Agatha Balfour
1928-2011
Agatha Balfour 82 years of Springhill, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at her residence. She was born in Dalhousie, NB.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Nancy (Mike) Doucet, Suzan Balfour and Sally Balfour, both at home; step sons, Allan and Raymond Balfour; sisters, Shirley Arseneau and Thresa Arseneau; brother, Beniot Arseneau; several grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Hermen Balfour; her parents; brothers, Alfred, Alponse, Clarence and Leonard; sisters, Blanche, Annetta, Corine, Drillida, Geraldine and two children in infancy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361). Visitation will be held 9:30 - 11:00 am Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Funeral Home followed immediately at 11:00 am by a Memorial Service, with Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial in the Don Bosco Cemetery, Dalhousie, NB.

Elda Janette Whyte
1919-2011
Elda Janette Austin Whyte "Mam"- passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at the home of her daughter, Mila, surrounded by her family. She was born October 16, 1919 in "the little house" in Rodney, daughter of the late Fred and Effie (Smith) Austin.
Elda enlisted in CWAC, July 3, 1942, starting Basic Training in St. Anne De Bellevue, Quebec moving on to advanced training in Kitchener, Ontario and posted at RCASC, Citadel Hill, Halifax. In June of 1944 she sailed Overseas on Nieu Amsterdam where she served at # 1, MAC, Farnborough, England. She also served with the British Army Service at Bonington Tank Training Division. She returned to Canada on the Dushess of Bedford, October 1945. She was the first graduate from the School of Nursing Assistants at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax, 1955, where she worked until her retirement in 1977 when she moved to Springhill to be near her grandchildren. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Halifax and Springhill Baptist Church, Springhill.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Mila (David) Surrette, Rodney; grandchildren, John David (Donna), Springhill, James (Lee), Halifax and Megan (Christopher Symonds), Perth, Australia; great grandchildren, Jacob, Abigail, Béa and Noah; sister, Evelyn Ferguson, Springhill; sister in law, Marjorie Austin, Amherst; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank A. Whyte,1994; sister, Eileen; brothers, Elmer and Earl.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) where visitation will be held Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 7 - 9 pm. Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm, Monday, July 11, 2011 from the Funeral Home with Reverend Donnie Miller officiating. Burial in Rodney Cemetery.

Erna Martha Weiss
1919-2011
Erna Martha Weiss, age 91, of Baie Verte and formerly of Redwitz, Germany, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home.
She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Barbara Barczyk, her granddaughter Antje (Fred) Hamilton; grandsons, Arnd (Beth) Barczyk and Alexander (Claudia) Barczyk; and great grandchildren, Lucas, Michaella, Cassandra, Madison, Conrad, Fabian, and Andrea.
She moved to Canada fifteen years ago to join the family after her son-in-laws death. She was a master gardener and helped to create the most beautiful garden at her daughter's home.
Honoring Erna's wishes, cremation has taken place under the care of Jones Funeral Home, Port Elgin, (538-2241). A private family memorial celebration and burial will be held at a later date.

Muriel Elaine Glover
1917-2011
M. Elaine Glover 93 years of Springhill, formerly of Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Murray Harbour, PEI, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at her residence. Born in Springhill she was a daughter of the Late Robert John and Laura (Hall) Davis.
She was a member of St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Springhill and the United Church Women.
She is survived her sister, Helen Bartlett ; nephew Robert, niece Karen; cousins, Donald and Dr. Ralston Ryan, Norma Mills, Jack Ryan and Robbie Mills.
She was predeceased by her husband Cpl. John William Glover.

Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill (902 597 2361 where visitation will be held 2:00 - 2:30 pm on Thursday, July 14, 2011 followed immediately at 2:30 by the Funeral Service, with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Effie Louise (Mitchell) Brown
1931-2011
Effie Louise (Mitchell) Brown 80 years of Springhill, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2011 in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the Late Richard C. and Tina (Vance) Mitchell.
She was educated in the Springhill School system and was a member of St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Springhill and UCW. Effie was a strong, hard working woman,who dedicated her entire life to her home and family. Besides spending time with family and friends, she enjoyed quilting and rug hooking and was an excellent cook.
She will be sadly missed by her husband Winfield H. Brown; sons, Arthur Richard Hall (Virginia) Brown, Williamsdale, Cumb. Co., and H. David (Lena) Brown of Amherst; brothers, John (Angela) Mitchell, Springhill, Jordan "Hookie" (Brenda) Mitchell, Nappan and Kenneth (Peggy) Mitchell, Attleboro, Mass; sisters, Margaret Dow, Maccan and Elizabeth Choisnet, Springhill; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great great grandson; brother in law, Al Bowman, Halifax and sister in law, Mary Ann Mitchell; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Alex in infancy and George "Chick"; sisters, Lois in infancy and Esther; sister in law, Judy Mitchell.

