MacLEAN, Bonnie "Gail"
64, of Dartmouth, passed away April 28, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Truro, January 29, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Linda (Fraser) Crowe (of Belmont). She was a member of Belmont Wesley United Church. Gail was an educator all her life, teacher, principal and administrator, retiring from the Inspection Services of the Department of Education in 1996. After her retirement, Gail set up an education program in Iqaluit. She was an avid reader and served as a judge on the Dartmouth Library Literary Award Committee and was a member of a local bookclub. She was interested in politics and was a member of the Liberal Party. Gail and Ralph enjoyed traveling the world until recently when her health declined. Gail is sadly missed by her husband, Ralph, Dartmouth; sister, Cheryl Crowe, Truro and several cousins. She will be missed by her beloved pets, Guy and Rhapsody. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A celebration of Gail's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel, Dartmouth. Burial at a later date in MacDonald Memorial Cemetery, Boulardarie, Cape Breton. 61, New Waterford, died April 27, 2009. Born in New Waterford, he was raised by his grandparents, the late, Ralph and Theresa Head. MASER, Sally
March 23, 1925 - April 28, 2009, passed away peacefully in The Ottawa Hospital. Daughters, Pam and Karen are very grateful they were able to be close to her in Ottawa in the last few years of her life, even though that meant leaving her home in Halifax, and the friends who meant so much to her. She will be happy to be reunited with her always-devoted husband, Gordon. Funeral to take place in Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St., 3 p.m. today. IVEY, Gordon Wilmer
89, Halifax. On April 28, 2009, Gordon passed away peacefully in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Harry and Sadie Ivey. Gordon was a Second World War Veteran and an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Royal Canadian Legion, and Emmanuel Anglican Church. Gordon was a dedicated employee of Halifax Housing Authority for 26 years and prior to that, a member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 20 years. He will always be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Emily (Keeping); his children, Karen, Wayne (Lottie), Shirley (Ken), Brenda (Vern), Harry (Elizabeth), and Holly (Stuart); nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Faye Haycox. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Egan. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff on the 9th floor of the Abbie J.Lane Memorial Building, QEII, who helped care for Gordon, as well as Dr. H. Matheson. Arrangements are under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road Halifax, NS, (477-5601), where visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. in Emmanuel Anglican Church. Cremation will follow the service and burial will be at a later date. The family would appreciate remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
GOUGH (Dowell), Veronica Mary "Vera"
100. Vera was born on April 24, 1909, in London, England to the late Margaret and Henry Dowell. She had two older brothers, Harry and Bob. In 1914 the family immigrated to Canada and Vera spent the rest of her life in Halifax. In 1928 she married Eric Gough, a sea captain with Western Union. They had two children, Bob and Betty Ann. Vera was mostly alone with the children as Eric was away at sea. Her social nature, love of fun and adventure, high energy level and her playful spirit meant that she was always involved with her children, their friends and their activities. Vera had a rare vitality and zest for life. She loved reading, traveling, adventures, history, gardening, sweets of every kind (but especially hot fudge sundaes), long walks, bike rides or drives and saying and doing things that surprised people. More than anything else she loved laughter and her family. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Janet Gough; grandchildren, Wendy, Andy and Jamie Shaw and Joanne, Bob, Mike and David Gough and seven great-grandchildren. She was a strong presence and a force in the lives of her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. We were so lucky to have her for such a long time. Vera died on a beautiful sunny Tuesday, April 28, in Halifax at the age 100 years and four days. She was predeceased by her husband in 1956; her son, Bob in 1994 and her daughter, Betty in 2008. The loving, attentive and warm care of the staff of Arborstone made the end of Vera's life easier for everyone. Arrangements are under the direction of J. A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Halifax, (477-5601). A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 26 Purcell's Cove Rd., Halifax, with a reception in the church hall immediately after the service. CHIASSON, Sadie Jane
