OLIVER, Catherine "Isabel"
New Glasgow, formerly of Hopewell and Centredale, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Centredale, Pictou Co., May 24, 1915, she was a daughter of the late John and Christena (MacMillan) Russell. She grew up and went to school in Centredale. In 1941, she married R.C.A.F. Sgt. Roy J. Oliver. Sgt. Oliver was posted overseas shortly after the wedding and died in action in 1941. In 1950, she and her parents moved to Hopewell, where she cared for her parents until they passed away. She has lived in New Glasgow since 1997. She was a member of St. Columba United Church, Hopewell, and an adherent of Trinity Church since living in New Glasgow. She is survived by her sister, Jessie (Robert) Miller, New Glasgow; brother, Fred (Pearl) Russell, Wallace; sisters-in-law, Betty Russell, Stellarton, and Almira Russell, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, William, Ross, Robert, Hugh, and Charles Russell. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Columba United Church, Hopewell, with Rev. Heather Landry officiating. Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.
O'CONNELL, Ida Maye
83, of Johnson's H.A. Manor, Church Street, Truro, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Stewiacke East, Colchester Co., she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Janet (Grant) O'Connell. Ida was a faithful employee of Stanfield's Limited, Truro, for 38 years. She enjoyed socializing and taking part in the activities at the manor. She attended St. James Presbyterian Church, Truro, where she was a member. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Ida was predeceased by brothers, Jim, Ben, Smith and sister, Mary. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, in Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro, with Dr. Brian Ross officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Interment will be held at a later date in South Branch Cemetery, South Branch. Donations in Ida's memory may be made to St. James Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice.
BEAVER, Lillian
87. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our adored mother, Lillian Beaver, of Murphy Cove and Halifax, on March 2, 2009, in Arborstone Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late Oliver and Margaret (Newcombe) Beaver and the beloved wife of the late Hugh Beaver. Mum loved playing bingo and having a great laugh as we so often did. She is survived by her children, Clyde Beaver, Lake Echo; Janet (David Connor) Boutilier, Eastern Passage; Linda (Guy) Butler, Garnet (Shelley) Beaver and Bonny (Dale) Moses, all of Lower Sackville; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren and a very large family of stepchildren, stepgrandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Amanda James and Elizabeth Lambert. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh; brothers, Howard, Raymond; two stepchildren; daughter-in-law; step son-in-law and two stepgrandchildren. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, both in D.S. Crowell & Son Funeral Home, 22558 Main St., Sheet Harbour. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 6, in St. Peter's Church, Murphy Cove, at 1 p.m., Rev. Kevin Frankland officiating. Burial in Shoal Bay Cemetery. BALTZER, Shirley Arbuckle
82, of Aylesford, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Merigomish, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Bessie (Arbuckle) Mason. Shirley worked as a nurse in Berwick Hospital for over 40 years specializing in obstetrics. She supported her husband Paul in various ways throughout his many occupational ventures. Shirley was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her many family and friends. Shirley is survived by her sons, Mark (Cathy), Somerset; Michael (Rhonda), Aylesford; grandchildren, Thomas and Emily Baltzer, Aylesford; Adam Baltzer, Aylesford; Amy Baltzer, Halifax; Holly Baltzer, Somerset. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Paul; sisters, Hilda Roy, Ruby Day, Charlotte MacKay, Emily MacEachern, Eva Whynott and Virginia Sweet. Visitation for Mrs. Baltzer will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, NS B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900). LeBLANC, Charles Edward "Ti-Charles"
72, of Middle West Pubnico died in Yarmouth Regional Hosital on March 2, 2009, from injuries sustained from a fall. Born in Middle West Pubnico, he was a son of the late Ambroise "Ti-Bill" and Hilda Anna (Surette) LeBlanc. He was a scallop fisherman for most of his life and was a member of Les Nouveaux Horizons de le Barronie, Pubnico Ouest, Le Reveil de Pombcoup and Yarmouth County Crime Prevention Association. He is survived by his wife, Adeline Marie (LeBlanc) LeBlanc; son, Robert "Bobby" (Crystal) of Pubnico; daughter, Rose (Greg) Cottreau of Lower West Pubnico; stepson, Henri (Irene) Thibodeau of Meteghan River; stepdaughters, Anne-Marie (Claude) LeBlanc of South Bear Cove; Bernadette (Robert) Saulnier of Metehan River; Alice (Ambroise) Comeau of Lower Saulnierville; brothers, Louis (Lea) of West Pubnico; Denis (Helen) of Lower West Pubnico; Tom (Joan) of Middle West Pubnico; sisters, Anna (Anaclat) d'Entremont of Liverpool; Ruth (Don) Belliveau of Shediac; grandchildren, Skylar, Kaylee and Alex; seven stepgrandchildren, and one step great-grandson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Seraphie; son, Gilbert; daughters, Mathilda and Rosa; brothers, Leon "Leo", and Simon. Remains will be resting in West Pubnico Funeral Home, Middle West Pubnico with visitation from 4-9 p.m. today and from 9-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 5. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday March 5 in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Middle West Pubnico with Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Mathilda LeBlanc Memorial Fund or the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Ti-Charles was an avid hunter and a hockey and baseball fan. In earlier years he got great joy from watching his sons play hockey. In his retirement he enjoyed doing art drawings. Ti-Charles will be remembered by the big smile he always had on his face and will be dearly missed by all his family and friends especially his grandchildren, Skylar, Kaylee and Alexander, who brought great joy to his life.
