MINER, Helen Roberta
78, Rawdon Gold Mines, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. She was born January 12, 1931, in West Gore, a daughter of Hope and Roberta (Clarke) McPhee. She is survived by her husband, Victor, and children, Rose Weatherhead (Wayne), Upper Rawdon; Arthur Millen (Grace), Halifax; Halton (Donna), Rawdon Gold Mines; Jack (Joanne), Tantallon, and Alan (Elizabeth), Falmouth; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and siblings, Eddie, Bobby, Ross, Karl, Anna, Rosalie, John, Joan and Bill. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Lois. Helen grew up in West Gore. Following her marriage in 1951, she and Vic lived in Port Williams for two years, then settled on the farm in Rawdon Gold Mines where they raised their family. She was a foster mother to eight children and later a Personal Care Worker for many years. An active community worker in both West Gore and Rawdon Gold Mines, she was a member of the Hants County Family Services Board, the U.C.W. and the Upper Rawdon Fire Department Auxiliary, as well as a frequent volunteer for various charitable societies. She was a loving, caring person who truly cared about people and who gave generously of herself to others. She touched and left her imprint on many lives. Visitation will be today in Upper Rawdon Hall from 7-9 p.m. Remains have been donated to Dalhousie School of Medicine, with later interment in West Gore Cemetery. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in West Gore Church of Christ (Disciples) with Rev. Angus R. MacDonald officiating, followed by a time of fellowship in Rawdon Gold Mines Hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Helen's memory may be made to West Gore Church of Christ (Disciples) or Rawdon Gold Mines Community Hall.
FRASER, Mary Ann "Marion"
92, of Port Hood, died peacefully surrounded by her family, May 3, 2009, in Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Born in Inverness, January 14, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Hector and Katie (MacKinnon) MacEachern. She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood and a member of the C.W.L. Blessed with a wonderful sense of wit, wisdom, and a great love of children, Marion left a lasting touch on the lives of everyone lucky enough to have known her. She will be greatly missed by daughters, Betty (Edgar Cormier), Helen (Bernie Campbell), Alice (Louis Landry), Port Hood; sons, Pat (Marie), Port Hood; Andy (Faye), Halifax; Neil (Margie), Toronto, Ont.; Danny (Margie), Halifax; Charlie (Loretta), Halifax, and Donald (Dena), Fort McMurray, Alta.; brothers, Danny Hector MacEachern, Inverness, and Archie Dan MacEachern, Port Hawkesbury; sister-in-law, Sister Helen Moran, Kingston, Ont., and brother-in-law, Donald Fraser, Port Hood; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband of 24 years, Andrew Moran, and husband of 12 years, Alex Fraser; sons, John Francis, Joseph Hector and Alexander Paul, and grandson, Andrew Charles "A.C.". The late Mary Ann "Marion" Fraser will rest in the Port Hood Funeral Home with visitation today, May 5 from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, May 6, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, May 7 at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Parish Church, Port Hood with Father Victor Ozou Fuanya officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Donations can be made to St. Peter's Parish Cemetery Fund or the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
BAKER, Daniel Gerald
62, of Halifax, formerly of Crousetown, Lunenburg Co., passed away March 7, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Liverpool, he was a son of Gerald Baker, Bridgewater and the late Lina (Slaunwhite) Baker. Daniel was a member of the Halifax Vimy Legion 27, where he served as Sergeant at arms for many years. He volunteered with the Poppy Campaign and over the years he has donated over 100 pints of blood. He also enjoyed playing darts. Surviving are his son, Frederick Baker; brothers, Oliver Slaunwhite, Italy Cross; Ray Whynot, Lower Branch; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary MacLoney; stepmother, Garnett Baker; brother, Robert Whynot. Arrangements are under the direction of R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on May 6. Graveside committal service will be held 1 p.m. May 7, in St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery, Crousetown. GORDON, Edwin Thompson
88, Pugwash, Cumberland Co., passed away peacefully May 4, 2009, in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Rockley, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Daniel and Mabel (Thompson) Gordon. Edwin had spent his early years farming at home and working in the woods. He was employed as the caretaker of Pugwash District High School for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was active in his community having served on the boards of the Pugwash Co-op and the Pugwash & District Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member and long-time elder of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Pugwash, where he had also served as clerk of session and had taught Sunday school. Edwin will be greatly missed by his family; son, Brian (Helen), Pugwash; grandchildren, Mary (Peter) Smith, London, Ont.; Andrew (Lindsay), Halifax; great-grandson, Cameron Smith; sister, Margaret Chitty, Gananoque, Ont.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Isabel (MacLean) Gordon; sister, Jean Sellars; brothers-in-law, Cecil Sellars and William Chitty. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, in Mundle's Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506). DARGATZ (Sanford), Elsie M.
