Richard J. "Rick" Surette
1954-2010

SURETTE, Richard J. “Rick” - 55, Dartmouth. It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden death of Rick Surette on Wednesday, June 15, 2010. Rick was the son of the late James and Goldie (Hines) Surette. He is survived by his brothers, Roger (Mary) and Dennis (Kim); nieces, Kelly and Jillian, nephews, Chris and David, as well as grand niece, Hannah. Rick graduated from the Nova Scotia Land Survey Institute in 1974. He proudly practised his trade for over 30 years. His work took him to several places in Canada, including Port Hawkesbury, New Glasgow, Calgary and finally returning to Dartmouth in 2002. Rick was a true sports fan, enjoying university hockey and basketball, Nova Scotia Senior Baseball and the local MASCAR and Harness Racing circuits. His true love was the New York Yankees, Arnold Palmer and Henri Richard. Rick enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting often and had a true interest in the lives of his nieces and nephews. One of his favourite passions was to take long drives in his car, and it was thought that he knew every back road in the province. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 17. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 18 in Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Interment will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, followed by a reception in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rick may be made to Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Frederick St., Suite 400, Kitchener, ON N2H 2M2 (1-800-998-7398).

Antony L. Sanderson
1959-2010

SANDERSON, Antony Lee "Tony" — 50, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born September 17, 1959, he was a son of Ada (Sibbley) Hughes and adopted parents, the late John and Audrey (Sandford) Sanderson. Tony enjoyed spending time fishing. He is survived by sisters, Gladys Sandford, Marilyn Barker, Grace (John) Oickle, Mabel Penny and Rosemary Hughes; brothers, Allan Hughes, Wilfred Hughes, Kenny Hughes and Garnet Hughes; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 27. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, June 28 in Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Garnet Parker officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Eugene R. Smith
1928-2010

Smith, Eugene Randolph - 82, of Halifax, passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary Site, QEII, Sunday, June 27, 2010. Born in Upper Falmouth, he was a son of the late Frederick and Ruby (Hart) Smith.

Eugene was in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 25 years and then went on to be Head Superintendant for Centennial Management, Halifax for 10 years before retiring.

He is survived by daughters, Marjorie Waye and Marlene Smith; granddaughters, Tanya and Tammy; three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; sister, Helen (Donald) Bauchman; foster sisters, Inez, Gail and Bonnie; foster brother, Warren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A committal will take place 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30 in Maplewood Cemetery, 1186 King St., Windsor, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Alice F. Stone
1929-2010

STONE, Alice Frances - 80, Windsor, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ada (Gallop) Turner.

She is survived by her only sister, Cheryl (Fred) Lewis, Sydney; nephews, Kirby (Jecca) Lewis, Dartmouth; and their children, Kaleb and Sydney; Dana (Laura) Lewis, Sydney; and their children, Aden and Rachael; Corey (Cheryl) Lewis, Sydney; and their child, Riley; as well as special friends, Karen and Eric Stephens, Windsor. Alice was predeceased by her first husband, James Van Cosman; second husband, Albert Stone; infant daughter, Janice Frances; and her special dog, “Scratch”.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A committal will take place 2 p.m., Monday, July 12 in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 1510 Grand Lake Rd., Sydney, Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Irving W. Smith
1928-2010

SMITH, Irving Wilson - 81, Mount Denson, Hants Co., died Wednesday, June 30 2010, at home, five days before his 82nd birthday. He farmed the family's century farm "Chestnut Square." He was the fourth generation of Smiths to work this farm, settled by Acadians and bought by the Smith family in 1822. He was an avid outdoorsman that loved to hunt and fish. He had a keen sense of community and family history that dated back many generations. He was predeceased by his mother, the former Mary K. (Scott) Smith (Windsor) and father, Alfred D. Smith; brothers, Alyne D. Smith, Toronto, Ont.; James P. Smith, Mount Denson; his extended family; his common-law partner, Rebecca G. Zwicker. Left to mourn his passing are his nephews (son of James) Gregory J. (Sherry) Ben Jackson Road, Lockhartville; Andrew D. (Maggie) Mount Denson; Jason E. (Michelle) Bog Road, Falmouth; from his extended family Lisa C. (James) Levy, Windsor; Timothy G. Zwicker, Toronto, Ont.; common-law grandchildren, Jeremy and Veronica; great-nephews, Michael, Austin, Kyle and Nathan; great-niece, Michelle. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). Burial will be in Mount Denson Cemetery, Rev. Bill Gibson will conduct a graveside service Saturday, July 10, at 4 p.m.

