SHEPHERDSON, Wellington Clairmont "Duke"
91, Sydney, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Ontario, he was the son of the late Albert and Rena Shepherdson. Survived by his wife the former Elizabeth O'Day; stepchildren, Sharon, Wayne, Richard, Gary, Ronnie, Larry, step grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his siblings. Predeceased by a stepchild, Stanley; brother, Lloyd and three sisters, Mildred, Mary and Clarissa. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
STEVENS , Bernard Herbert
76 years of age, Little Harbour, passed away peacefully March 27, 2009 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Little Harbour, he was a son of the late Gordon and Ethel (McKay) Stevens. He worked many years as a stevedore and retired from his job as a foreman with Ceres Corp in Halifax. He was an avid fisherman, he also enjoyed hunting and spending time with his friends and family in Little Harbour. Bernard had a passion for Bluegrass music and enjoyed travelling and attended many Bluegrass events. He was also a member of the Nova Scotia Bluegrass Association . He took an active role in community service and for many years was a member of the Spry Harbour Atoms Club. He is survived by his loving partner, Marty McKay for whom our family is eternally grateful for her compassion and love; daughters, Juanita Staple, Musquodoboit Harbour; Bernice Stevens, Cambridge; Terry Stevens, Wolfville; Shelley Ritchie (Don), Cole Harbour; sons, Merlin, Kitchener, Ont.; Bernie (Julia), Toronto; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, who will always remember him as a loving, caring person. He is also survived by sisters, Frances DeBaie, Emma (Les) Harlow, Helen Wilson and Diane (Lionel) Mason; brothers, Fulton and Eric (Judy). He was predeceased by brothers, Aubrey , Art and Austin. The funeral mass will be held in St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Musquodoboit Harbour on Wednesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. with Father Mark Cherry, officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dartmouth Funeral Home, Queen St. "They say that a mans reputation can be judged by the friends he has. O'HAGAN, Andrena Frances
Died at Oakwood Terrace in Dartmouth on March 29, 2009, in her 101st year. Born in Truro on June 8, 1908, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and William Stevens. She spent her teenage and adult years in Halifax. She was a founding member of Edgewood United Church, and a Life Member of UCW. She also provided organ music for many church services, weddings and funerals, as well as UCW general meetings. She also played the organ for Cruikshank's and Atlantic Funeral Homes for many years. Her family and her church were the most important things in her life. She was a generous and caring woman, who was often seen providing meals for sick and shut-ins. She is survived by her four daughters, Carolyn (David) Barwise, Maureen (Robert) Whitman, Jeanette Campbell, Beverly (Fred) Were; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles O'Hagan. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road on Wednesday, April 1. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. in Edgewood-Oxford United Church with Rev. David Hann officiating. Family flowers only. LEE, Barry Ralph John
48, the family regrets to announce his passing in Calgary Hospital on March 25, 2009, after a brief illness. Born and raised in Dartmouth he was the son of Richard and Joan Lee. Barry left Dartmouth at the age of 18 to move to Calgary. He is survived by daughter, Lisa; son, Sam; former wife/friend, Rita and two grandchildren, all of Calgary. He is also survived by sisters, Debra George (Harry), Bonnie MacDonald (Randy); sister-in-law, Marg Lee and many nieces and nephews, all of Dartmouth. Barry was predeceased by brother, Rickey. Family memorial service to be held at a later date in Dartmouth.
