MORELL, Mary "Madeleine"
71, Pomquet. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, on February 7, 2009, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Pomquet, Madeleine was a daughter of the late John and Emma Doiron. Madeleine attended Teachers College in Truro and taught school in the community of Pomquet until she began raising her family. Once her children were grown she went on to graduate in 1996 from College de l`Acadie, receiving her Early Childhood Education Certificate. Madeleine was an active member of her parish community, volunteering for many years with the parish religion program, the Pomquet Ladies Club, Pomquet Development Society, the Pomquet Museum and Les Club des Petits. She was a talented seamstress and quilter having created many beautiful projects. Surviving are her daughters, Rose (Jimmy) Feltmate, Josephine (Philip) Landry, Thelma (Glenn) Snyder, all of Pomquet, Lucy (Kevin) Boyle, St. Andrew's and Jacqueline (Owen) Williams, Monastery; sons, Joe, Fort McMurray and John (Susan), Afton. She is also survived by sister, Genevieve (Bob) Cater, Halifax; sister-in-law, Dianne Doiron, Pomquet and brother-in-law, Willie Morell, Pomquet; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Madeleine was predeceased by her husband, Leon; daughter, Karen; brother, John and stepfather, John C. Camreron. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Croix Church, Pomquet, Rev. Peter Baccardax presiding. Donations in her memory may be made to the Antigonish and Area Homemakers or a charity of choice.
SIMPSON, Evelyn Mae
95, Debert, passed away peacefully Friday, February 6, 2009, at home, surrounded by her family. Born in Debert, Evelyn was a daughter of the late Everett and May (Withrow) McCully. Evelyn was a member of Debert United Church, the U.C.W., and a long-term resident of Debert. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Myrtle Chapter 21. Evelyn loved to garden and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. She enjoyed going for her walks, knitting afghans for her grandchildren, and had a great passion for chocolates and ice cream. Evelyn had a great love for her family and also for her faithful dog, Skipper. She is survived by sons, Douglas (Betty) Truro; Gerald (Linda) Masstown; Robert (Gaye) Appleton, N.L.; daughters, Barbara Bennett (Tom) Louisville, Ky.; Brenda MacLeod, (David), Debert; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon McCully (Phyllis) Debert; sister, Beryl Putnam Debert. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; a daughter in infancy; brothers, George, Sid, Curtis. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today, where the Order of the Eastern Star Myrtle Chapter 21, will conduct a tribute service at 7:30 p.m. and where funeral service will take place Tuesday, February 10, at 2 p.m., all in Debert United Church, Debert. Rev. Brian DeLong will officiate, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at a later date in Main Road Cemetery, Debert. Donations in Evelyn's memory may be made to the Victoria Order of Nurses or to Debert United Church, Debert. SALLOWS, Leslie G. "Les"
69, Shubenacadie, passed away in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, February 3, 2009. Born in Alberta, Les was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and after 25 years service, he retired as a chef in the Halifax Navel Station. He was a resident of Shubenacadie for most of his life. He was a volunteer with the Fire Department and he also operated a canteen at the ball field. Les and his wife, Nellie were foster parents to several children. He is survived by his daughter, Diana "Lynn" Connell, Lantz; grandsons, Keith, Corey and Michael; great- grandson, Noah; friend, Audrey and her children, Adam, Eric, Matt, Shane and Curtis. Also survived by brothers, Art, Wayne, Vic, and Chuck, and sister, Beverly. He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Pearl); brothers, Roy and William, and sisters, Jean, Edith, Patricia and Margaret. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. No visitation or service by request. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in the spring.
BOUDREAU, Joan Evelyn
70. It is with deep sadness that we announce her passing in Richmond Villa Nursing Home, St. Peter's, on Thursday, February 5, 2009, with her loving husband by her side. Born in Petit De Grat, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Bertha Boudreau. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Renie, son Hector Wilfred (Connie) Boudreau, Halifax. Joan was predeceased by her brothers, Cletus, Linus and Delmore, sisters Margaret, Dorothy and Theresa in infancy. The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 p.m. to time of funeral at 3 p.m. in I.M.L. Funeral Home, Petit de Grat. Funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Petit De Grat today at 3 p.m. with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the St. Joseph's Parish Cemetery Fund.
GOODWIN, Laurena Alice
81, of Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Dayton, Yarmouth Co., died February 7, 2009, in the Villa. Born in Argyle she was a daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Owen) Hamilton. She is survived by brothers, Alan Hamilton and George (Mary) Hamilton, both of Yarmouth; sisters, Brenda Cosman, Yarmouth; Myrna (Darrell) Allen, Kempt, Yarmouth Co.; Dorothy (Bennett) d'Entremont, Pubnico. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar; stepmother, Edna Hamilton; brothers, Douglas and Richard. Visitation will be today from 4-9 p.m. in the West Pubnico Funeral Home, Middle West Pubnico, and Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. and funeral at 2 p.m., all in the Argyle Pubnico Baptist Church, Central Argyle, with Pastor Raymond Pitcher officiating. Interment will be held in the Green Grove Cemetery, Argyle Sound. Donations may be made to The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.