Margaret E. Baker
1914-2011
Margaret Evelyn (Hutchins) Baker, age 97, of Dorchester, passed away peacefully at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 17, 2011.
Born in Liverpool, NS, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Annie (Day) Hutchins.
Following the death of her mother in the great flu epidemic of 1918, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Wright of Liverpool, NS. She attended school in Liverpool until high school, then finished high school at Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, NS. Margaret was a member of Trinity Anglican Church in Dorchester.
Along with her love of home and family, music was her main interest. She was a member of Shepody Chapter IODE since 1948 and held several offices. Bird feeding and bird watching became her joy as she grew less active.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Bruce Hutchins, of Smith's Cove, NS
She leaves to mourn her passing her son James of Rossway Digby County, NS and daughter Shirley Bourque as well as two granddaughters and two grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. Also her cousin Mrs. Helen Jones of Kentville, NS and a nephew the Reverend E. Brian Hutchins and his wife Sandra of Sackville, NS.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (506-364-1300) where visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Trinity Anglican Church, Dorchester on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 3:30 pm, Archdeacon Reginald Stockall, assisted by her nephew Rev. E. Brian Hutchins. Burial will follow in the Dorchester Rural Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Trinity Church, Dorchester or a charity of the donor's choice would be gratefully appreciated by the family.
Irene H. Boudreau
1912-2011
Irene H. Boudreau, 99, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at the Gables Lodge in Amherst with family by her side on Wednesday, July 20, 2011.
Born in Joggins, NS, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Comeau) Boudreau.
Faithful to her church, she worked as housekeeper for St. Peters Parish in Dartmouth and St. Charles Parish in Amherst.
Left to mourn are sisters Eleanor Boudreau, Fredericton and Mildred Terrio, Nappan; brother David, Joggins.
She was predeceased by sisters Mellisa, Pricilla & Gladys Mills and brothers, Edgar, Arthur, Leon and William.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, Main Street, River Hebert (902-251-2877) where visiting hours will take place on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Joggins, on Friday at 11 am, Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Cemetery.
Hazel Perry Garside
1922-2011
The death of Hazel Perry, age 89, of Amherst occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, July 21, 2011.
Born in Amherst she was a daughter of the late Louis and Matilda (Martin) Perry.
Hazel was a veteran of WW II serving with the WACS. Following the war years she was a taxi driver/owner in Montreal for 37 years. After retirement she remained in Montreal for several years, returning to Amherst in 2009.
Hazel will be fondly remembered by a foster brother William Benjamin, Amherst.
She was predeceased by brothers Mickey, Art. George and Jimmy and sisters Annie, Edna and Winnie, Dolly.
In keeping with Hazel's personal request, her remains are being cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst. There are no funeral or memorial services. Her final resting place will be in the Last Post Fund Nova Scotia Branch Veteran's Columbarium, Fairview Cemetery, Halifax.
Morton E. Gilroy
1944-2011
Morton Earl Gilroy, 67, of Truro and formerly of Springhill, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Mira Nursing Home, Truro.
Born in Springhill, he was a son of the Late Floyd and Agnes (Carde) Gilroy.
He was an adherent to St. Andrews Wesley United Church, Springhill, past member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 17 and the Pioneer Street Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, the cottage and camp, family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife the former Mary Gamble; sisters, Elda (Herbert) Austin, Grand Valley, Ontario, Verna Jean (Peter) MacLeod and Rowena (Arthur) Allen both of Springhill; Dianne Wheaton and Jane Terrris of Amherst, Barbara (Murray) Lareaux and Gail (John) Russell both of Mississauga, Ontario; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Angus and Russell; sister, Geraldine and an infant sister Beatrice.

Marguerite Hurley
1913-2011
Hurley, Marguerite; passed away June 3, 2011 in her 97th year.
Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late George and Rebecca (Boone) Watson.
Marg spent most of her life in Amherst except for a 21year period when she maintained a home in Springhill.She is survived by a son, Donald (Barbara) of Dartmouth and three grandchildren, Denise (Stuart) McDonald of Lake Echo, Heather (Doug) Riley of Dartmouth and Donald of Dartmouth. She is also survived by five beautiful great grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Jillian, Kimberley and Jamie McDonald and Kristopher and Melanie Riley and by sisters, Marion Stanley of Amherst and Ruby Gagan of Pleasanton, California.
Besides her parents, Marguerite was predeceased by her husband, James LeRoy, sister Ethel Long and brother Harold Watson. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst. No flowers or visitation by request. A quiet family graveside service will be held to honor her passing. Donations in her memory to the IWK Children's Hospital, Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.

The death of Henry Austin, age 87, of Collingwood, occurred at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax on Tuesday, August 9, 2011.
Born in Collingwood, he was a son of the late Otis and Pearl (Mooring) Austin.
Henry was a retired Bus Driver being known as "The Good Morning Bus Driver" in Hamilton, ON. for 26 years.
Henry will be sadly missed by his wife of 64 years, Jewell (Dobson); a son, Gerald and daughter Joy; 4 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Wilfred and Leo (Marilyn) and a sister Natalie (Robert) West
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the W. Allen Funeral Home, Oxford. There will be no visitation or memorial service.
