SILMARIE, Beverly D.
49, of Brooklyn, Queens Co., passed away at home on Friday, May 8, 2009. Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of Jean (Chemist) Stafford of Brooklyn and the late Arnold Stafford. Bev's passion was her family, her tole painting and her beloved companion Cooper. She is also survived by her husband, Brian; her daughters, Jessie of Dartmouth and Julie at home; her brother, Peter (Virginia) of Bridgewater. She was predeceased by sister, Nancy and infant brother, Robert. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool, where visitation will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Thursday, May 14, at 2 p.m. in St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Liverpool, Father Brian Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Seaside Cemetery, Brooklyn. Family flowers only, donations may be made to St. Gregory's Catholic Church or to S.H.A.I.D. Tree Animal Shelter.
BROWN, James Randolph "Jim"
76, Cheverie, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2009, surrounded by his family in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Cheverie, he was a son of the late Harry and Greta (McLellan) Brown. Jim worked for many years in the construction business for Sun Construction, Harbour Construction and J.L.K. Construction. His passion in life was his gardens, raising livestock and construction work. After his retirement he had his hands in many small renovation jobs and projects throughout the community. He also enjoyed cooking, playing cards and the guitar and listening to folk music. His favourite pastime was being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will dearly missed by his family and friends. Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jennie (Reynolds); sons, David (Deborah), Laurie (Cindy), Elsworth (Cheryl) and Perry (Donna) and lovingly remembered by his five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers, Clyde, Gary and Allan;sisters, Jean, Shirley, Beatrice and Phyllis and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by one infant grandson, Alex James; brother, Donnie; sisters, Pearl, Stella and Madeline, and daughters-in-law, Eleanor and Kathy. Cremation has taken place with no visitation, flowers or service at Jim's request. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date. MURRAY (Franken), Maria T. "Ria"
Sydney/Port Hawkesbury. We are heartbroken to announce the death of Ria Murray which occurred Thursday, May 7, 2009, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Tilburg, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, she was the only daughter of the late Henricus and Adriana (Vermetten) Franken. Ria and her family endured the hardships of the Second World War but always said they were the lucky ones as their city was one of the first to be liberated in November 1944. It was then that she met her future husband Stan. She immigrated to Canada May 22, 1958. Ria was lovingly welcomed into the Murray/Kauffman family. Ria and Stan were married June 18 ,1958, at St Theresa Church, Sydney. Ria was a kind and generous lady who devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her trips to Holland, Alberta, British Columbia but always loved coming home to Cape Breton and spending summers at the bungalow in Ironville. Ria had been a beautiful seamstress and was proud of the garments she made for her family. Ria is survived by her only daughter, Jeanette (Peter) Chafe, Port Hawkesbury with whom she resided; sons, Kevin (Melanie), Sydney; Marcel (Karen) Edmonton; grandchildren, Jessica Chafe (Devin Brow) Port Hawkesbury; Emily Chafe (Steve Rankin) Halifax; Evan Murray, Sydney. She is also survived by her brother, Jan, his wife Willie; sister-in-law, Anneke, all of Tilburg; special friend and companion, John Mertens, North Sydney, and many loving nieces and nephews in Canada and Holland. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Stan; brother Andre, and son Allan in infancy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Aloysius "Wishie" Murray, Patrick Murray, Jennie Kauffman, Margaret MacDougall and Mercedes Bradford. Visitation will be held in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George St., Sydney on Sunday May 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Theresa Church, Whitney Avenue, Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m. with Father James Oliver presiding. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in Ria's memory may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care, An Cala Palliative Care or Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Fund.
