FRASER, Kenneth George

77, Cheticamp, passed away March 31, 2009, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Alexander Martin Fraser and Mamie Chiasson Fraser. Kenneth was a renowned boat builder and craftsman. He was the owner and operator of Fraser and Chiasson Building Supplies for over 40 years. He will always be remembered for his love of trout fishing and snowmobiling in the Highlands of Cape Breton. Kenneth will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Pauline Poirier; son, Kenneth Fraser Jr. (Priscille), Cheticamp; daughters, Norma Travis (Jerry), Sydney; Paula Fraser, Halifax; Gisèle Fraser (Barry Babineau), Halifax; sister, Pauline MacDonald (Rod), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Stephen Travis, Newfoundland; Paul Travis, Scotland; Keith Fraser, Cheticamp. Visitation will be today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 4, at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp, Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch, or to a charity of your choice.

BISHOP, Mimie

97. Mrs. Mimie Bishop passed away peacefully on April 1, 2009, Tideview Nursing Home in Digby. She was born in Weymouth Falls, Digby Co., June 19, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Rodney and Harriett (Barton) Cromwell. Mrs Bishop was a faithful member of St. Matthews Anglican Church (Weymouth Falls), a member of the United Church Womem's Auxilary and taught Sunday school for a time at the United Church in Weymouth when called upon. She also was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 67, Women's Auxilary. She was very spiritual and a willing Christian servant of her Lord Jesus. As a pillar and matriarch of the Weymouth Falls community she enjoyed fellowship with many throughout Weymouth, as well as throughout Yarmouth, Digby and Annapolis Counties. Affectionately called "Mom Bishop", she was a counsel and peacemaker to a great many who entrusted her caring, loving, and confident personality. Many children and mature individuals were blessed by her wisdom, guidance and teachings she shared throughout her life. Mom Bishop loved and lived a full, exciting Christian life, enjoying hobbies such as gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, playing sheet music hymns and singing along. She was dedicated to her daily Bible reading and several spiritual books and musicals. She loved to travel and spent much of her years visiting family and friends in several cities of Canada, United States and her in-laws in Barbados, WI. One of her favorite "pearls of wisdom" was to advise to "Love God, give a little of yourself and you'll gain a lot. Mom Bishop was love. Surviving are daughters, Deanna Bishop, Lynn, Mass.; Madeline Parker, Ottawa, Ont.; sons, Nelson "Garfield", Weymouth Falls; Dudley, Toronto, Ont.; Ensley (Tina), Halifax; Leonard "Delbert", Calgary, Alta.; Henry(Regina), Dartmouth; Benson (Lucie), Dartmouth; stepson, Claude (Tammie), Edmonton, Alta.; brother, Nelson Cromwell, Weymouth Falls; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Barry; daughters, Edna Marie Hutton, and two daughters in infancy; sons, Silas and Bellefield; sister, Madeline; brothers, Emery and Raleigh Cromwell. Vistation will be 7-9 p.m. today in Jayne's Funeral Home, Weymouth North. Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday in St Matthew's Anglican, Weymouth Falls, Father Bill Burt will officiate. Interment in church cemetery. Repast immediately following the service. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Matthew's Anglican Church, or Tideview Terrace, Digby. O'CONNELL, Patrick "Pat"

58, Halifax, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Jack O'Connell and Mary (Campbell) O'Connell. He is survived by his loving wife, Heather (McCorry); sister, Mary (Baxter) Wiseman, Glace Bay; brothers, Joe (Betty) O'Connell, Ontario; Jack O'Connell, Ontario; children, Shauna, Sydney River; Darren, Halifax; Kevin (Lisa), Enfield; Kim (Jimmy), Herring Cove; Ryan, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Zachery, Grace, Connell, Ashley, Mitchell, Rachel, Jenna and Raylene. He is predeceased by brothers, Sonny, Buddy, Cam and sister, Shirley. Pat was a kind, gentle man who through the presence of the Lord, reflected on his life to move forward to put his family first and foremost. His love and patience through helping others will be greatly missed, especially by his family and those associated through Bill W. and friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 12 noon-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, in Grace Chapel, 255 Ross St., Halifax. Service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

MacArthur, Ronald G.

