Eileen Anne WITHERS (Traynor)
1946-2008
Withers (nee Traynor), Eileen Anne - It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eileen Withers, after a short and courageous battle with lung cancer. She died peacefully with her husband and two children by her side in the Palliative Care Unit at the VG Site QEII in Halifax, at the age of 61.
A woman whose journey through life blended several families in many locations, including homes in Scotland, England, Gatineau in Quebec, Ottawa, Halifax, Toronto and finally retirement in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
Daughter of proud parents Harry Traynor and Katherine (nee Gill) of Halifax. Beloved wife and best friend of Thomas (Ted) Withers. Cherished mother of Sarah (Keith Bennett, Toronto) and Adam Mahoney (Kendra Hurshman, Windsor). Dear step-mother of Rob Mahoney (Tracey Sliter, Ottawa), Paul Withers (Judy Myrden, Halifax) and Carolyn (Andy Heard, Salt Spring Island, BC). Precious sister of Ian (Ottawa) and Gordon (Halifax), she was predeceased by her sister Christine (Bryan Unsworth, York). Eileen will be sadly missed by her extended family and friends in the UK, the US and throughout Canada.
Born in Greenock, Scotland, her family moved to England before she started school. An avid sportswoman and student, tennis and grass-hockey were balanced by studying mathematics and chemistry, eventually completing an honours degree in Economics at the University of London. In 1968, shortly after arriving in Canada, she realized that her French skills, learned England, were not sufficient so she enrolled in a French ski school. That way, she could learn to ski and speak French at the same time. Her strong work ethic and commitment to efficiency helped propel her into senior policy roles in several federal government departments, and trade negotiator for ITC. Eileen was truly a remarkable and multifaceted woman whose interests included her pets, wine making and antiques. Always fond of puzzles and games, the complexity of duplicate bridge enchanted her and she was a Life Master, and certified as both a director and teacher. She also judged and coached competitive debating teams. A collector by nature she attended estate auctions most weekends. Travel often centred around a theme, first bridge tournaments, then ‘collecting’ state capital domes in the US, and finally, viewing paintings by Vermeer in museums around the world. Her love of art was shared with Ted and they took art history classes together at NSCAD. In recent years, her generosity led her to volunteer with seniors at the Windsor Elms, especially in the Palliative Care Unit. An active member of her church, she was a Eucharistic Minister.

A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King St., Windsor, with Rev. Father J.J. MacDonald officiating. A reception will be held in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 5826 South St., Halifax, NS B3H 1S6 or your local SPCA Animal Shelter.
She met each challenge in her path with grace and wisdom and it was the gift of herself that she gave to others.
Ronald Edward “Ron” DEARMER
1924-2008
DEARMER, Ronald Edward “Ron” - 83, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, on Friday, June 27, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after fighting a battle with cancer. Born on August 17, 1924 in Blockley, England, he was the son of the late Ernest and Grace (Butler) Dearmer. Ron and his late wife, Kitty (Rendell) along with their two sons, immigrated to Canada in 1966. Ron’s passion was painting, which gave him great pleasure. He was a member of the Shriners and the Philae Temple and a long- time member of the Masonic Lodge including the Welsford Lodge No. 26, A.F. & A.M., of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia and Past Master of Lyn Lodge No. 416, A.F. & A.M. of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the province of Ontario. He was also a member of the Hiram Chapter No. 3 of the Royal Arch Masons. Ron is survived by and will be sadly missed by sons, Stephen (Velma), Etobicoke, Ont.; Keith (Ellie), Whitby, Ont; brother, Victor (Anne), New Zealand; sister, Lorna, Oshawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Wade, Kimberly, Jessica and Shawn; two great-grandchildren. Ethel Elizabeth PARKER