BALTZER, Everett William
71, of Wilmot, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Middleton he was as son of the late Earle and Myrtle (Hatt) Baltzer. Everett was employed with G.W. Sampson, Kingston for 46 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and particularly enjoyed spending time with and raising Chocolate Labs and Setters. Everett will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Linda (Sawler); daughters, Cheryl (Terry Boudreau) Baltzer, Wilmot; Brenda (Rod Greer) Bouchard, Greenwood, and Gayle (Rae Acker) Baltzer, Kingston; brothers, John (Marilyn) Baltzer, Bridgewater and Gordon (Carlyn) Baltzer, Lunenburg; grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa, Kyle, Kristen, Jason, Alicia and great-granddaughter, Mikala. SLAUENWHITE, Jean Adele
84, of Boutilier's Point, passed away Saturday March 28, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Boutilier's Point on June 18, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Oliver D. and Viola M. (Williams) Dauphinee. As a young woman, Jean worked for the Nova Scotia Power Commission as a Meter Reader. She married Milford in 1944 and started their family soon after. With a "If you can't beat them, join them." attitude, they worked in her family's grocery business. From delivering and selling groceries in a truck, they succeeded over the years and eventually built Hubbards Shopping Centre. They worked together until Milford's death in 1986 and then Jean continued on being active in the business on a daily basis until July 2005 when she was diagnosed and beat cancer. She continued to keep an interest in the business until her death and was proactive on doing what had to be done. Jean was a 58 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Charter Member of Mystic Star, No. 40, Head of St. Margaret's Bay. She was interested in genealogy and liked to spend time in her gardens. She is survived by her children, David (Bonita), Hampton, N.B.; Marion (Dave) Armstrong, Cornwall, Ont.; Vance (Debra), Hubbards; Irene (Paul) Harnish, Wentzell Lake; Lois (Chris), Boutilier's Point; grandchildren, Nova, Mexico; Christopher (Anne), Jordan Falls; Steven (Nancy), New Brunswick; Michael (Billie-Jo), Ontario; Malcolm (Julia) Armstrong, Ontario; Nathan, Hubbards; Drew, Halifax; Sean, Hubbards; Jennifer and Adam Harnish, Wentzell Lake; Sophia, Boutilier's Point; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Ontario; Brooke, Jordan Falls; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Milford R.; daughter, Judith A; grandson, Gregory P. Harnish; brothers, O. Graham and Ross E.; sister, V. Mary Cavicchi. BEEBE, Donald Lloyd
82, of Wentworth, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche. Born in Wentworth he was a son of the late Merton and Ethel (Ralph) Beebe. Don owned and operated his own trucking business for over 50 years and also worked in the forestry industry. He enjoyed his "hobbies" which included spending time in the sugar woods as well as tending to his blueberry fields. Don is survived by his wife of 57 years the former Dorothy Langille; sons, Barry (Linda) of Hartland, N.B.; Greg (Else) of Norway; Randy of Wentworth; grandsons, Daniel, Seth, Nathan (Shirley), Jared (Jennifer), David, Matthew (Christine); granddaughter, Jackie (Jeremy); great-granddaughter, Kayden; brother, Brenton (Hazel); sister, Joyce (Laurie) Carruthers, both of Central New Annan. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in MacDiarmid's Funeral Home, Wentworth (447-2930). TUCKER, LT. COL., M.B.E., John Erskine "Jack"
Jack Tucker passed away peacefully at the Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia in his 99th year, beloved husband for 72 years of Elsie Neve-Tucker also now residing in Halifax. The son of Frederick Davis Tucker and Sarah Montgomery, both of Toronto, Jack is survived by his daughter, Norma, Victoria B.C. and her three sons Ramsey, Omar and Dean Azim, all of Victoria and by Jack's son, Arthur and his wife, Kathleen Kasper Halifax, and their sons, Devin, his wife, Shelliza Mohammed, Vancouver, and Strahan, Nanaimo. Predeceased by his three brothers Alec, Bob and Harry, he is survived only by his sister-in-law Mary Tucker, Winnipeg, widow of Bob. Born in Toronto, raised in Winnipeg, Jack met Elsie as a fellow employee of T.E. Eatons Co., Calgary, and members of Eatons Hiking Club; Calgary was Elsie's home town. Married in 1937, Jack served in the Canadian Army, Ordinance Corp during the war 1940 to 45, leaving two children at home in Calgary. Jack served in England, France and Northern Germany. He was awarded the M.B.E. for war service. After the war Jack chose to continue a career with the Armed Services and retired as Lt. Col., having been stationed successively in Toronto, Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa, London and Montreal again. His last posting was as the Canadian member of the United Nations Peace Commission in Vietnam 1961-62. After retiring from the Army, Jack worked for 12 years as a Personnel Manager with Imperial Tobacco, Head Office Montreal. Jack and Elsie were Kenaston Ave. residents of the Town of Mount Royal, Montreal QC, for 50 years. They were members of St. Peter's Church, avid gardeners, active participants for years in ballroom dancing and sculpting. They were long-time members of the Montreal Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA), leading an active life in recreational sport and were also regular subscribers for 25 years of the Montreal Symphony and Montreal Opera Company. Jack drove his own car until aged 94. After a fall and hip replacement for Jack in the spring 2007, Jack and Elsie moved to Halifax to be with Arthur and Kathleen, their son and daughter-in-law. A man of good humour, gracious and dedicated as both parent and friend, Jack will be sorely missed by his family and the many friends of Jack and Elsie now scattered across the country. His last 17 months spent at Camp Hill Vets were happy months, surrounded by his wife and family, new friends and activities, his spirits and confidence buoyed by the consistently wonderful care given by the staff. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday April 1, at Snow's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax where the funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Rev. Andrea McIntyre will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Monday, April 6 at 2 p.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to: QEII - Veterans Memorial Building Fund.
