today 3-5, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home. Funeral Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael's Church Cremation will follow. Interment will take place at a later date.
WHYNOT, Mildred M.
89, Queens Manor, Liverpool, passed away peacefully January 19, 2009, in Queens Manor. Born in Port Medway, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Viola (Tufts) Dolliver. Mildred was a life member of Ladies Auxiliary; Mersey Branch No. 38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. She loved to play bingo, darts and bowling. She enjoyed sport fishing and knitting. She is survived by her daughters, Pat (Roland) Smith, New Germany; Doris (George) Levy and Brenda (Lawrence) Boutilier, both of Mersey Point; sons, Mitchell (Karen), Liverpool; Ralph Jr. (Carmen), Dowling, Ont.; Randy (Debra), Mersey Point; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph and her sister, Kay Tarr. Visitation will be Thursday, January 22, from 7-9 p.m. and funeral service will be Friday, January 23, at 2 p.m., both in Chandlers' Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Rev. Judy Cross officiating. COMEAU, Kevin Joseph
44, formerly of Saulnierville Station, passed away January 15, 2009, in Magnolia Beach, Tex. He loved his work as a heavy machine operator and will be greatly missed for his witty ways and practical jokes. He was always there for others in need. Surviving are son, Lloyd; daughter, Lynn; wife, Barbara; stepchildren, Travis, Rebecca, Britany; parents, Alphie and Doloris; sister, Darlene; niece, Joelene; nephew, Jean-Jacques. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday, January 21, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville, Rev. Albeni d'Entremont. His remains will be scattered at sea in Texas where he loved to spend his time at the beach fishing. Family flowers only. Donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
OICKLE, Viola Barbara
71, of Liverpool, Queens Co., passed away January 17, 2009, in the Queens Manor, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Pearle (Roy) Whynot. Viola was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked many places in Liverpool during her lifetime, such as the Old Stedman's Store, Mersey Seafood's, and the New System Laundry. But she was probably best known as a sales representative for Avon for many years. She enjoyed decorating cakes, camping, and in her later years, playing bingo. She is survived by her son, Vernon (Nancy), of Liverpool; grandchildren Tiffany, Nathan, Kellen, Colby; great-granddaughter, Olivia; brother, Lincoln (Marie), of Buckfield. She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd; daughter, Heather; son, Todd; brother, Merrill. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2009, from 7-9 p.m., in Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. WENTZELL, Jessie Irene
74, Charlottetown, P.E.I., passed away peacefully in the Queen Elizabeth Health Hospital, on Saturday, January 17, 2009. She was the dear mother of Bruce Wentzell (Suzanne), Heather Wentzell, and William Stevenson. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Eugenia, Devin, Derek, Alex, Carissa Frenette, Brina Frenette, Courtney, and Jakob. She was a sister of Edward Rafuse, Marguerite Wendell, Pauline Singer, and Vivian Pyke. Predeceased by her husband, Bruce Wentzell Sr.; and by her brothers and sisters, Charlie Rafuse, Gerald Rafuse, Carl Rafuse, Clyde Rafuse, Dorothy Tucker, and Marjorie Blakney. Jessie spent many years volunteering for the Kidney Foundation. Resting in Belvedere Funeral Home. No visitation by personal request. A memorial service will be held in First Baptist Church, Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment later in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. Flowers gratefully declined. 91, of Antigonish passed away on January 18, 2009, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Hillegom, Holland, he was a son of the late Johan and Margaretha (De Jong) van de Reep. Fred was an executive chef in Amsterdam, in The Hague, and on cruise liners before coming to Canada. He was a veteran of the Dutch Merchant Marines having served during the Second World War. After coming to Canada, he was head of food services at Sydney City Hospital from 1953 to 1965. He then became head of food services at St. F.X. University until his retirement. He was a member of Arras Branch 59, Royal Canadian Legion, Antigonish. Fred was an artist in both his work and leisure time. He enjoyed oil painting and sketching. He was a constant learner all of his life and taught many courses in the adult education programs in Antigonish. He is survived by daughters, Janet (Martien) Bekkers, Antigonish; Sarah (Edward) Chisholm, North Grant; sons, John (Theresa), West River; Fred (Marsha), Fort McMurray, Alta.; Tom (Ann), Calgary, Alta.; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Malcolm MacNeil, Victoria, B.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Calder; daughter, Margo MacNeil; grandson, Michael Patrick Chisholm; brothers, Theo, Cor, Hans; sisters, Ria and Ineke. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Ninian's Cathedral, with Rev. Andrew Gillies presiding, on Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Antigonish Right to Life or the Antigonsih Food Bank.
