WHEELER, Mary "Madeleine"
53, of Mahone Bay, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Sheeves Cove, Port Au Port, N.L., she was a daughter of James and Dorothy (Young) Wheeler, Maitland. Over the years, Madeleine worked as a cook and baker in many restaurants and later worked as a homecare worker in the area. Her love of life, family and friends, and the enjoyment she found riding on Harley's were so important to her. Madeleine's quiet courage, strength of spirit, and sense of humour will be carried forward by those who knew and loved her. Besides her parents, she is survived by daughter, Roxanne Wheeler (Glenn Freeman), Kingston; sisters, Audrey (Austin Green) Wheeler, Stonehurst; Jo-Ann (Douglas) Peveril, Hebbville; brothers, Owen (Lisa), Molega Lake; Leonard (Pearl), Oakhill; Harold (Mona), Oakland; Jacob (Sherry), Mahone Bay; granddaughter, Jazmin Freeman; 11 nieces and nephews; and several cousins. She was predeceased by sister, Maida. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. No. 3, Lunenburg, where a memorial service to celebrate Madeleine's life will be held Sunday at 3 p.m., Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Newfoundland. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Lodge that Gives, Lung Association of Nova Scotia, or to Fabry Society of Canada.
DISBROWE, Peter George "Pete"
Age 47 of Dartmouth, died April 13, 2009, at home. Born in St. Thomas, Ont., he was a son of P. George Sr. and Lynn (Voaden) Disbrowe. Pete would start his morning by driving to Eastern Passage, where he would sit and look out over the water before going to work. He was an avid model builder, fisherman, enjoyed drag racing, cars, paint balling with his son Jake and had a passion for his on-line radio station (www.firebirdnation.com). Peter looked forward to going to the summer cottage in Bobcagyeon, Ont. He very much enjoyed going to car shows and the Quinpool Road cruises with his daughter Shelby. Peter is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Sharon (Bates); daughter, Shelby, Dartmouth; son, Jake, Dartmouth; sister, Katherine (Donald) Patterson, St. Thomas; and nieces, Jennifer and Katelyn. Peter was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. W. Voaden and uncle, Robert Voaden. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 20, in St. James United Church, Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating. Donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife Society. Family flowers only.
MacINTYRE, Vina Elizabeth
Passed away peacefully in Melville Lodge Care Centre in Halifax on April 14, 2009, in her 92nd year. Born in New Waterford, she was the eldest child of the late James Daniel MacNeil and Mary Anne (Marsh) MacNeil Doyle. For many years, Vina was employed as a florist and manager of MacLaughlin's Flower Shop in Antigonish where she enjoyed meeting people and creating floral arrangements. She was also an adept seamstress and taught sewing to adults at night classes. In addition, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, ceramics, and preparing wonderful meals for her family and friends. She was a devoted member of St. Ninian's Parish and an active member of the CWL. In her later years, Vina was confined to her home, under the care of her loving son, Kevin, who predeceased her. During her subsequent residency at Melville Lodge, she enjoyed receiving cards, gifts and well-wishes from her family and her friends in Antigonish. Vina forged lasting friendships throughout her life and will be remembered as a generous and caring person who graciously welcomed both family and friends to her home. Vina is survived by sisters-in-law, Margaret MacIntyre and Georgina MacNeil, Antigonish; Thelma Doyle, New Waterford; brother-in-law, Alex Popaduk, Sydney River; several nieces and nephews; and extended family, Pauline (Don Finlayson) and sons, Paul and Alasdir. Vina was predeceased by her husband, Allister; son, Kevin "Mackie"; sisters, Mary MacDonald, Evelyn Popaduk, Lila Tighe, Marion Leonard; brothers, James and John Doyle. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held on Monday April 20, at 10 a.m. in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish, Rev. Tom MacNeil presiding. Burial of remains in St. Ninian's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Special thanks to the staff of Melville Lodge whose kindness and compassion to Vina are greatly appreciated.