MUNROE, Donis Harry
67, Valley, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2009, in Colchester Regional Hospital. Born May 23, 1941, in Truro, he was a son of Harry Munroe, Stewiacke and the late Phyllis (Higgins) Munroe. Donis worked with the Department of Natural Resources as a bush pilot and then with the Canadian Coast Guard from where he retired in 1999. He was an associate member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. He enjoyed woodworking and was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the camp in Comeau Lake. Along with his father, Donis is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Elizabeth Mae "Liz" (Green); daughters, Katherine (Gordon) MacMaster, Grosse Pointe, Mich.; Phyllis Munroe (Khatchig Hayrabedian), Brampton, Ont.; son, Michael, at home; grandchildren, Mhairi, Rory and Ronan MacMaster and Alyne Hayrabedian; sisters, Karen (Ernie) Nauffts, Judy (Graham) Brundage, Diane (John) Stewart, all of Dartmouth; brothers, Calvin, Amherst/Stewiacke; Harold (Marie), Waverley; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Wayne. All are invited to attend a graveside funeral service that will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, in Watson Cemetery, East Prince Street, Truro, Rev. MOSHER, Florence "Bernice"
95, Victoria Vale, passed away May 8, 2009, at her daughter's home in Valley/Truro. Born in East Margaretville, she was a daughter of the late Otto and Hattie (Bowlby) Nixon. Bernice began her teaching career at age 15. She initially taught in a one-room school house, then in neighboring elementary schools, working with special needs children. She was the first principal of Margaretville Consolidated School and ended her teaching career in Middleton Elementary Schools. Bernice was a lifelong learner. In addition to her busy and fulfilling teaching life, she also helped her husband run a country store in their home for 22 years. Bernice was a devoted participant in the Victoria Vale Baptist Church. She was a very involved active member of her "church family" for 75 years. Family, friends, church and community were the cornerstones of Bernice's life. An avid bridge player, Bernice enjoyed many hours playing bridge with friends and family. Bernice enjoyed many winters in Florida with her siblings during her retirement. A cherished mother, grandma, auntie and friend, Bernice always remembered and cared about the details of each person's life. Surrounded by family and friends through out her long life was testimony to the youth and flexibility of her spirit. She is survived by daughter, Phyllis Cipolla, Valley; daughter in heart, Joanne (Frank) Cory, Gore; grandchildren, Ann Cipolla-Zarycky (Jerry), Toronto, Ont., Robert "Bob" (Nicole) Cipolla, Cole Harbour; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jenna Cipolla, Lilianna Zarycky; special niece, Marie (Dick) Robicheau; many dear nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Austin Mosher; sisters, Ruth Nixon, Louise Willett; brothers, Wilbur, Austin, Leonard; grandson, Paul Cipolla in infancy. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Sunday, May 10 in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Visitation will also be held in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., Middleton from 7-9 p.m., Monday, May 11 with a Myrtle Rebecca Lodge # 46 tribute service at 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 12 in Victoria Vale Baptist Church, Rev. Vaughan Henshaw officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. RELF, Stella Ethel "Teddy"
89, Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, passed away peacefully, with her loving caregivers at her side, on Friday evening, February 13, 2009, in the home. Born November 7, 1919, in Londonderry Mines, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Maude (Ross) Brown. Teddy had been a resident of Cedarstone for a number of years where she made many friends and held a very special place in the hearts of many of the staff that cared for her. She was always active in church affairs and attended Brunswick Street United Church. She loved music and there are many fond memories of family crowding into Charlie and Stella's parlour and listening to the guitar, harmonica and singing. Many will also remember seeing Teddy walking around town, taking in the sights, picking up groceries and just passing time. Teddy is survived by her brother, Howard Brown, Townsview Estates, Truro; several nieces and nephews in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas and California. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Relf; sisters, Rita Brown and Isabell (Brown) Gordon; brothers, Laurie, Thomas and Earl Brown. Special thanks are extended to the residents, staff and volunteers of Cedarstone Enhanced Care for your care and love. You looked after Teddy like she was family and she truly loved living there. BATES, George William
88, of Bennett Street, New Glasgow, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2009, in the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Westville, George was a son of the late James "Percy" and Jenny (Jeffers) Bates. George was a veteran of the Second World War, having served from 1942-1945, and was recognized for his dedication in service. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Marion (Fraser); children, Lee (Robin), Calgary, Alta.; Sheila (Don), Cambridge, Ont.; grandchildren, Scott, Dawn and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Adam, Scott, John and Chedon; several favorite nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Carl, Donald and Lloyd. The family would like to thank the staff of the Restorative Care Unit in Pictou and the Staff of the QEII for all their help. Also, special thanks to all who have helped during these difficult times. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, in the H. W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leo Fletcher officiating. Cremation to follow the service. CROSS (Haugen), Greta Claire