Passed away on April 27, 2009, in Chilliwack General Hospital. She was born in Burlington to Morley and Carrie Sanford. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Donna (Bud) of Chilliwack; son, David (Laurie) Benedict of Digby; sister-in-law, Ruby Sanford of Brooklyn; daughter-in-law, Fern Benedict of Lantz; as well as many grandchildren, great and great great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews throughout eastern Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Dargatz; former husband, Harry Benedict; son, Laurence Benedict; brothers, Carl and Lloyd Sanford; sister, Viola Henessy, and grandson, David Day. A Celebration Of Life will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 2 p.m. from Henderson's Funeral Home. FILIATRAULT (Power), Eva "Dolly"
January 5, 1938 - May 2, 2009. We are sad to announce her passing in Dartmouth General Hospital with family at her side, after a brave fight with Multiple Sclerosis. The late Levi Power and Myrtle George gave birth to Dolly on January 5, 1938, in Queensport. She was raised in St. Peters by the late Aunt Eva and Uncle George Butler. She is survived by husband, Claude who was Dolly's devoted caregiver in her last years; daughters, Claudia (Greg Dort) of Dartmouth; Denise (Robert MacDonnell) of Seattle, Wash.; Michelle of Edmonton, Alta., and granddaughters, Elysia and Leigha Dort; siblings, Billy (Penny) Butler of St. Peters; Anna Reid of Kansas; Beatrice (Tony) Malloy of Prince Edward Island; Billy (Audrey) Power of Prince Edward Island; Glenda (Doug) Feeney of British Columbia; Leigh Power, Joanne (Kevin) Edgecombe, Margie (Steve) Kinzeland, Terri (Robert) Thompson, all of Prince Edward Island; in-laws, Judy (Doug) Lumsden and Junior (Barb) Filiatrault of Nova Scotia. Dolly was predeceased by daughter, Andrée Marie; siblings, Erksine (Mary) Power, Gary Power, Patrick Butler, Michael Butler; stepmother, Marguerite Power, and sisters-in-law, Raymonde MacDonald and Doreen White. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1958 from St. Elizabeth Hospital and dedicated her life to caring for others. Her first job brought her to Canso, where she married Claude in October 1959. Traveling with the family was important to Dolly because of the bonds it created. Although Dolly was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1982, she did not let it become an obstacle for her loved ones. Her faith provided the foundation to lead a fulfilling family life. Dolly was always encouraging, supportive and never judgmental of any decisions her husband and girls made. The family wishes to give thanks, with love and prayer, to the many friends who were always there for Dolly. A special thank-you is given to Dr. R. Gibson who meant so much to Dolly and Claude. Thanks to Northwood Home Care, VON nurses, all the Paramedics and the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., May 6, in Blessed Pope John XXIII Catholic Church in Colby Village, Dartmouth. A reception in the church to follow. She will be buried with her daughter, Andrée in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney at a later date. PETERS, Gerald Fullerton
Bedford, passed away May 3, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 93. Born in Lower Onslow March 14, 1916, he was a son of Bruce and Blanche (Bigelow) Peters. He was a welder by trade and was involved in the repairing of both naval and merchant vessels at the Halifax Shipyards during the Second World War. Later on he had a long career in the construction industry working for Construction Equipment, Sagadore Cranes and Purdy Brothers in Halifax. He had a passion for boating and the sea, captaining first the Wasp, followed by the Sam & Judy and finally the Fundy Tide over a 50 year period. After moving to Bedford in 1952, he joined the Armdale Yacht Club, where he was a charter member up until the time of his passing. He served as the Fleet Captain at the club on several occasions and regularly shared in club cruises with his family and friends to places such as the Bras D'Or Lakes, and along the south shore of Nova Scotia spending many summers with family and fellow sailors at a quiet marina in Back Harbour, Chester. