PIERRARD, Hilda "Mae"
77. With heavy hearts and fond memories we are saddened to announce the passing of our mom, nanny and sister. Mom died peacefully in the hospital surrounded by her children on April 20, 2009. Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of Leonard and Irene (Page) Leadbeater. Along with her parents, she will be welcomed into Heaven with open arms by her husband, Sonny and his parents, Lily and Amos Pierrard. Mae will be sadly missed and always remembered by her children, Leonard (Doris), Gary (Trish), Kenny (Cathi) and Wendy (Eddie); grandchildren, Shelley (Richard), James (Kayla), Kyle, Matthew (Cat), Jordan, Taylor and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Abbie, Eric and Khloe; brother, Everett (Muriel) MacKenzie, Marcelle and Margie Pierrard, nieces, nephews, and many friends. A very fond love of animals, she will be missed by her dog, Duke. After growing up and beginning her family with Sonny in New Waterford they moved to Baddeck, where they proudly built a loving home. Mae was a wonderfully talented and creative lady who loved cooking, crafts, and music. We all loved her world famous biscuits and Christmas gallettes that every year made the long trek out west. Nanny's kitchen was a regular gathering point for her children, grandchildren and all of their friends. She loved playing yahtzee, tarbish and cards in general. Mae and Sonny had many happy memories of camping and they traveled in various trailers and buses that they lovingly fixed up together. All of her children and grandchildren were raised with her favorite song, "You Are My Sunshine". Thank you Mom, for all of the wonderful memories that we will take along with us always. You will be sadly missed and never forgotten. Cremation has taken place. Visitation Thursday, April 23, in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck, 3-8 p.m. The funeral will be held Friday, April 24, in Greenwood United Church, Baddeck at 2 p.m. with Rev. Karen Lynch officiating. Burial in Middle River Cemetery. Donations in Mae's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. We would like to say a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Home Care workers and nurses for the special and loving attention they showed Mae.
BURR, Gerald Leslie
The death of Gerald Leslie Burr, 83, of East Mountain occurred peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2009, in the home of his daughter, Rosemary. Born in Wheeler End, England he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1968. He was an instructor at the N.S.A.C. engineering department from 1968 to 1985. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Evelyn; his son, Oliver Burr (Marilyn), East Mountain; daughters, Christine Hooper (Singe), England; Rosemary MacGillivary, Onslow Mountain; all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At his request, his remains were donated to the Dalhousie University School of Medical Science. No funeral or memorial will be held, also at Gerald's request. LEACH, Father George P., S.J.
passed away suddenly in his sleep Easter morning, April 12, 2009, at the age of 71, in Toronto, Ont. On Thursday, April 16, funeral services took place in Toronto and he was buried in the Jesuit Cemetery in Guelph, Ont. He was in his 51st year as a Jesuit and 40th year as a priest. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Darrell (Purtle) Leach. He is survived by his sisters, Anne Pike, London, England; Jane (Bob) Lennox, Moncton, N.B.; and brother, Fred (Theresa) Leach, Windsor; three nephews and three nieces. Having been raised and educated in the Halifax area he entered the Jesuit run St. Mary's University to study Engineering. He was an outstanding athlete in many sports and his football team won many championships. In 2006, he was inducted into the St. Mary's University Athletic Hall of Fame for his athletic prowess during his student days. In 1958, he took his team player and leadership skills to enter the Jesuit Seminary. He earned a Doctorate in Ministry from Regis College in Toronto for his work on the Spiritual Exercises and Native Spirituality. He had many assignments, working with the Native population in Northern Ontario, also serving as parish priest and as director of the Canadian Jesuit Mission Office, now known as Canadian Jesuits International. He was Master of Novices twice during his career. Returning to Halifax he directed the Lay Formation Program for the Archdiocese of Halifax. He worked in Adult Education and Chaplaincy to students of Atlantic School of Theology. He served as Sacramental Minister at Saint Patrick's Parish from 1995 until 2002 and was very involved with refugees and immigrants who arrived in the city. He transferred to Saint Elizabeth Seton as Pastor and in 2003 with the permission of his Provincial he transferred back to Halifax to work with the poor through Hope Cottage. He assisted his good friend, Father Basil Carew at Saint Patrick's. He again became Sacramental Minister until 2009. He also assisted at other parishes when asked. He was the Superior of the Jesuit community in Halifax and Director of the Halifax Jesuit Centre of Spirituality. Since January 1, 2009, he was Superior of the Jesuits at Regis College, Toronto. He was an outstanding pastor, preacher, and spiritual director, and his entire ministry was steeped in the tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Father Leach was involved in many good works; donations and support to those causes would be welcome. In particular, he was deeply committed to Jesuit community life and to the vision and mission of the Society of Jesus. After his first period of working at Saint Patrick's Parish a scholarship for students was established and is given out yearly, Father George Leach S.J. Scholarship, c/o St. Patrick's Parish, 2267 Brunswick St., Halifax NS B3K 2Y9. On Thursday, April 23, memorial services will be held in St. Patrick's Church, 2267 Brunswick St., Halifax. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. which will include a celebration of the Eucharist beginning at 7:45 p.m. with His Grace Archbishop Mancini presiding. A reception in the church hall will follow.
