GOULD, Clifford Bruce
97, Harbourville, Kings Co., passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Evergreen Home For Special Care, Kentville. Born in Garland, Kings Co., he was a son of the late Samuel and Stella (Hiltz) Gould. Clifford owned and operated his own mixed farm in Harbourville all of his life and had worked for the Department of Highways. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy V. (Dodge) Gould; daughters, Cynthia Boliver, Brooklyn Corner, Kings Co.; Pansy Gould, Coldbrook, Kings Co.; grandchildren, Janet Gould-Wagstaff, Steven Gould-Wagstaff, both of Alberta; Cpl. Corey Boudreau, Oromocto, N.B.; Connie Schofield, Wolfville; sisters, Grace Bezanson, Garland; Reta Rafuse, Auburn; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Boyd C. Gould; brothers, Carl and Archibald Gould; sisters, Nina Dodge and Cassie Daniels. Visitation for Clifford will take place Thursday from 1-1:30 p.m., followed by the funeral service 2 p.m., Thursday, April 16, both in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). Pastor Tim Bigelow officiating, with burial in Burlington Cemetery. FOUGERE (DeCoste), Mary Frances, R.N.
86, of Creignish, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in Mulgrave, Mary was a daughter of the late William and Mary (Levangie) DeCoste. Mary was a graduate of St. Martha's School of Nursing in 1945, and a member of Stella Maris Parish, Creignish. She was a high class hostess, always proper, compared many times to Queen Elizabeth. She was an avid bingo player and slot machine fanatic. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Simon; daughter, Simone (Ron) Appleton; sons, John (Lorraine) and Blaise (Carol); brother, Ambrose (Vi); grandchildren, David, Denise (Richard), Shaun (Loren), Jeffrey, Jenna (Aaron) and Renee; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Lauren, also numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Bert and Curtis and sister, Maureen. Visitation will take place today from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m. in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Creignish with Father Hughie D. MacDonald officiating. Burial at a later date. HARTLING, Vera Margaret
82, Halifax, passed away April 9, 2009, in Parkstone Enhanced Care. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Stephen Ralph and Hazel (Gammon) Shears. She was a bookkeeper many years ago for Sears. Vera was a lifelong member of St. John's, St. Peters, Birch Cove, and lastly St. Paul's Anglican Churches. She was an avid reader and gardener, but most of all Vera was a dedicated homemaker who loved to cook, play and practice on her piano, and family gatherings. Surviving are sons, Patrick (Pamela) Hartling, Halifax; Philip (Kathy) Hartling, Ontario; granddaughters, Julia and Olivia Hartling; sister, Sheila, Newfoundland and brothers, Ralph and Robert. She was predeceased by her husband, James Patrick Hartling. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, in St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1749 Argyle St., Halifax, Rev. Dr. Paul Freisen officiating. Interment in St. James Cemetery, Port Dufferin. Entered into rest suddenly in the Ottawa General Hospital on Saturday, April 10, 2009, at the age of 65 years. Beloved wife of Richard James Lake; cherished mother of the late David Lake, Christine Decoff (Ron), William "Bill" Lake (Nicola), Michael Lake, Richard Lake (Donna) and Joseph Sebastian Lake (Danielle); loving grandmother of Ayla, Camden, Tylor, Travis, Christopher, Stephen, Timothy, David, and Elizabeth. Also survived by two great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeannie, Ginger and Cathy; brother, George and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Doris Shea; infant sister, Elizabeth and by her son-in-law, Roger Elliott. Family and friends may pay their respects at Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James St. East, Brockville, Ont., today from 11a.m. until 1 p.m. when a service in celebration of Barbara's life will be held in the chapel. STRACHAN, Walter George Sr.
90, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully Monday, April 13, 2009, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool, he was a son of the late Stephen and Maude (MacLeod) Strachan. Before serving in the Second World War overseas, Walter was a Merchant Marine. Following the war he was employed with Bowater Mersey Paper Company up until his retirement. Walter loved his cat, Susie and the Blue Jays. Walter is survived by his son, Walter Jr. (June) and their children, Adam and Blake; his daughter, Lillian (Brian) Cunningham and their children, Ford and Alexis; sister, Jean Oickle; nieces, Joyce MacLeod, Margaret Rice, Shirley Goodine and nephew, Harris. He was predeceased by son, Randy; brothers, Osborne, Jack, Clarence, and Harris; and sisters, Vera, Marge, and Dorothy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 16, from 7-9 p.m with a Legion Service starting at 7 p.m. A Celebration of Walter's Life will be held Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m., both from Chandlers' Funeral Home, Rev. FORGERON, Verena
93, Sydney, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, April 11, 2009, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in West Arichat, Verena was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (MacNamara) Dorey. She left her mark through many "good works", by generously giving her time to the church and community in Halifax, Sydney and West Arichat, and as a long-time volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross. Verena always had a special fondness for those who needed extra time, attention or sense of family. She gave her love and attention generously, and was rewarded with the devotion of her children and grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed time spent with family, sharing a joke and her hearty laugh, or preparing one of her famous recipes. Knitting was undoubtedly her favorite hobby, and each of us has been the proud recipient of her treasures. She is survived by her children, Ronald (Frances), Ann (Kevin) Cosgrove, Karen (Edward) MacMaster, Helen (David) Crane; grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Crane, Angela and Keith MacMaster, Kathryn (John Cipryk) and Kevin E. Cosgrove, Celeste and Gregory (Rachelle) Forgeron; great-grandchildren, Adelle Verena and Simon Alexander; half-sister, Eileen Baker Dartmouth; several loving nieces, nephews and caring friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Forgeron; brothers, Albert, Wallace, Hycinth and twin brother in infancy, Leon; as well as half-sisters, Dorothy LeBlanc (West Arichat), and Marie Landry (Louisdale). Visitation will take place in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St. on Wednesday, April 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River on Thursday, April 16, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Will MacPherson officiating. Special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt and his team; Dr. Frances D'Intino of the Palliative Care Unit and nepthrologist, Dr. Siva Thanamayooran. The daughter of the late Josef and Emma Maria Schrage, she is survived by daughters, Elaine (David), Shirley; son, Ronald; grandchildren, Raylene, Ricardo, Lynn, Ian, Derek; great-grandsons, Dalton, Corbin, Dylan; stepgranddaughters, Tracy, Rhonda; many nieces, nephews. Predeceased by husband, Clement; brothers, Gustove, Josef, William, Bernhard. No visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home. Funeral April 16, 2 p.m., Calvin United Church. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, with luncheon in Calvin Hall.
MacCORMAC, John Daniel Chrysostom
John's death occurred suddenly on March 17, 2009, in Costa Rica, at age 64. John resided in Terrace, B.C. and is survived by his loving family: wife, Diane; sons, Daniel, Dylan and Iaian (Kris), and granddaughter, Piper. John will be sadly missed by his beloved mother, Mary; sisters, Gwen Watson (John); Helen, Gerarda Golding (Bill); brothers, Jerry (Lorraine), Billy (Marlene) and Ronnie (Penny), and uncle, Joe MacAulay; nieces, nephews and many cousins. John was a kind and generous man who was very active in the labour movement and a staunch believer in social justice. He was predeceased by his father, John, and sister, Joan (John O'Hara). There will be a memorial mass to celebrate John's life in St. Anthony's Church, Courtney Rd., Dartmouth, Saturday April 18, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall.
RUSHTON (Hussey), Mary "Frances"
70, Stellarton, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2009, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Sydney, May 26, 1938, Frances was a daughter of the late Norman and Florence (Burke) Hussey. Frances attended Holy Angels High School in Sydney and was a graduate of Teachers College in Truro in 1956. She taught school in Sydney and also in Halifax. On August 10, 1959, Frances married the love of her life, Darrell Rushton, and began to raise her family. They lived in Halifax for 11 years before moving to New Glasgow and later Stellarton. Frances volunteered as a Beaver Leader and for Meals on Wheels. She was an accomplished piano player and a talented artist. Frances's greatest joy in her life was her family. Nothing pleased her more than spending time with her husband, their four children and their families. She always had pictures to show and stories to share about her nine grandchildren who she loved so very much. Over the years, Frances and Darrell enjoyed many trips together, including Australia, Hawaii, Europe, Alaska and several cruises. They travelled across Canada and the US in their motor home. They were members of the FMCA motor home association and enjoyed many weekend camping trips with them. In recent years Frances loved to go to their summer-home in Cape Breton. Frances was so happy at the cottage and she named it Birchaven. Frances will be fondly remembered for the deep love she had for her family. She was a kind and gentle spirit. In her quiet, caring and unassuming way, Frances was a blessing to her family. She was a member of St. George's Anglican Church. Frances is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 49 years, Darrell Rushton, formerly of Truro; son, Michael (Shirley) Rushton, Hamilton, Ont. and their children Moira, Aileen, Mitchell and Emily; son, Ronald (Susanna) Rushton, Truro, and their children Nicole and Hannah; daughter, Darlene (Bob) McIsaac, Kentville, and their children Kyla, Marissa and Kieran; son, Stephen Rushton, Halifax. Frances is also survived by her brother, Albert (Suzanne) Hussey, Sydney; sister, Dianne (Ernie) DiLabio, Ottawa; brother-in-law, Hans Weber, Sydney Forks. She was predeceased by her sister, Carol Weber. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, April 15, 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. in H. W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral will be held in 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in St. George's Anglican Church, Temperance Street, New Glasgow, with Rev. Elliott Siteman officiating. Internment will take place in Brookside Cemetery. There will be a time of fellowship in the church hall following the funeral service. Memorials may be made to St. George's Anglican Church or Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Society.