LENAGHAN, Alan Walter
76, Halifax, passed away suddenly at home, February 27, 2009. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Harold and Louise (Hussey) Lenaghan. In his earlier years he was a member of the Sea Cadets and had many fond memories of travelling across Canada with them. He also enjoyed his time as a member of the Mayflower Curling Club. Alan worked for 45 years at the Halifax Shipyards. He is survived by his wife, the former Raymona Smith; son, Raymond; daughter, Alayne(Glenn) MacInnis; grandchildren, Blair and Alexis; brother, Edward (Dora), all of Halifax; sister, Carol (Mike) Copeland, of Moncton. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 5, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6, both in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Rev. Carson Baxter officiating. Burial in St. John's Columbarium. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of one's choice.
WILLIAMS, Maynard Graham
69, of Kentville. It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father at home on Monday, March 2, 2009. He was a son of the late Roland and Myrtle Williams (Ostrea Lake, Halifax Co.). Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Jeanie; son, Jamie and daughter-in-law, Judy; brothers, Kenneth, Leonard and Michael; sisters, Vivian, Sheila, Rose and Dale. He was predeceased by brothers, Cameron and Wayne. His automotive career spanned five decades in Dartmouth, Toronto, St. John's, Truro and New Minas. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Through his membership in the Rotary Club of Kentville, Maynard became a supporter of the Flowercart in New Minas. The Flowercart promotes community participation of adults with intellectual challenges by increasing their employability. WATSON, David Alexander
67, Ainsworth, B.C., formerly of Pictou County, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2009, in Kootenay Regional Hospital. Born February 14, 1942, in Six Mile Brook, he was the son of the late Norman and Gertrude (Graham) Watson. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his eldest son, Allen, Manitoba, also sister, Virginia, and brother, Ronald in childhood. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Watson; children, Nancy (Eric), (Nadine) widow of Allen, Mike (Gretta), Paul (Bev), Laura (Carl), Justin (Melina); stepchildren, Duane, Doug, and Tanya, 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Helen, Neil (Irene), Roxie (Sid), Allie, Shirley (Wally), Flora (Barry) and Jean. Dad was an adventurous spirit, which led him across Canada numerous times. He was well-known for his master carpentry skills, love of horses, and being an avid outdoorsman. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
NICKERSON, Michael Conway "Granny"
North East Point, Shelburne Co., passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2009, at his home. Born in Shelburne on February 19, 1954, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Alice (Smith) Nickerson. Michael was employed as a lobster fisherman and enjoyed taking walks across the causeway. Michael had a good sense of humour and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. Survived by daughter, Lynette, Ontario; brother, Dwight (Marlene), Hartz Point; sister, Roseanne (Derek Maleman), Hammonds Plains; nephew, Colin, Tantallon; niece, Malizza (Regan Brunette), Toronto Ont.; several aunts, uncles and family members. Interment will be in Old Kirk Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to H. Huskilsons Funeral Home, Barrington.
FALT (Lafitte), Mary Katherine
Of Antigonish, passed away peacefully Monday, March 2, 2009, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital. Born in Mabou September 3, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Flora (MacLellan) MacDougall. Mary was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59 Antigonish. She was also a member of St. Ninian's CWL, St. Martha's Hospital Auxiliary and was active in the Liberal Association. Mary was proud of her celtic heritage and was a founding member of the Clan MacDougall Society of Antigonish. She was also an avid bridge player. Surviving are daughters, Anne (George) Baxter, Addington Forks; Geraldine (Matt) Whitehead, Antigonish; stepdaughters, Barbara (Doug) MacNeil, Antigonish; Donna (Joe) Martell, New Brunswick; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and brother, Dougald (Doreen), Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her first husband, Gerald Lafitte and second husband, Mansfield "Dot" Falt, and brothers, Neil, Charles and Murdoch MacDougall. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Friday in St. Ninian's Cathedral. Burial in the parish cemetery.