PARKER, Ethel Elizabeth - 87, South Rawdon, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Centre Rawdon, she was the daughter of the late Alvah and Vera (Fenton) Campbell. Ethel was a graduate of nursing at the Victoria General Hospital. She worked in Windsor at the V.O.N., Payzant Memorial Hospital and Hants Community Hospital, retiring in 1985. Ethel was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Centre Rawdon. She is survived by her husband, Anthony; sons, Earle, South Rawdon; Lee (Darlene), Hilsvale; and David (Anne) Cap Rouge, Quebec; grandchildren, Terry, Annette, Tracy, Michael, Amy, and Emilie; and six great grandchildren; brother, Willard (Jean), Greenfield. She was predeceased by brothers, Carl, Claude, Perry and Earle. BAXTER (Harvie), Marguerite Ellen - The family of Marguerite Ellen (Harvie) Baxter wish to announce her passing on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, in Windsor Elms Village, Windsor. Born to Sylvanus Harvie and Mary Ellen (White) (Findlay) Harvie at (North Noel Road, Hants Co.) on September 22, 1915, Marguerite lived for many years in Wentworth Creek and later with her daughter Gloria and John in Falmouth. She was a member of the UCW in Windsor for many years and her hand knit items for their annual fundraisers were always in demand. Marguerite is survived by daughters, Gloria (John) Lyon, Falmouth; Sharon (Kenneth) Gartland, Windsor; Deborah (Arthur) Stevens, Chester Basin; special niece who was like a daughter, June (Robert) McLellan, Bible Hill; son, Wilfred (Anneliese), Woodville, Kings Co; also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank; sisters, Essie White, Florence Turple, Lorena Underwood; brothers, Archie, Freeman and Lester. The family wish to thank the very kind staff at Windsor Elms Village for the wonderful care our mother received while a resident there. BROWN, Enid Arlene - 92, Martock, Hants Co., passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Falkland Ridge, Annapolis Co., she was the daughter of the late Percy and Elva (Stoddart) Starratt. Enid spent her working life as a school teacher. She was a member of the Martock & Windsor Forks Woman’s Institute as well as a member of the Vaughan’s United Church. She is survived by her daughter, Anne (Earl) Lyon, Middle Stewiacke; Gail Keddy, Truro (her sons, George and John); sons, Malcolm (Jean), Martock (their daughters, Beth (Kenneth), Upper Vaughans and Mandy, Rothesay, N.B.); Walter (Dawn), Sussex, N.B. (their children, Aaron and Lila); as well as great-grandchildren, Kevin, Jessica and Briana; sisters, Hazel Starratt; Ethel Veinotte; brothers, Lawrence Starratt; George (Peggy) Starratt. GESNER (Hillman), Eileen Alice Theresa - 88, Hillsvale, Hants Co., passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008, in Scotia Nursing Home, Beaverbank. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late William and Philomena (McGrath) Hillman. Eileen enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband in their trailer and belonged to Wally Byam Caravan Club. A favourite destination was Smith’s Cove RV Park, where many summers were spent collecting shells on the shore. She was a talented artist who had a passion for knitting, quilting, crocheting and oil painting. Eileen had a great sense of humour and shared wonderful conversations with everyone she met. Eileen’s favourite pastime was simply taking a car drive and didn’t care where she went, “as long as she was going.” She is survived by her husband, Clifford Gesner, Hillsvale; daughters, Sylvia (Fred) Russell, Admiral Rock, and Dianne (Garnet) Benedict, Windsor Forks; sons, Clifford, Toronto, Ont.; D. Wayne (Debbie), Three Mile Plains, and Stephen (Kendra), Hillsvale; sister, Marie (Bob) O’Keefe, Windsor; and 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by grandson, Paul. Violet May HAUGEN
1919-2008
HAUGEN, Violet May - Age 89, who lived in the Windsor area most of her adult life passed away suddenly and peacefully on Monday, October 27, 2008, in the Meadows Long Term Care Centre, Ancaster, Ont. Violet was born on Second Peninsula, Lunenburg Co., on September 1, 1919, a daughter of the late Edwin and Hilda Young. She was a member of the United Church in Windsor and taught Sunday School in earlier years. Later Violet taught a handicapped class (T.M.R.) in the Windsor area for 16 years, an occupation which she very much enjoyed. She was a member of several organizations - the Heart Fund, Gliders, Red Cross, Garden Club, Mount Denson; Retired Teachers Association, Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary, United Church Woman’s Group and Hospital Gift Shop. She was also a volunteer at Dykeland Lodge and Windsor Elms. Violet is survived by her son, Harold; his wife, Brenda, and grandchildren, Eric and Carl, all in Ontario. She was predeceased by two brothers in infancy, brother, Edwin Jr., and sister, Marjorie, as well as by her first husband, Private Harry Schnare; and second husband, Arne. Violet enjoyed the outdoors and all the things of nature, and spent many seemingly tireless hours in her flower and vegetable gardens throughout the years. She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. Kenneth Wallace DANIELS
1930-2008
DANIELS, Kenneth Wallace - 78, Windsor Forks, Hants Co., passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Windsor Forks, he was a son of the late Wallace and Susie (Burns) Daniels.
Kenneth attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, and owned and operated commercial greenhouses for many years. In 1970 he became a stationary engineering instructor at the Annapolis Vocational School, Middleton, where he taught for six years. He then joined the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, from where he retired in 1991 as Chief Inspector/Examiner for the Province. During his tenure with the Department, he participated in the Canada-wide standardization of Stationary Engineering certification. Kenneth was an active member of Windsor United Church. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Kenneth was a skilled craftsman with a real love for woodworking, and made several violins and a cello. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, the former Leota M. Fraser; daughters, Linda Harris (Robert Bennett), Martock; Barbara Daniels-Lake (David Lake), Windsor Forks; Caroll (Michael O.) Chute, Brooklyn; son, Michael (Lana) Daniels, Slave Lake, Alta.; grandchildren, Julie Harris, Daniel and Vanessa Lake, Marc, Sean, and Regan Daniels; brother, Elliott (Jean) Daniels, Windsor Forks; sister, Elizabeth Miller, New Minas; as well as several nieces and nephews.