TITCHMARSH, John Hector
80, Lower Sackville, passed away suddenly on April 20, 2009. Born in Brampton, Huntingtonshire, England, on August 10, 1928, to the late Walter and Ida Mae (Binder) Titchmarsh. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Pauline Marie (Mombourquette); sister, Dot Curwen (Nottingham, England); children, Jeanette (MacDonald), Paulette (Carl) Graves, Mark (Dawn), John (Claire), all of Lower Sackville; Robert, Prince George; Doug, Florida; his 13 grandchildren, Willie, Cody (Brandi), Levi, Jay, Cody, Connor, Daniel, Tina (Chris), Bonnie, Pam (Jeff), Cristie (Jamie), Lacey, Jessika (Tommy), and his nine great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy, as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and England. John was predeceased by his son, David; daughter-in-law, Michelle, and son-in-law, Leo. John was devoted to his family, and maintained a close relationship with his sister, Dot with whom he wrote letters, shared pictures, enjoyed phone conversations, and visited when he could. John had many lifelong friends, which included Paul and his fellow Legionnaires, and Sid, a schoolmate from his childhood in England. He often joked and teased all who met him, he loved to give people a hard time and get a laugh. John retired from the Royal Navy (Britain) and the Royal Canadian Navy after 28 years, ran his own business T&T Refrigeration, and then retired from the Nova Scotia Community College. He loved going to his cottage in Upper Musquodoboit every chance he got. He was an active and founding member in the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch in Lower Sackville where he dedicated many hours and years of service. There will be a memorial Service on Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m. in the Legion on Sackville Cross Road with a reception to follow. Family flowers only, donations can be made to the Calais Branch No. 162 of the Canadian Legion or a charity of your choice.
DYER, Fred Alexander
67, Lower Sackville, passed away April 22, 2009, at home. Born in Corner Brook, N.L., he was a son of the late Henry and May Dyer. Fred worked for Canadian National Railway for 38 years. He was an usher in Rock Church. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Lillian; daughter, Katrina (Steven) Hartlen, Lower Sackville; Dwayne (Christa) Dyer, Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Hazel (Dyer) Watters, Beulah (Dyer) MacRury; brother, Gordon Dyer; grandchildren, Alyssa, Logan, Joshua, Hailey and Nathan; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ruby (Dyer) Wong and Evelyn White; brother, George Dyer. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 26, 6-9 p.m. in Rock Church. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in Rock Church. Burial will follow in Oakridge Memory Gardens. Donations may be made to the Rock Church Missions.
VanSLYKE (Chaplin), Norma Mae
The death of Norma (Chaplin) VanSlyke of Fredericton, N.B., occurred in Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on April 23, 2009. She was married for 59 years to the late Arthur VanSlyke. Norma was born in Perth, Ont., in 1926 and was a graduate of Perth Collegiate School. She was employed for a short time in the Wampole office in Perth. When she was married, Norma made her first home in the Gaspe region and she later moved to Fredericton. Norma dedicated most of her life to the care and comfort of her family and others. She was a stay at home Mom who was always there for her husband Arthur and her sons, David and Stephen. Her kitchen was a constant source of wonderful meals and treats and the smell of homemade bread often welcomed the family home in the afternoon. She loved to tend her gardens, play bridge with friends and spend time at the lake. Her back yard was always open for her children and their friends for wide ranging boys' games which often put the gardens at risk. As the children grew, she was increasingly involved in caring for her neighbours through visiting, running errands and providing meals. She enjoyed visits and hearing updates from her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter. Norma attended Brunswick Street Baptist Church where she was a member of the Harriett Clark WMS and the Get-Together Club. She remained active in these groups and was looking forward to hosting an IODE meeting at her new home at Ste. Anne's Court. She is survived by her sons, David (Marsha) of Enfield, and Stephen (Deborah) of Fredericton; her grandchildren, Chris, Greg, Andy (Jorge), Kelly (Jay), Brent, Jeremy and Kristen and great-grandchild, Amber. She is also survived by her sister, Jean of Perth, Ont. She was recently bereaved by her husband, Arthur. Visitation will be held in McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Sunday, April 26, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Greg Geldart officiating. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the church gym. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Brunswick Street Baptist Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
BANFIELD, Mark A.