Albert L. Kelley
1931-2010

KELLEY, Albert Lewis - 78, Leminster, Hants Co., passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Three Mile Plains, he was the son of the late Norris and Ethel (Leighton) Kelley.

Albert worked for 47 years at Fundy Gypsum as a heavy equipment operator. He is survived by his common-law wife, Anna Wile; son, Kevin (Betty) Kelley, Ashdale; step-sons, John (Betty) Wile, Tabor, AB; Thor (Carole) Wile, Moose Jaw, SK and Terry (Paula) Wile, Leminster; daughters, Diane Brown, Red Deer, AB; Wanda (Andrew) Harvey, Ardoise; step-daughters, Marg Wile, Leminster; Wendy Levy, New Ross; sisters, Ann Church, Falmouth and Marion Pick, West Gore; brother, Peter (Connie) Kelley, Windsor; 17 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Albert was predeceased by step-son, Cyril Wile; sisters, Lillian, Sadie, Alfreda, Clarissa and Alice; brothers, Ralph, William, Charlie, Alfred, Aubrey, Cyril and Harley; step-grandchildren, Tracey and Bryant.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There will be no visitation by family request. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, in Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Dennis Leamont officiating. Mabel E. MacDonnell
1924-2010

MACDONNELL, Mabel Elizabeth (Smith) - of Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully two days following her 86th birthday, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late George and Frances (Perks) Smith.

Mabel worked at the Textiles Mill for about 10 years and then she decided to look after her grandchildren while she worked at home as a homemaker. She was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church as well as the Catholic Woman’s League. Mabel liked to read and walking with her sister, Ruth. She enjoyed going to the movies, knitting and making quilt squares that were donated to the QEII Hospital to make quilts for the sick. She was a strong, selfless woman who had a zest for life and always put others before herself.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Hunter (Jim Davis), Deborah (Gerald) Benedict, Heather MacDonnell (Dennis Chaplin) and Paula Parker; son, Harold (Nancy) MacDonnell; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Redden and Marie Evans. Mabel was predeceased by her husband, Harold; six sisters and four brothers.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 20, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King St., Windsor, with Rev. Father Michael Walsh officiating. Burial will be held in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Wiley Ave., Windsor, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Ruby L. Sanford
1920-2010

SANFORD, Ruby Lillian — 90, of Brooklyn, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Brooklyn, on January 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Helen (Fader) Cunningham. Ruby was a life long and honourary member of St. James Anglican Church, a former Sunday School teacher, Altar Guild member, envelope secretary and ACW secretary. She belonged to the Newport Jolly Seniors and enjoyed her bus trips when she was able to go.

Ruby is survived by daughters, Charlotte (Wendell) Worr, Newport Corner; Marilyn Coolen, Fox Point; grandchildren, Alison Worr (Robin Allen), Kathryn (Danny) Phillips, Janine (Jeff) Andersen, Dr. Brian (Lynnette Allan) Coolen and Nicole (Alex) Coulstring. She adored her great-grandchildren, Jenna Brooks, Drew and Kyle Phillips, Justin and Ryley Andersen, Elizabeth and Nikolas Coolen, Logan and Dylan Coulstring. She is also survived by her sister, Frances Scott and a half sister and two half brothers. Ruby was predeceased by her husband Carl; sister, Doris Staples; brother, Arthur and son-in-law, Blair Coolen.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors Friday, July 23, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, in St. James Anglican Church, Etter Rd., Brooklyn, with Rev. Everett Hill officiating. Interment will be held in St. James Anglican Parish Cemetery, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Family flowers only, by request. Patricia G. Burbidge
1937-2010

BURBIDGE, Patricia Gail - 73, Windsor, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Windsor, she was the daughter of the late William and Carrie (Bartlett) Garland. Patricia and her cousin Rae enjoyed quilting with the Newport Corner Ladies Aid. Patricia is survived by her husband of 35 years, Glendon T. Burbidge; sons, Mark Foley, Windsor; and Cameron (Diane) Foley, Wainwright, Alberta; daughters, Jaye (Rick) Bacon, Calgary, Alberta; and Romi Foley (Max Rastelli), Upper Hammonds Plains; sister, Faye (Ron) Brothers, Winnipeg, Manitoba; brothers, Doug (Carol) Garland, Coldbrook; Darrell (Elaine) Garland, Westville; Stephen (Cathy) Garland, Coldbrook; grandchildren, Emily and Sam Bacon, and Codie Rempel. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Kevin Farrell Foley (1996). Lennox H. Coffin
1924-2009