PORTER, Willis Colin
63, of Grafton, Kings Co. passed away suddenly, Friday, February 6, 2009, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, Kings Co., he was the son of Florence (Illsley) Porter, Grafton and the late Lawrence Porter. He attended Central Kings Rural High School and at the conclusion of grade 10 enrolled in the Wolfville school and later Acadia University, Wolfville. He was a sporting enthusiast with an active interest in basketball and had been inducted in the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially visiting his uncle, Eugene and cousin, Gail for their Monday night card games. He was co-owner of P. W. Sales in Coldbrook and was a regular 6 a.m. visitor of Tim Horton's in Coldbrook. In addition to his mother, he is survived by brothers, Gerald (LaVerne), Lakeville, Kings Co., and Dale, Grafton; sister, Connie (Irving) Fredericks, Black Rock; nieces, Pam (Douglas) Spidle, Karen (Wayne) Comeau, Kelly (Kenny) Mansfield, all of Black Rock; great-nieces and nephews, Wayne (Rebecca) and Nicole Spidle, Michael, Colin and Ethan Comeau, Korey and Kendra Mansfield; great great-nephew, Jake. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a nephew, Mark Porter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. CASHIN, Robert Emmett "Bob"
87, of Eastern Passage, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 in Northwood, Halifax. Born in Halifax he was the son of Emmett and Anne (Conway) Cashin. Bob retired from the Dartmouth Marine Slips and Halifax Shipyards in December 1986. Bob was a long-standing member of the Eastern Passage Cow Bay Lions Club. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mae (Chisholm); sons, John (Lydia) Kelowna, B.C.; Gary (Joan), Eastern Passage; daughter, Sharon Ingle, Brampton, Ont.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Todd, Derek, Pam, Jeff, Lisa and Robbie; eight great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild; brothers, Cyril, Dartmouth; Malcolm, Ontario. He was predeceased by sons, Robert and James; son-in-law, Leonard Ingle and daughter-in-law, Patricia Walsh; brothers, Frances and William. Cremation has taken place, visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Eastern Passage Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 11 in St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Shore Road, Eastern Passage, Father Gerald David officiating. BOURNEUF, Hélène Marie
Of Grosses Coques. It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother/grandmérè in the VG Site, QEII on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Born in Little Brook Station on March 5, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Edouard and Laura (Gaudet) Dugas. She was predeceased by her husband, Emile Joseph Bourneuf. Hélène was the last member of her immediate family which included six brothers, Arthur, Nelson, Wilfred, Bernie, Gerald, and "Petit Bernie in infancy"; three sisters, Marguerite, Evelina and Gertie. She will be lovingly remembered by daughter, Suzanne (Blair) Allen; son, François (Cynthia Robicheau) Bourneuf and grandsons, Mitchell Bourneuf, Dana and Jonah Allen. A wonderful mother, Grandmérè, Tante and friend with a tremendous sense of style, warmth and kindness which we will cherish in our hearts forever. Visitation in Meteghan Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Paroisse Sainte Marie, Church Point followed by a celebration of her life "Su Ben". YOUNG, Daniel Joseph
88, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Saturday February 7, 2009 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre Camphill Veteran's Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Daniel and Nellie (Corkum) Young. Daniel began his career serving with the Royal Canadian Army, and saw active service with the 10th Battery and Headquarters Coast Artillery Gunner Regiment from 1940-1945. He was later employed with the Federal Government for 27 years until his retirement from public service. He was a past member of RC Legion Somme Branch 31. Daniel will be remembered fondly for his outstanding kindness and friendship, sparkling eyes and smile and his devotion to his family and loving wife Jeannie. He is survived by sister Gertrude (Don) MacNeil, Bible Hill; sister, Gladys Urquhart, Halifax; daughter, Patsy "Pat" (Len) Bates, Dartmouth; sons, Fred and Carl, Dartmouth; Larry, Fall River; grandchildren Paula, Heather, Brenda, Danielle, Laura, Sara, Crisy, Dereck; great-grandchildren Lisa Bates, Gracie Ross; great-great granddaughter Madison Elizabeth. He was predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth Jean; sister Beatrice Stone. Visitation will, be held Wednesday February 11 from 7 -9 p.m., funeral service Thursday 10 a.m., all in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. A reception will follow in the funeral home. JENKINS, Walter Eugene
MacLellan's Brook, Pictou Co., died Saturday February, 7, 2009, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Ephriam and Agnes Louise (Tanner) Jenkins. Walter was a resident of MacLellan's Brook for a number of years, later moving to Ontario where he resided and worked for some 15 years. He later moved back to reside in MacLellan's Brook where he resided up until his death. He worked at various jobs throughout his working career, working for sometime as a Coal Miner and also as a Butcher. After returning to Pictou Co. from Ontario, Walter worked for Pictou County Transit as a Bus Driver from where he retired. After retiring, Walter kept busy with his lawn maintenance business, which he enjoyed very much. He was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church in MacLellan's Mountain. In good health, Walter enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his later years, he liked to play cards, especially crib. He has a quick wit and enjoyed a joke, loved to tease and have fun with his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, the former Judy Stewart, MacLellan's Brook; children, Heather (Tim) Lees, Calgary; Timothy (Marie) Jenkins, Calgary; Stacey (Craig) Stewart, Hamilton; Joshua, Calgary; and John, Toronto; grandchildren Matthew, Sarah, Emily, Michael, Amanda, Jesse, Devon, Tyler and Dylan; brothers, Stan, Fraser and Gordon, all of MacLellan's Brook; George, Greenwood; Fred, New Glasgow; sisters, Katherine Verschave, Waterdown, Ont.; Carol Gunn, Coalburn; Helen Lavoie, Burlington, Ont.; numerous nieces and nephews, and also survived by his first wife, Margaret Hood. He was predeceased by brother, Roy and a sister, Alice. His remains will rest in H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow for visiting from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today from where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Richard Sand officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Castle Hill Cemetery, MacLellan's Brook. Donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Society.