DERGAL (Joseph), Julie
66, passed away peacefully in the hospital on Thursday, April 9, 2009, with her beloved daughter by her side. Born and raised in Kentville, she was the only daughter of the late Charles and Lillian Joseph. She was predeceased by her brother, Freeman Joseph. Julie was the mother and best friend of her daughter, Julie (Paul) Serafini, Toronto, Ont. "Sittee" will be deeply missed and forever loved by her grandchildren, Sebastiano and Angelica. She is also survived by her brother, Anthony (Pam) Joseph, of Halifax; nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. She was a graduate of Mount St. Vincent University, and dedicated 25 years of her life to working at Dalhousie Law School. Jewel was a character. She definitely had a way with words, and could make anyone laugh regardless of the situation. Julie was a very unique woman with a generous soul. She faced life's challenges with perseverance, determination and acceptance. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Julie was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all. Visitation will take place in J.A. Snow Funeral Home on Thursday, April 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Friday in St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 10 a.m., with a reception to follow. ENGLAND, Albert A. "Teddy"
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, and grampy on April 11, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Steep Creek, Guysborough Co., on June 22, 1936, he was a son of the late Howard and Jessie (Cummings) England. A stationary engineer by trade, he began his working years at Acadia Fisheries in Mulgrave. Over the years he also worked in the construction industry. Following an industrial accident in 1980, Dad was left disabled by severe injuries to his lungs. He faced his on-going health issues with strength, courage and determination. Dad enjoyed playing cards, watching wrestling, walking, catching up on the news with family and friends and weekend calls from Sandy. He loved looking at new cars and was so happy when he bought a new one only three weeks ago. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen (Clancy); sons, Sandy (Kathleen), Calgary, Alta.; Howard; and daughter, Wendy (Craig) Michaud, both of Bedford; cherished granddaughters, Paige "Boo-Boo" and Lauren "Lulu". They provided Dad with his happiest moments and always made their Grampy proud. Dad is also survived by brothers, Howard, Mulgrave; Earl, Port Hastings; Preston, Steep Creek; Edward, Melford; Ralph, Mulgrave; and Sandy, Steep Creek; sisters, Geraldine Parks, Steep Creek; Lorna Josey, Halifax; and Calestine, Steep Creek. In addition to his parents, Dad was predeceased by his sister, Rena Boyle. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. The funeral service will be held on Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrews Anglican Church, Mulgrave, with Rev. Susan Best officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Anglican Church, St. Andrew's Anglican Church or Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Cremation has taken place and burial will be in the old St. James Cemetery in Melford. The funeral is under the direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury. The family would like to thank Dr. Elena Swift for her exceptional care and efforts on Dad's behalf. We would also like to thank the hard-working doctors and nurses of the Emergency Department and 3 East at Dartmouth General Hospital, especially Dr. MacLennan, Dr. Alzrighe, and nurses Jane and Maureen. DAVIES, B. Carlton
87, of New Minas, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Hantsport, he was a son of the late James and Ola (Lockhart) Davies. He was a mechanic by trade and in his earlier years repaired farm tractors. Later in life he was employed with Irving Oil, where he worked at maintenance on their trucks. He was an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Mildred Madeline King; son, Bernie (Charlene), Black River; sister, Moyra Foster, Ottawa, Ont.; brothers, Harry (Audrey), Wolfville and Wilmer, Hantsport; grandchildren, Justin Davies (Amy Dimock) and Carla (Andrew) Guthro, both of Black River; great-granddaughter, Abby Davies; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Deanna June. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today and where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, Rev. Robert Billings officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Family flowers only, by request.