Sydney, 1931 - 2009. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ronald Gerard MacArthur, of Sydney, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital on April 2, 2009. Born in Glace Bay, Dad was the son of the late Judge Neil R. and Anne E. MacArthur, Sydney. Dad was an educator for over forty years. In the early years, he taught at Riverview Rural High School. Dad and his partner, Edward Currie, founded and operated the Cape Breton Business College. Dad is survived by his wife (our mother), Sally (MacDonald); children, Mary Elaine (John) Muise, Sydney; Alan (Debbie), Alberta; Brian (Leslie), Sydney; Cathy (Robert) Bobbett, Arizona; and Peggy at home. He was predeceased by an infant son, Neil. Dad was cherished by his grandchildren, Katie and Janine Muise, Sarah and Adam MacArthur, Moira and Meghan MacArthur, and Jill, Jocelyn, and Bradley Bobbett. Also surviving are sisters, Sister Genevive MacArthur (CSM), Antigonish; Sister Helen MacArthur (CSM), Antigonish; and Leone MacArthur, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Genevive MacArthur and Evelyn MacArthur; brother-in-law, Bernard Steele, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and infant son, Dad was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses, Mary MacLeod (Neil), Jimmy (Norma), Leo, Gerald, Donald (Helen), Rod, Rita Gillis (Hugh), and Theresa Steele. At Dad's request, his body has been donated to Dalhousie University for medical research. There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 4, at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church in Sydney, with Father Anthony O'Connor officiating. Friends are invited to the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion, Esplanade, immediately following the mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, P.O. Box 561, Sydney, NS, B1P 6H4, or ALS Society of Nova Scotia, 3433 Dutch Village Rd., Unit #3, Halifax, NS B3N 2S7.

OLIVER (Gillis), Evelyn Marie

1940-2009, Halifax/New Waterford. It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Evelyn, on April 1, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born June 8, 1940, in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Duncan and Nelina (MacMillin) Gillis. Evelyn was a former member of The Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. A natural caregiver, Evelyn was retired from her position as a P.C.W. from Northwood Manor in Halifax. Left to mourn are her children, Bonita, Ottawa, Ont.; Kathey (Manning) Lee and Kelley (Bernie) Burke, both of New Waterford and Kevin, Elnora, Alta. She will be sadly missed by her beloved grandchildren, Tamara Connors, Pamela Gillis, and Morgan Reid, Lindsy, Emily and Nicholas Burke, Shannon and Molly Lee; her cherished great-grandchildren Kaylee, Kiarra and Keigan Connors. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Raymond Oliver, New Waterford and sisters, Danina (Brian) Bates, New Waterford and Agnes 'Toogie' Cooke, Glace Bay. Evelyn will be remembered fondly by her dearest friends, Ruby, Greg and Claudia of Halifax. Evelyn is predeceased by her eldest daughter, Karen (Michael) Reid; brothers, Duncan 'Gussie', Allan 'Allie', Stanley, Keith and Brian and sister, Margaret-Ann Bickerton. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 5, from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Evelyn will take place Monday, April 6, at 10 a.m. in The Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in St Agnes Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held in St. Agnes Hall immediately following the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

NICHOLSON, Clarence

88, Bucklaw, Victoria Co., died April 1, 2009, in Alderwood Rest Home. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Donald and Jennie (Davidson) Nicholson. He was a member of Little Narrow's Presbyterian Church. His last years of work were at Little Narrow's Gypsum Plant. He is survived by brother Ernest Nicholson, Whycocomagh; sisters, Mora Johnson, Ontario; Viola (Mack) Garland, Baddeck; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife, Reta Nicholson; sisters, Irene, Ina and Della; brothers, Ian and Eric. The body is resting in Little Narrow's Presbyterian Church with visitation from 2 p.m. until time of service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 5, Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Little Narrows Cemetery in the Spring. Donations may be made to Little Narrow's Presbyterian Church or Alderwood Rest Home. Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.