95, born August 11, 1913, she resided at Foyer Pere Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp, passed away on April 26, 2009, in the guest home. Born in Cheticamp, she was a daughter of the late, Placide and Marguerite (Romard) Poirier. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp and is survived by sons, Raymond (Mary), Cheticamp; Angus (Evelyn), Strathmore, Alta.; Peter Paul (Claudette), Cheticamp; Melvin (Paula), Burlington, Ont. She is survived by daughter-in-law, Dorothy Chiasson, Sydney River; sister, Marie-Anne (Louis Paul) Cormier, Cheticamp; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Ben Luc Chiasson; son, Daniel and two sons in infancy. She was predeceased by brothers, Mederic and Eddie John; sisters, Rose, Marie-Emma and Louisa. Visitation will be in Cheticamp Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp with Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. WRIGHT, William F. "Bill"
82, of Fall River, passed away April 29, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in St. John, N.B., he was a on of the late Thomas and Mary (Lobb) Wright. Before his retirement he was employed with Domtar Construction Materials. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice M. (Clark); sons, Bill, Dartmouth; Glenn, St. Margaret's Bay; daughter, Kimberley (Craig) Gamble, Halifax; brother, Malcolm (Maddie), Ottawa, Ont.; sister, Violet Major, Timmons, Ont.; grandchildren, Lindsey Gamble, Brett Gamble, Tyler Gamble, Zackery Wright, Ashley Wright, Michael Wright and Diane Wright. He was predeceased by brothers, Albert and Harold. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 1st in T. K. WILKIE, Eric George, CWO CD Ret'd
June 8, 1941 - April 27, 2009. Eric had three loves in his life. His dearest wife and soul mate, Janice, who he was passionately in love with and completely devoted to; the Guns, and his "son" and faithful companion, Gunner. He was the youngest son of the late Major and Mrs. Fredrick R.F. Wilkie. Beloved brother of Robert Wilkie (Phyllis) of Edmonton; Shirley Blight (late Bill) of Espanola and Lynn McGrath (late Carl) of Halifax. Father to Elizabeth Barendregt (Rory), Erica Flynn (Sean) and Andrew Wilkie (Chris); stepfather to Graham (Jesse) and Holly Eppert.; grandfather to Kaylee, Taylor and Isabella. Eric began his military career in 1957 joining the 2nd Regiment Company RCA Nova Scotia (Militia). The minute he was old enough, he joined the Regular Force 1 PD Royal Canadian Artillery as a Gunner. He served with 1SSM Battery RCA in Germany until returning to 1RCHA Gagetown in 1964. In 1967, he was again posted to Germany with 1RCHA. From there he was posted to 3RCHA Winnipeg in 1973. Eric returned to CTC Gagetown in 1976 and taught at the Combat Arms School where he gained a reputation as being an exceptional teacher and mentor to the students. In 1980, he was posted to Range Control a position he thoroughly enjoyed and spoke about often. In 1985, he was posted to Sault Ste. Marie 49th Field regiment in the capacity of RSS. While RSS the 49th Field Regiment won the R.C.A.A Central Militia Area Competition four years in a row. An accomplishment he was pleased to be a part of. Eric was published several times in the Artillery Journals with regard to his expertise in firing technology. He retired from the Regular Forces in 1989 with 32 years of service. Not content to retire, Eric rejoined the Militia forces and served with the 49th Field Regiment as the Regimental Sergeant Major until his second retirement in 1993. Eric was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 in Sault Ste. Marie and he served in several capacities including, Sgt-at-Arms and Building and Maintenance Chairman. Eric and Janice moved to Southern Ontario in 2000, where he came out of retirement once again and worked as a Provincial Offences Officer. Eric was an avid reader of historical and military genres, virtually unbeatable at games of trivia requiring historical knowledge, dates or facts. Eric was an extraordinary man whose mantra in life; "There is no excuse for bad manners." was one he lived and abided by daily. Well known in Ingersoll as an officer who was "firm yet fair" he integrated himself into the community and had a strong support local merchant's philosophy. He will be missed by his many friends and colleagues. At Eric's request there will be no services. Janice was able to honour Eric's wishes of finishing his journey in his own home. It was a difficult time, bearable only through the kindness and generosity of friends and family. Janice would like to take this time to extend her deepest appreciation to all those who offered their help and support during Eric's illness and to the medical profession who ensured he was treated with kindness and dignified care. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not meant to be, So he put his arms around you and whispered "Come to Me". With tearful eyes I watched you, as I saw you pass away. Although I loved you deeply, I could not make you stay. Your Golden Heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me, He only takes the best.
BISHOP, Gladys
Died Wednesday, April 29, 2009. She was a daughter of the late Chesley and Evelyn (Wright) Stiles. Survived by her husband, Carl Bishop; daughter, Sharon (Ray); grandchildren, Thomas, Madeline; step grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa (Eli); step great-granddaughter, Macrina; sisters, Margaret, Maurietus; several nieces and nephews and a special sister-in-law, Karen. Predeceased by brothers, Eric, William, and Douglas; baby sister, Hilda. The remains have been entrusted into the care of Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service in Furlong Jones Chapel May 23, 11 a.m.