NICHOLSON, George Winston
62, of Dartmouth, passed away January 21, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Jean (Hirschfeld) Nicholson. He worked for Guildford in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for over 25 years. He then moved on to Scotia Insulations until his illness. George is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Donna (Salmon); daughters, Janis (Matthew Feltham) Nicholson, Stratford, Ont.; Laura (Jeff Brewer) Nicholson, Quispamsis, N.B.; sisters, Shirley (Fred) Turner, Aileen (Claude) Millett; foster brother, Robert (Sheila) Jollimore, all of Dartmouth; grandchildren, Luke and Noah Feltham, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Malcolm. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, January 23, in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. BENT, Mary Elizabeth
77, of South Williamston, passed away Friday, December 19, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Viola (Grant) Bonang. Mary was a very active member of the community. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League, Middleton Choral Society, where she was part of the cast in four musical productions and the Nictaux Ladies Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed camping, "The Cabin" in Phinney's Cove and "The Cottage" at East Lake. Mary is survived by daughters, Sandra (Gary White) Durling, Nictaux; Mary (Leonard) Watkins, South Williamston; Mora (Brian) Grant, Nictaux; sister, Joyce (Fred) Duncanson, South Ohio, Yarmouth Co.; brothers, Daniel (Faye) Bonang, Newport Corner; Lawrence, Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Veronica, Angel, Lisa, Stacy, April, Melissa, Cody; 12 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday, December 21, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. THERIAULT, John Gilbert "Jack", Sgt. Ret'd
75, Bridgewater, passed away January 16, 2009 in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Frank and Olive (Boylan) Theriault. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces. After retirement, he was employed with MacKenzie's Bus Line as a bus driver. After that he was employed with Ben's Bakery. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (MacDonell); son, Roy (Dayana); daughters, Jean and Mary; granddaughter, Jessica; sisters, Frances Doucette, Celeste Meehan, Mary MacDonnell; brother, Frank (Ann). He was predeceased by a brother, Gerald. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Bridgewater, with Father Theriault officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cemetery at a later date. No flowers or visitation by request. DEMINGS, Enos Oscar
85, Carleton Village, Shelburne Co., passed away at home January 16, 2009. Born January 29, 1923, in Carleton Village, he was the youngest son of the late James and Elizabeth (Payne) Demings. Enos is the last surviving member of his family. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Princess Louise Fusiliers, Merchant Navy and 86 Bridge Co., RCASC. He was a fisherman for several years and then worked for Shelburne Contracting, later as a superintendent with Trask & Shaw. He then bought them out, forming his own company, Tri-County Construction, which he owned and operated until his retirement. He was a member and Trustee of St. Paul's United Church, Albert Lodge No. 30, Past Master of Philadelphia Lodge No. 47, Rossignal Chapter No. 6, Royal Arch Mason, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites, Antiquity Preceptory, Philae Temple, past president of South Shore Shrine Club, selected Masters, and Life member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 63. He was a founding member of the Churchover Gunning Cove Fire Department. Being orphaned as a young boy, he had to make his own way into the world, going to the Valley to pick apples at age 14. He worked there until he joined the Armed Forces in 1940. Enos was a kind and generous man, helping out family, friends and strangers. He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle (Goulden, Gribble); stepdaughter, Beatrice (Dennis) Smith, Shag Harbour, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Fraser, Stanley and Nathan; sisters, Grace, Evelyn, Edna and Elizabeth. Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne; Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. and Eastern Star Service 6:45 p.m. today with a Legion Service Monday at 6:45 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Cindy Dunnett officiating. Interment in Carleton Village Cemetery.