EDE, Albert Edward
80, Porters Lake, passed away on March 28, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Halifax on October 8, 1928, the son of the late William and Ellen (Brackley) Ede. He served our country with the Merchant Marine during the Second World War. He was employed with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and later with Glubes until his retirement. He loved to build model ships and paint landscapes and scenaries. He also enjoyed crosswords and trivia. He is survived by, and will be sadly missed by daughters, Ellen Carpenter (Bob Cross), Elizabeth Swinimer (Tim); sons, Albert Jr. (Sheila), Gerald (Joanne), Kelvin (Julie) and David (Sue). He is also survived by brother, Walter and sister, Florence; many nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Hazel; son, Hubert and sister, Helen. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the good fortune to know him. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Jome, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A private burial with family and friends in attendance will take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens 1 p.m. Wednesday April 1, 2009. Family flowers only. MacINNIS, Laurie Archibald
86, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 28, 2009, in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Archibald and Lucy (Wood) MacInnis. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the Armoured Corps, Three Rivers Regiment in North Africa, England, France, Italy and Holland. Following the war he had been employed as an automotive mechanic and worked with F.W. Robinson, Cornwallis Motors and Bonnyman Pontiac form where he retired. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former, Edith Hayden; daughters, Carolyn (Mel) Bowdridge, Chester; Kathryn "Kathy" (Michael) Keith, Cambridge; son, Kenneth (Debbie), Kentville; grandchildren, Holly Bowdridge, Michael (Jennet) Bowdridge, Trina (Sean) Pulsifer, Adam Keith, Kristine (Daly) Cook and Krystal MacInnis; four great-grandchildren, Erin Bowdridge, Julian, Lita and Hannah Keith. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Ashby. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Rev. John McNally officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. 91, Pictou, died March 25, 2009, in the Maritime Oddfellows Home. Born in Pictou, he was a son of the late Alex and Ada (Joudrie) Dalton. Survived by sons, Fred, Philip, Jack, daughters Patricia and Pamela, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Jean (Shea); son, Charles; daughter, Mary Hamilton; brothers, Ernie, Fred, and Tommy; sisters, Elizabeth, Mabel, and Victoria. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. A private family funeral service will take place on Tuesday. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery.
DEVEAU, Marie Vénérante
90, Middle Sackville, formerly of Mavillette, Digby Co., passed away March 30, 2009, at home in Middle Sackville. She was born in Mavillette, Digby Co., and was predeceased by her parents Philamon Doucet and Alice (Deveau) Doucet. Marie was a homemaker, an excellent cook and baker. She also loved quilting and knitting. She loved bingo and her family and was an animal lover. She loved to shop and was fussy about her clothing and never went to church without her hat. She is survived by daughter, Sandra (Denis) Deveau, Middle Sackville; adopted son, Norman Doucet; grandchildren, Nicole Deveau (Andrew Stewart), Hamilton, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Sanford; brothers, Etienne and Fidele; sisters, Agnes Doucet, Melina Deveau and Elizabeth Doucet. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Thursday in T.K. FLEMMING, Reginald George
86, Halifax, passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 27, 2009, in Northwood Centre. A lifelong Halifax resident, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joyce Eileen (Neily) Flemming. He was a devoted son of the late William James and Lillian Rose (Crawford) Flemming. He proudly served Canada in the Second World War in the RCAF (436 Squadron). He worked for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation for 36 years, retiring from the mechanical branch at Miller's Lake. His interests in life revolved around the outdoors. Whether fishing with his brother, Doug, golfing, working on cars or building things, Dad did everything with enthusiasm. However, his greatest passion was reserved for his wife and family. We all remember many happy vacation trips and countless hours spent learning his favorite sporting skills. Dad always made family his top priority. He is survived by son, Brian Flemming, Halifax; daughters, Sharon Flemming-Merrill (Rick), Halifax and Heather Flemming, Herring Cove; grandchildren, Heather, Patrick, Jasmine and stepgrandchildren, Jeff, Chris, Matthew. He is also survived by brother, William (Ena) Flemming, Whitby, Ont.; sister, Lillian (Albert) Shaw, Halifax; sister-in-law, Betty Flemming, Halifax and a large number of much-loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Douglas Flemming, Halifax. Visitation will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 3. A funeral mass will be held in St. Theresa's Church on North Street in Halifax at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, with reception to follow. Burial will take place in Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville. Family flowers only.