NICOLL, Elizabeth Mae "Libby"
It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth Mae Nicoll, 76 of Bridgewater, announce her passing on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Lower LaHave, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Mae (Creaser) Smith. Libby graduated from Lunenburg Academy and then went to Maritime Business College in Halifax. After graduation, she worked at The Halifax Herald. In 1953, Libby married Bert Nicoll of Mira Gut, Cape Breton, and moved to Trois Rivieres, Que., where they lived for 11 years. In 1964, Libby and her family moved back to Nova Scotia, settling in Port Hawkesbury and then retired to Bridgewater in 1987. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Nicoll, Halifax; son, Jim (Lorelei) Nicoll, Cole Harbour; grandchildren who loved her dearly, Matthew (Jill), Halifax; Ben and Elizabeth, Cole Harbour; sisters-in- law, Carol (Jim) Pinhey, St. Margaret's Bay; Ethel Nicoll, Glace Bay; Anna Nicoll, Toronto; brothers-in-law, Bill Nicoll, Mira Gut; Ken (Marie) Nicoll, Houston; many cousins, especially, Elizabeth Fry, Windsor; Helen (David) Leslie, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews. Libby was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Hubert "Bert" Nicoll. Service 2 p.m. Friday in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. KELLY, Ruth
Halifax. It is with immeasurable sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mom, Ruth Veronica Kelly, on April 29, 2009. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Jim Kelly, whom she yearned to be with again; her parents, Frank and Emma Kelly; brothers, Donald, Earl, Ray, Ed, Hal and Bill. Left to mourn her loss and to treasure her memory are her children, Bernard, Raymond (Nancy), Marilyn, Carolyn, Shawn (Patty), Jackie (Barry); sisters, Claire and Irene, and brother, Frank; grandchildren, Pierce, Emerald, Laura, Sterling, Cooper. Our mom lived life on simple terms. She cherished special times at home and at the camp "Glengariff" with family and friends. Many thanks to her sister, Claire; niece, Elizabeth and her "chosen sister", Marie Flynn and daughter, Mary, for their constant presence and comfort to mom and to us during her brief illness. Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in J. A. BERRINGER (Moulton), Sylvia Victoria
69, White's Lake. Alleluia! During this season of Resurrection, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was chosen to join her Father's Kingdom of Heaven. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late George and Evelyn (Morash) Moulton. Sylvia passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 30th, 2009 in VG Site, QEII, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Byron; son, Alan (Karen) Berringer, Sackville; daughters, Darlene (Steven) Norris, Prospect Bay; Sheri Gallivan, White's Lake; and special "daughter", Danielle Duggan, Church Point. She leaves behind brothers, Clyde (Daphne) Moulton, Regina, Sask.; Val (Elaine) Moulton, Halifax; and Gordon (Margie) Moulton, Dartmouth; sisters, Pearl Stone, Bridgewater; Sheila Champion, Dartmouth; and Diane (Glen) Pitman, Bridgewater; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Shirley Johnson. She will be missed by her pet rabbit, Sugar. Sylvia dedicated her life to God, teaching Sunday School and serving on many choirs, ACW's Merry Makers, church councils and in many other church roles at St. Philips, Halifax; St. James, West Dover; St. Andrews, Indian Harbour and St. Timothy's, Hatchet Lake. Sylvia was a god mother to many of her nieces, nephews and community children. In her early life Sylvia was an active Girl Guide and Scout leader, attended the Nova Scotia Art college and enjoyed painting, and she worked at Moirs' Chocolate Factory. She devoted her married life to caring for her husband and raising her children and baby-sitting dozens of others over the years while living in West Dover. After selling their home in West Dover, she and Byron moved in with their daughter Sheri and granddaughter Jorja. She enjoyed evenings out at the bingo hall or gathered with family and friends playing cards. Sylvia was an avid baker and known for her date squares, fudge, peanut butter and shortbread cookies and the children always loved her Rice Krispie squares. She thoroughly enjoyed visits from her grandchildren, Vickie, Stephanie, Nathan, Jordan, Lindsay, Jorja, Guilia, Alex and Max; and great-grandchildren, J.J., Darryl, Brent and Nakylah. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Tantallon. Visitation will be held at her home, 80 Seafarers Lane, White's Lake, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Funeral will be held Monday, May 4 at 2 p.m. in St. Timothy's Anglican Church in Hatchet Lake, with Pastor Lisa Vaughn officiating, with the assistance of Rev. Cheryl Rafuse. Burial to follow in St. Timothy's Cemetery in Prospect Bay. Reception to follow in St. Timothy's Church Hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Timothy's Church.