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Katherine (Spence), Bedford; daughters, Margie Gillam, Halifax; Donna (Andrew) Anderson, Halifax; Helen Archibald, Waverley; sons, Rick (Tammy), Dartmouth; Fred (Janet), New Glasgow; special daughter and caregiver, Sharmon (Rick) Petrie, Lakeview; sisters, Eva (Frank) Nowlan, Bridgewater; Florence Montriat, Victoria, B. C.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Patricia; granddaughter, Angela Burke and son-in-law, Allan Archibald; brothers, Roy, Carl, Earl; sisters, Helen, Grace, Marian. Memorial services to take place Wednesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. in Bedford United Church in Bedford, Rev. Diane Tingley officiating, reception to follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. BOUDREAU, Edwina Mary
63. It is with sad hearts that we the family of Edwina have to announce the passing of a beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and sister-in-law, who passed away peacefully and quietly at home in Arichat on May 1, 2009. Born on December 24, 1945 in Petit De Grat, she was a daughter of the late Jeantie and Felicite (Samson) Boudreau. Edwina left a lasting impression on all of those who knew her kindness, compassionate ear, sense of calm, and reassuring smile. She enjoyed her friends company at the Bingo, playing cards especially Pay Me at the campground. She was also quite artistic with a piece of material or wood while listening to her favorite country music singers. Baking (especially with chocolate) was also one of her favorite pastimes and could be frequently seen in the kitchen at Jeantie's Mini Mart in Arichat where Edwina was the manager for 17 years. She was also a former employee of Booth Fisheries and Richmond Fisheries as their Payroll Clerk for many years. Edwina was the first President of the Isle Madame Voluntary Fire Department Ladies Auxillary in Arichat and called more than one game of Bingo at Our Lady of Assumption Church Hall in Arichat. She was well respected and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her spouse, Victor David, Arichat; her son, Evan Richard, Bedford; daughter, Joy (Nick McEntee) of Ontario; her beautiful angels that she loved and adored, grandchildren, Felicia and Halle McEntee; brother, Venard Boudreau (Mary); sister, Leah Bond (Armond), both of Petit De Grat; sisters-in-law, Freda Boudreau, Petit De Grat, and Carol Shanahan (Frank), British Columbia; mother-in-law, Blandine David, Petit De Grat; brothers-in-law, Gary David (Mary Ann), Kenneth David, both of Petit De Grat; George Boudreau, Halifax. She was predeceased by her brother, Alzear Boudreau; sisters, Zita and Clarisse Samson, as well as a brother-in-law, Sylvester Samson. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home, Arichat on Friday, May 8, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Edwina's life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. May 9, in Our Lady of Assumption Church, Arichat with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Edwina will be buried in the Star of the Sea Cemetery in Petit De Grat with her mother at a later date. HILTZ, M. Cecil
89, of Port Williams, Kings Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on October 19, 1919, he was the eldest son of the late Hector and Sylvia (Craven) Hiltz (Meadowvale).Cecil was a veteran of the Second World War and was stationed at Camp Borden. Upon being discharged in 1946, he and his wife, Phyllis moved to Wolfville, where he worked for Minas Woodworkers. The family later moved to Bridgewater, where he had been employed with Metropolitan Life. He was a Charter Member of the Bridgewater Lion's Club and an active church and choir member of the Bridgewater United Baptist Church. He later worked at Feron Limited, and in his own business based in Dartmouth. He retired to Port Williams in 1992 where he participated in the Port Williams United Baptist Church Choir and in other community musical groups and pursued his love of gardening. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis (Ward) Hiltz; a daughter, Cheryl (Peter) Crocker, St. John's, NL.; brothers, Carroll, Dartmouth; Clyde (Ruth), New Hampshire; daughter-in-law, Dolly Hiltz, Edmonton, Alta. He was predeceased by a son, Brian; a sister, Laurine Rawle; a brother, Harvey. There will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, in Port Williams United Baptist Church, Rev. David Ogilvie officiating. Burial will take place in the Tremont Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to Port Williams United Baptist Church or the Canadian Diabetes Association. GORDON, Anne Isabelle