THERIAULT, Joseph Albert Normand “Terry” - 77, Kempt Shore, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Saturday, December 20, 2008, from congestive heart failure in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with his loving wife of 15 years, Arvilla, by his side.
Joseph was born in Dartmouth, but his love of adventure took him many places in the world. He lived all over Western Canada and the Northwest Territories working as a long haul trucker, driller and retiring as a supervisor for Imperial Oil. While in Australia, Joseph lived on a sailboat and realized his dream of sailing to all the ports visited by Trekka. He finally chose to return to his roots in rural Nova Scotia. Grandpa Joe, Uncle Terry, Uncle Normand will be remembered with the phrase “That reminds me of a story ...”.
Joseph is survived by daughter, Debi (Bill) and son, Rob (Kathy), Calgary, Alta. Grandpa Joe will be missed by grandchildren, Chelsea and Simone, Vancouver, B.C. and Gary and Karl, Calgary. He is survived by sister, Elmina Rose (Richard), Sackville; brother, Gerald Theriault (Sue), Kempt Shore, and stepbrother, Clinton Barkhouse (Lisette), Brantford, Ont., as well as numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Vicki; parents, Albert and Verna; stepsister, Eva Skaling, and step-brothers, George and Charles Barkhouse.
The family would like to thank the nurses on Unit 200, Dr. Smith and, in particular, Beverly Amos and Jocelyn Sanford for the care they provided to Joseph.
At his request, Joseph will be cremated and his ashes will be sent out to sea.

PELLEY, Roy Jerome - 84, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born July 2, 1924, in Sunnyville, Guysborough Co., he was a son of the late Thomas and Louise (Pelly) Pelly. Roy was a veteran of the Second World War and worked at the Windsor Jail for many years. He and his late wife Greta enjoyed going for drives in the car. Roy is survived by his sister, Evelyn Whan, Barrie, Ont., and also nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, the former Greta Edna Coffill; his twin brother, Rob, also brother, Earnest and stepbrother, Robert Pelly. PEPPERDENE (Weare), Tanya Dawn - 41, Ellershouse, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Wednesday, December 10, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Doris (Collings) Weare. Tanya grew up in Dartmouth, where she met the love of her life Dave Pepperdene. Together they had three beautiful children.
Tanya is survived by husband, Dave Pepperdene; children, Brittany (19) (Mike LeGoffic), Chelsey (16), and Danielle (12), all of Ellershouse; siblings, Donna (Ken) Walsh, Dartmouth; Cindy (Mike) Bull, Victoria, B.C.; Cordell (Colette) Weare, Dartmouth; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

CLARKE, Daisy Elizabeth - 72, Windsor, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2007, in Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home. Born in Newport, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Susan Robinson.
Daisy was a loving mother who will be sadly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Lynn and stepdaughters, Tina Marr, Brenda Clarke and Susan Clarke; several grandchildren; sister, Vera Reid, B.C.; brother, Harley Robinson, Ontario. Daisy was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; stepdaughter, Ursula Norris; sister, Doris Pinch; brothers, Doug and Roy Robinson.