CALDWELL, Stuart Eugene

79, of Sweets Corner, Hants Co., passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on October 26, 1929, in Wentworth Creek, Hants Co., he was the son of the late Murray and Gladys (Caldwell) Caldwell. Stuart was retired from Domtar Gypsum, Windsor, where he worked for 25 years. He had previously owned an Irving Service Station in Garlands Crossing and had also worked at numerous other service stations. He loved to play cards and was blessed with many friends and family with the same interest. Stuart is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Elizabeth "Libby" Ann McMahon; sons, John, Vancouver, B.C.; Kenneth (Karen), 14 Wing Greenwood; numerous cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers in infancy. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor. Visitation and a memorial reception will be held between 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in the Sweets Corner Community Hall. Interment will be held at a later date in Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Stuart may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sweets Corner Memorial Park Fund or to the Sweets Corner Community Hall.

BENJAMIN, Viola Mae

73, Waterville, Kings Co., passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, with her loving family at her side. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late James and Frances (Rogers) Benjamin. Viola was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, and was an adherent of the Waterville Baptist Church. She had been a Brownie Leader and enjoyed taking photographs and had been employed by Jeff Wilson Photography. Viola loved to do crafts, was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed horses. Surviving are her children, Wanda (Allan) Rose, Kentville; Sheila (Larry) Reese, Cambridge Sta.; Paul (Sally) Welton, Blemheim, Ont.; grandchildren, Samantha (Paul) Durling; Jason (Jill) Reese, Lacey Reese (Corey Peterson); Kyle and Mitchell Welton; great-grandchildren, Megan, Alyssa and Amber; brothers, James (Margaret) Benjamin Jr., Edmonton, Alta.; Wesley (Wendy) Benjamin, London, Ont.; Carl Benjamin, Kentville; sisters, Dorothy (Louis) Kerr, Avonport; Edith (Rae) Hiltz, Port Williams. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband, Thomas Welton. Visitation for Viola will take place 7-9 p.m. today in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900), from where the funeral service will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 4, Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiating. Burial in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.

FRASER, Eileen Agnes

87, East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, and formerly of East New Annan, passed away April 1, 2009, in the Lodge. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late William and Eileen (Hutchinson) Fraser. Eileen worked in New York for Avon Products Inc. for 18 years in the accounting department. After retiring, she moved to Nova Scotia and became active in her new community as a member and secretary of the Fraser Cultural Society, and served for a few years as President of the New Annan Community Club. She liked to have Christmas parties at her home for the Community Club and Church members. She liked to do handwork such as knitting, crochet and embroidery. Surviving is a niece, Janet Del Gudice, Yonkers, N.Y.; nephew, William Fraser, New York; good friends, Judy Lepper and Charlotte Purdy. She will be missed by her beloved cat, "Honey". She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Philip Tracy; brother, William Fraser. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today in Coulter's Funeral Home (657-3288) 48 Riverside Dr., Tatamagouche, N.S. B0K 1V0. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4 in Central New Annan United Baptist Church, Pastor Darrell Dykens officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Tatamagouche Mountain Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to North Shore Health Services Foundation or Colchester SPCA.

GARNETT, Brian Joseph

55, Forest Glade, passed away, Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at home. Born in Berwick, he was a son of Leslie and Doris (Salsman) Garnett, Forest Glade. Having been born and raised around horses, his love of them and competition lead him to become a very successful horse puller. He competed all over the Maritimes and the New England States, bringing home many 1st place trophies. Brian was very knowledgeable at what he did and was always willing to share his experiences. He worked at Larsen's Packers in Berwick as a butcher and kill floor foreman for 18 years, he also roofed, maintained orchards, shod many horses and most importantly he was a great father! Brian is survived by his fiancée and best friend, Deborah Spidell; father, Leslie "Sonny" and mother, Doris all of Forest Glade; daughters, Melanie (Mark "Bart") Collins, Cold Lake, Alta.; Angela "Herb" Garnett (Ian "Lurch" Dingwall), Greenwood; Ashley "Mable" Garnett (Nick "Spud" Wilkie), Cold lake, Alta,; Courtney "Boo" Garnett, Aylesford; stepdaughter, Tracy Spidell (Adam Wentzell), Bridgewater; step son, Trevor (Lydia) Spidell, Bridgewater; brother, David Garnett, Cambridge; grandsons, Coen Collins and Ty Wentzell; nieces, Sherry (Robin) Grant, Centreville; Shelley (Steven) Garnett, Waterville; nephew, Jody Garnett, New Minas; two great-nieces and three great-nephews as well as many dear friends. By Brian's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in Margaretsville Fire Hall. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Donations in memory may be made to the Western Nova Scotia Draft Horse Association or the Annapolis Valley Exhibition.