96, Halifax, passed away May 1, 2009, in Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home, Windsor. Born in Brookfield, Colchester Co. in 1912, she was a daughter of the late R. Byron and Annie J. (McLellan) MacLennan, and was predeceased by her husband, Rev. C. Earle Gordon DD., and daughter, Kathryn Anne "Kathy" Millward. Anne attended Colchester County Academy in Truro and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933 from Mount Allison University. Following her marriage in 1940, she began her 31 year career as a minister's wife in support of her husband's United Church ministries in Amherst (Trinity-St. Stephens), Truro (First United), and Winnipeg (St. Andrew's River Heights). In this role her social elegance, generosity of spirit, faith in community and personal humility endeared her to all. In 1989 she moved back to Nova Scotia from Winnipeg to be closer to family and, until her recent illness, continued to pursue an active and energetic role in her church and community. Love of family, loyalty in friendship, dedication to church and community, and a passion for classical music defined her life. She was a long-time subscriber and supporter of the arts, including the Winnipeg and Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestras, the Nova Scotia Art Gallery, and the Halifax Women for Music Club. She was also a member of the University Women's Club, and a lifetime member of United Church Women. She is survived by sisters, Katherine Hill, Walpole, Mass.; Winnifred Johnston, Ottawa; son, John Gordon and daughter-in-law, Brenda Willey, Porter's Lake; grandchildren, David Millward, Greensboro, N.C.; Matthew Millward, Toronto; Johanna Gordon, Halifax; Andrew Gordon, Hershey, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Samuel Millward, Toronto. Her vivacious energy, optimism, and joyful sense of humour will be missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held in St. Andrew's United Church, Halifax, on Monday, May 11, at 2 p.m. Reception to follow. Interment will take place at a later date in Winnipeg. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her name to the Halifax Women for Music Club, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or St. Andrew's United Church Mission and Service Fund.

91, Glace Bay, died May 3, 2009, in Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney. The daughter of the late Stanislas Doucet and Sylvina (Godin). Surviving are daughters, Pauline (Neil Frazer) and Lorraine (Emery Landry); grandchildren, Justin, Mark, Breton, Christopher, Heather, Mellissa and Tony; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband, John; son, David (Clarica Sanidad); brothers, Leo, Vincent. There will be no visitation. A formal Catholic Mass will be held at a future date. GUILLOTTE, Barbara Ann
54, Halifax, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2009, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in West Dover, she was the daughter of the late Seaton C. and Dora Evelyn (Zinck) Morash. Barbara worked at Stadacona for many years. She enjoyed bingo, a good game of cards and getting together with her friends and socializing. Barbara loved her pets. She was very softhearted when it came to people. She helped everyone around her. She is survived by her sons, John Firth (Megan), James Firth (Abby Brown); daughter, Dora (Jamie) Delisle; 10 grandchildren who she thought dearly of; her companion, Donnie Francis. She is also survived by her brothers, Darren Morash, Halifax; Howard (Mary) Morash, McGrath's Cove; Alfred Morash (Jeanette Berringer), West Dover and Cecil (Lena) Morash, Halifax; sisters, Crystal (Brian) Blackburn, Halifax; Rhonda (favorite brother-in-law Wesley) Morash, Prospect Bay; Alice (Vernon) Morash, Big Lake; Leona (Timothy) Hartlen, White's Lake; Mandy (Craig) Finlay, Big Lake; Debbie Morash (Eugene Boutilier), Middle Village; Rose (Cecil) Herritt, West Dover; many nieces and nephews, especially Stephanie and Brittany Morash. She was predeceased by brother, Clarence Morash. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Spryfield (477-5601).