COFFIN, Lennox Hubert - 84, of Beaconsfield, QU, passed away July 2, 2009. Lenn was born December 17, 1924 in Farewell Cove, Gaspe. He was predeceased by his parents, Captain Hubert and Ruby; brothers, Gerald, Ross, and Percy. Lenn was a former Teaching Master at Kings College School in Windsor, NS prior to joining the RCAF in 1943. Following the war and graduation from Queens University, Lenn worked for Canadian International Paper, living in several towns throughout Quebec, retiring in Beaconsfield. He was also General Manager at Anil Canada in East River, NS in the late ‘60s. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Erma (McCann), formerly of Windsor, NS; daughters, Judy Bardon, Mississauga, ON; Pat Collins, Hubley, NS; and Debbie Johns, Beaconsfield, QU; and their families. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor, (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors Monday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of departure for a graveside service at 11:00 am in Maplewood Cemetery, 1186 King St., Windsor, the Rev. Shaun Fryday officiating.

Clyde "Sandy" Horsnell
1944-2010

HORSNELL, Clyde Sands “Sandy”- 66, Falmouth, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, July 29, 2010, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Aylesford, Kings Co., he was the son of the late Wilfred and Isabell (Aylward) Horsnell.

Sandy grew up in Dempsey Corner on his fathers farm. At age 18, while waiting to enter the RCMP, Sandy along with an older friend, took the trip of his lifetime travelling on an old fishing boat from the Bay of Fundy, in the Annapolis Valley, to Florida using just a road map. Sandy entered the RCMP at the age of 19, completing his training for 9 months in Ottawa and being one of the last recruits to train on the RCMP horses, which was a mandatory part of the recruit training at that time. His extensive policing career saw him as an RCMP officer for 27 years and an OPP officer for 6 years. His career included postings in Ottawa, Northwest Territories, Ontario and Nova Scotia (including, Baddeck, New Minas, Antigonish, Windsor and Halifax Customs, as an investigator). During his career Sandy earned his crown pistols and crown rifles badges which he proudly wore. Sandy always said he had a fulfilling career that he would have never changed for anything. He was a member of the Aylesford Lions Club. Sandy was a Mason and member of Harmony Lodge No. 52, Aylesford; Valley Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Middleton; Adoniram Council No. 10, Wolfville; Mount Zion Preceptory No. 73, Kentville; Welsford Lodge No. 26, Windsor and The Hiram Chapter No. 3 of Royal Arch Masons, Windsor. Sandy enjoyed tractor pulling and was known as the “County Mountie” tractor puller. Since retirement, he built six homes which he himself had sewn the logs for. Sandy enjoyed curling (and even had himself an eight ender), golfing and was an avid reader as well as a great story teller. Sandy was a wonderful grampy and poppy and was a devoted family man who will be dearly missed by all the family members.

Surviving are his loving wife, the former, Patricia “Luvy” Clark; son, Shawn Horsnell, Vancouver; step-son, Blair (Christina) Baker, Falmouth; daughter, Aleta-Jo “Muffet” Bird, Indiana; step-daughters, Angie Shanks and Tricia Brown, both of Falmouth; grandchildren, Chip, Chelsea, Madeline, Sophie, Noah, Logan, Sydney and Cameron; brother, Laurie (Joyce) Horsnell, Aylesford; sister, Mary-Louise Rippey, Windsor. Sandy was predeceased by his step-daughter, Tami Tran and brother, Eric Horsnell.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317), where Welsford Lodge No. 26, A.F. & A.M., Windsor, will conduct a Masonic Service at 7 p.m., followed by visitation until 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 1, in Windsor United Church, 613 King St., Windsor, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Private family burial will take place in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, with a reception to follow in the Windsor Curling Club. The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Cathryn Smith, Nurses of Unit 200 and Bev Lyttle of Palliative Care. Donations in memory of Sandy may be made to Palliative Care Unit, c/o Hants Community Hospital or the Hants County VON, 89 Payzant Drive, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0.

Muriel M. Rose
1908-2010

ROSE, Muriel Margaret – 102, Windsor, passed away August 11, 2010 at Windsor Elms Village in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Muriel was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (MacKenzie) Creelman of Princeport, Colchester County.

Muriel is survived by nieces, Marjorie Peppard and Ruth Peppard; as well as special friends, Mabel and Barbara Hines of Windsor; and Trevor, Mary Ann and Abigail Hughes of Falmouth. Besides her parents, Muriel was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Homer Willis Rose; sisters, Murdena and Gracie and brother, Glendon.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). As requested by Muriel, there will be no visitation and a private interment will take place at Fisher Creek Cemetery, Green Oaks, Colchester County on Monday, August 16. Donations in memory of Muriel may be made to Windsor Elms Village, 590 King Street, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 or to a charity of one’s choice.