NICKERSON, Phillip Ralph
97, of Nakile Home for Special Care, Glenwood, formerly of Barrington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family April 15, 2009. Born in Barrington June 21, 1911, he was the son of the late George and Etta (Nickerson) Nickerson of Barrington. He served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion Cape Sable Island branch 148 Clark's Harbour. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed canoeing, hunting, fishing, baseball and hockey. He was a Nova Scotia Guide in his early years, and he spent time working on yachts in the United States, and was a log driver. He worked at various occupations throughout his life. He was known affectionately as Pa. He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis (Kirby) Cunningham, Faye (Jim) MacKinnon, both of Centerville; his son Michael (Gloria) of Wellington Yarmouth Co.; grandchildren, Andrew, Stacey, Brain, Lucas; stepgrandchildren, Amber, Ian, Keith, Karen; and 10 step great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mae (King); brothers, William, Earle; sister, Vera. Visitation will be today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in H. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Barrington. Legion service 7 p.m. today. There will be a graveside service Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. in Riverdale Cemetery, Riverhead, with Pastor Wayne Johnson officiating. BENEDICT, Vivian Agnes
91, of Kempt Shore, Hants Co., departed this world suddenly on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Windsor. Vivian was born on December 7, 1917, in Cheverie, Hants Co., and was the daughter of the late Eugene and Matilda (Hill) Crossley. Vivian lived life to the fullest, by sharing it with family and friends. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling and that trend continued on into her golden years, whether it involved a trip across Canada or to the grocery store. Her natural quick wit made her a joy to be around. She was kind hearted in nature and had a natural ability as a mother to be a caretaker to those in need, whether it be family or friends. She loved the summer months, especially spending many hours in her flower garden. Her true love of teddy bears was legendary to those who knew her, and had an entire bedroom devoted to her collection and always took the time to give everyone the grand tour whenever she had the chance. Vivian is survived by her daughters, Vera (Lowell) Ward, Stewiacke; Donna (Al) Ritter, Stoney Plain, Alta.; Valerie (Armando) Reis, Rockwood, Ont.; son, Garnet (Dianne) Benedict, Windsor Forks; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; brother, Murray Crossley, Windsor Elms, and his wife, Jean of Mantua; several nieces and nephews. Besides parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Marshall Benedict (February 25, 1993); son, Earle Benedict; sister, Ida Rose; brother, Fenton Crossley; also by an infant brother, Burton. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor. GOODIE, Anthony Wayne "Tony"
36, Halifax, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 16, 2009. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Dale and Paul Goodie. Affectionately known as Tony, he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered as a fun loving fellow who enjoyed life. He is survived by his treasured children, Dominic Tarbox and Serena Forde; his loving parents, Dale and Paul Goodie, Halifax; brother, Paul Goodie; his half-siblings, Wayne, Blayne, Rhonda, Tracey, Gerard, and Janice; grandmother, Shirley Goodie, Halifax; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Arrangements are under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Halifax (477.5601), where visitation will be held on Monday, April 20, at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m., with Pastor Reg Lewis as clergy. EISNER, Etta Florence
93, of Lawrencetown, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at home. She was born in Young's Cove, to the late Richard and Zaidee (Guest) Sarty. Etta was a member of Lawrencetown United Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for over 30 years, being a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary; convener of the Baptismal Committee, which she found most gratifying, along with many other committees. She was a former Past Noble Grand of Autumn Leaf Rebekah Lodge, Bridgetown, member of Valley Rose Rebekah Lodge, Lawrencetown and a member of the New Horizons Seniors Club. Etta enjoyed painting, crafts, bowling, playing cards and walking, but her passion was creating beautiful flower gardens. Etta was a "people person" and her home was a home away from home to many, over the years to whom she was a mother and friend to all who came. She enjoyed family life with her late husband, Raleigh, to whom she was married 68 years and daughters, Marilyn (Lyman) Huskins, Milton, Queens Co.; Lois (Garry) Lupkoski, Comox, B.C.; Joan (John) Clarke, Pictou Landing; grandchildren, Patricia Isnor, Larry Huskins, Tracy Kerr, Christa Clarke, Selena Lupkoski and Rebecca Martell; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Isnor and Vivian Huskins, and step great-grandchild, Kael Kerr. She was predeceased by her husband, Raleigh Eisner; five sisters and six brothers. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear mother, Margaret M. (Fougere) Knickle, formerly Scallion, of Lunenburg on her 80th year, Thursday, April 16, 2009, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, after a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Port Hawkesbury, she was a daughter of the late William and Mae (LeBlanc) Fougere, Janvrin's Island, Cape Breton. Margaret worked many years as a dietary aid at Fishermen's Memorial Hospital and Harbour View Haven in Lunenburg. Margaret is survived by her children, Douglas F. Scallion (Rachel), Edmonton, Alta; Joseph H. Scallion, New Brunswick; Jacqueline M. Taylor (David), Corbeil, Ont.; Susan T. Kolodij (Ronald), Ottawa, Ont.; Donald A. Scallion (Brenda), Orillia, Ont.; Rosemarie Lesage (Darrell), Winnipeg, Man.; Marjorie A. Scott (Bob Vaughan), Ottawa, Ont.; Dianna C. Francis (Hubert), Lunenburg; Barbara J. Scallion, Calgary, Alta.; Andrew M. Scallion (Lesley), Victoria, B.C. Margaret loved her 25 grandchildren and her 18 great-grandchildren. 70, of Sunken Lake Road, Kings Co., passed away at home, Thursday, April 16, 2009, with his wife by his side. Gerald worked at many jobs during his 70 years. He loved to hunt, fish, travel and go camping. He is survived by his wife, Brenda (McKinley); son, Barry, New Minas; daughter, Judy (Russell Tupper), Sheffield Mills; sister, Pauline Beacauge, Belleville, Ont.; brother, Lawrence (Joyce), Coldbrook; grandson, Shamus Ward; stepson, Scott McKinley, Greenwood; stepdaughter, Lynn-Marie Fulton, New Minas; stepgranddaughters, Katherine and Shania; stepgrandsons, James, Alex, Brandon and Shane; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Kevin Griffin; his mother, Dorothy Strong; his stepfather, Kenneth Ogilvie; sister, Loretta Teed.