RODENHISER, Leonard Ralph

75, Fall River, passed away April 2, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Day Spring, Bridgewater, he was the son of Amy and Arthur Rodenhiser. Leonard was with the Halifax Regional School Board for 34 years, teaching at George P. Vanier Junior High, Fall River, and Bloomfield Junior High, Halifax. He was also a Night School Shop Teacher, GPV. He loved working with his wife in the wood shop building things for his friends and family. He also loved building model boats and barbecuing with his friends and family. He was an avid dart player with the Mens' Suburban Dart League and a past president of Dieppe No. 90, Waverley Legion. His favourite saying was, "Tunderin - Tunderin". He was a loving father and husband, and everyone enjoyed his sense of humour and his jokes. He is survived by wife, Norma; daughter, Tina (Craig) Faulkner, Middle Sackville; son, Barry (Jennifer) Rodenhiser, Lower Sackville; sisters, Phillis Hill, Ottawa, Ont.; Florence Oickle, Auburn, Bridgewater; Beatrice Fancy, Hebbs Cross, Bridgewater; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Lincoln Rodenhiser and son, Terry Rodenhiser. Visitation will be held today in Rock Church Chapel, from 12-2 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 6, in Rock Church, Lower Sackville, at 2 p.m., with Rev. David Arthur officiating. Reception to follow. Committal to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

PAUL, Ann Marie

58, Eastern Passage, passed away suddenly on April 2, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Genevieve (Griffith) Babineau. She was employed with Thornes Ltd., and more recently worked as an usher at the Halifax Metro Centre. In the summer months she enjoyed camping with her husband at Lake Pleasant Campground. She is survived by her husband, Dan; daughter, Monique (Shawn) Warner, East Chezzetcook; son, Eric (Sheena), Calgary, Alta.; granddaughters, Brooklyn and Madison. She is also survived by sisters, Doris Curren, Pauline (Roy) Sampson, and Linda (Cecil) Capstick; brother, Kevin Babineau; all of Sydney. Visitation will be Monday from 7-8 p.m., followed by a memorial, with Rev. Patricia Malin officiating, all in Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home, 5 Cow Bay Rd., Eastern Passage. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

WINMILL (Brodhurst), Joan Mary

Died peacefully at home with her children at her side on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the age of 73. Beloved and devoted wife of the late Thomas (2001); dear mother of Dennis and his wife, Anne Marie of Oakville, Ont.; David and his wife, Laura of Halifax; Catherine and her husband, Warren Saunders of St. Catharines, Ont., and Paul and his wife, Heather of Burlington, Ont. Nana will be lovingly remembered by Jennifer and her husband, Lindsay Haley, Mark and Allison Winmill, Jessica and Jasmine Winmill, Sean Saunders, Chris Saunders and his wife, Amalia, Ian and Claire Winmill; and by her great-grandchildren, Natalia Saunders and William Haley; dear sister of Monica and her husband, Lloyd Simmonds of Port Colborne, Ont.; Theresa Weaver and Henry of Welland, Ont.; Clem Brodhurst and his wife, Nancy of Stoney Creek, Ont., and the late Harry Brodhurst. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Joan was a founding member of St. Julia Church, St. Catharines, Ont. and a member of the choir since the parish was formed, a former volunteer with Association for Community Living and the Hotel Dieu/Shaver Hospital. Friends may call at the George Darte Funeral Chapel, 585 Carlton St., on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated in St. Julia Church on Monday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. Rite of committal will take place in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Vigil prayers will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. Memorial remembrances to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the St. Catharines General Hospital Oncology Clinic.