47, Halifax, died suddenly on April 21, 2009. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Jessie (Smith) Banfield. He worked for over 35 years in the printing industry. Mark was a warm and caring man, loved by his friends and family who will miss his unique expressions known as "Markisms". Mark was a city boy with country roots. He loved to cook and was always up for a party. He always wanted to be NASCAR driver, maybe this dream will now come true in Heaven. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Dawn (Bailey) Banfield, Head Chezzetcook; brother, Michael (Valerie), Dartmouth; sister, Wendy Banfield, Halifax; nephew, Christopher and niece, Breanna, Dartmouth. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service to be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m. with reception to follow. GUYE, Marla Beth Louise
50, of Shelburne, passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital, surrounded by her loving family on April 21, 2009. Beth was born in Shelburne on November 19, 1958. She attended Shelburne Regional High School. During her early years she worked at EM Guye Real Estate and later spent 10 years working at Greenpeace in Vancouver, B.C. Her love of antiques guided her to open an antique shop (Down Memory Lane) in downtown Shelburne, later relocating to 100 King Street. Beth truly enjoyed running her business and making lifelong friends throughout the years. She will be greatly missed by friends, family and the community. She is survived by her daughter, Katie (Nathon); brother, Bill (Yvonne), and her father, Mick, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, Evelynn Guye; sister, Patricia Guye and grandparents, Churchill and Marguerite Guye and William and Eva Brown. The funeral service will be in Christ Church in Shelburne on Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carole Nixon officiating. A reception will follow in Anglican Church Hall. Everyone is welcome. NAZAR (Coolen), Heather Anne
Passed away peacefully in Toronto General Hospital on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Heather Anne Nazar (Coolen), aged 54 years, leaves grieving but celebrating her life, her daughter Sarah and her son Bradley. Loving wife of Lawrence Lighter. Loved daughter of May Gillam Cooper and the late Richard Coolen and her late stepfather Herbert Cooper. Dear sister of Peter (Karyn), Sandi (Jim MacDonald), Christopher, Douglas (Karen), and Gregory. Loved aunt of Lauren, Lindsay, Ryan, Chelsey and Michaela. Predeceased by her brother David Coolen. Lovingly remembered by her aunts, uncles and cousins in Nova Scotia. Fondly remembered by John Nazar. Heather showed the same courage and grace she epitomized, after her lengthy battle with illness beginning in 1992 with a bone marrow transplant, followed by a lung transplant in 2007. She enjoyed running, cycling, kayaking, and visiting her family and friends down East in Nova Scotia. GREEN, Embert "Freeland"
89, of Hantsport, passed away on April 20, 2009, in Hants Community Hospital. Born in Pembroke, Hants Co., he was a son of the late Cleveland George and Dora Roberta (Wilcox) Green. Freeland was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the RCAF overseas. He was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hantsport. He was also a member of the Hantsport Baptist Church. Freeland is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Gladys; sons, Graham (Betty) and Embert (Nancy); daughters, Janet (Brian) White and Barbara Lapka; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as sister. Wilma; and sister-in-law, Maxine. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister Norma McLaren; and brother, Stanton. No visitation by request. ALLISON, Michael F.
83, Canning, passed away in the Windsor Elms, where he resided for the last several years on Monday, April 21, 2009. He was born in Cape Breton. Michael was a long-time resident of Canning. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed the out of doors and going to flea markets. He also enjoyed cooking. His family and friends will sadly miss him. He was predeceased by his wife, Angeline (Dykens) Allison. He is survived by his sons, David (Valerie), of Greenwich; and Glendon (Darlene), of Wolfville; and daughter, Doreen (Sonny), of New Minas; grandchildren, Darby, Dylan, and Brady. Visitation for Mr. Allison will be held on today from 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service to be held on Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m., with Chaplin Jim Norton officiating, both in the H.C. WAINWRIGHT, Steve
A founding member of The Garrison Bros. and prior to that The New Folk Trio, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, April 23, 2009 at his home in Marblehead, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Tammy and Beth and their families. His musical career took him and his groups across North America, but their many engagements throughout the Maritimes in the 70s and 80s were the road-trips they looked forward to the most. The Garrison Bros. are probably best remembered for their version of "Song for the Mira" which became an arrangement standard for that song, but Steve was also a prolific lyricist and wrote the lyrics to the Garrison Bros.' own hit "Silver Sea". Steve is also survived by his bandmates Eugene Byrne, Kevin Evans, and Paul DuJohn; as well as former Garrison Bros members Bob O'Donovan, Peter Miguel and Lonnie Jones and many loyal fans across the region. Services have not been finalized but will be held in Marblehead, Mass. Arrangements are being made through Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm St., Marblehead, MA 01945.