78, of Woodlawn, passed away Saturday May 9, 2009, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, surrounded by family and staff members. She was predeceased by her loving husband Ernie. Greta was the mother of Robert "Bob" (Carolyn) Cross, Sharon (Kevin) Muise, grandmother of Robyn (David) Bradshaw, Ellen Day (Devin Way), Derrick (Fiona) Cross, Shella (Michael) Smith and Angela O'Hearn, stepgrandmother to Geoffrey and Jennifer Muise and great-grandmother of Jacob O'Hearn, Aiden Bradshaw and Brianna Smith. Greta is survived by her sister, Barbara (Weldon) Bowser. Greta was born on December 28, 1930, to Clarence and Catherine (Dewolfe) Haugen in Dartmouth, and moved to Woodlawn when she and Ernie married. Greta's greatest love was her family and she loved to do things with them. Greta also enjoyed to knit and crochet and was always doing one or the other and sometimes both. The family would like to express its many thanks to the staff at Parkstone for their wonderful support. Visitation will be held 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 in Woodlawn United Church. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. DANIELS, Elreta Maude
92, North River, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2009, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in North River, she was a daughter of the late Emery and Laura (Acker) Robar. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, North River. She was an avid card player, enjoyed having company, playing cards, bingo, shopping and going for a drive. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughter, Valerie Daniels (Leo Cashman), North River; daughter-in-law, Hilda Daniels, Ontario; sons, Roger (Bernice) Daniels, North River; Cedric (Alice) Daniels, Conquerall Mills; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five great great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by first husband, Wilbert Daniels; second husband, Guilford Daniels; son, Carroll; daughter, Geneva Coady and one in infancy; sister, Stella Arenburg; brothers, Caleb Robar, Elwood Robar. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany, where funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Larry Ehrhardt officiating. DOLAN, Gerald Thomas
68, died peacefully in his home on Friday, May 8, 2009, in Skinner's Cove, Pictou Co., with his loving wife of 40 years, Ann by his side. Gerry was the son of the late Joseph Charles and Margaret Dolan (Windsor, Ont.); and the son-in-law of the late Dr. Joseph Baxter and Helen MacDonald (Stellarton). His is survived by his children, Marty (Christie), Ottawa, Ont.; Helena (Dave), North Vancouver, B.C.; Bill, Montreal, Que.; and Katie (Matt), Barrie, Ont. Besides his parents, Gerry is predeceased by brothers, Jim and Bill; sisters. Eileen Chapus, Donna Marentette, and Rita Nelson all of Windsor, Ont. Gerry and Ann raised their family in the Village of Caledon where they resided for over 30 years. Gerry was a Professional Engineer of Ontario and served a long and distinguished career with the Regional Municipality of Peel before retiring to his adopted and much loved home in the Maritimes. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou. A private service for family and friends will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Victorian Order of Nurses, Pictou County, the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital, or the Canadian Red Cross.
SMITH, David Wallace
77, of Hilton Head Island, SC and Lunenburg, passed away May 6, 2009 at Hilton Head Island. Born November 13, 1931 in Lunenburg, he was the son of Wallace and Audrey (Smith) Smith of Lunenburg and grandson of Richard W. Smith, builder of the original schooner Bluenose. David attended Lunenburg Academy and was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H. and Harvard College, Cambridge, Mass. David is survived by his wife Joan (Stowell) Smith; sons, Bruce (Caryn) Smith, Charleston SC; David Smith, Atlanta, Ga.; daughters Leslie (Robert) Fierberg, Watertown, Conn.; Laurel Smith, Atlanta, Ga.; sister Susan Smith Pratt, Naples Fla., and Lunenburg; grandchildren Leland Smith; Katie, Graham, Morgan Smith; Benjamin, Sarah, Annie Fierberg and nephews Tyler, Wesley, Derek Pratt. JOUDREY, Emery Winslow
It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Emery Winslow Joudrey, age 90, of Blockhouse, Lunenburg Co., in the Veteran's Unit, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, on May 9, 2009. Born in Maitland, the son of the late Theophilus and Eva Joudrey, Emery was a lifelong resident of Lunenburg Co. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War, stationed in Labrador, N.L. After the war, Emery returned to Lunenburg County where he joined with Stuart Thompson to open and operate South Shore Sales & Service in the Town of Lunenburg, until his retirement in 1983. Emery was a member of St. James' Anglican Church, Mahone Bay and had served on parish council for many years. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 23, Lunenburg. Emery was a long-time member of the Lunenburg Curling Club and Bluenose Golf Club where he indulged in his passions of curling and golf. The highlight of his golfing ambitions was achieved on September 12, 1985, when he made a hole-in-one on the par 3, 13th hole of the Bluenose Golf Course. He was a charter member of South Shore Senior Men's Golf Association. It would take a very sharp player to take him out in a game of cribbage. His home proudly displays his numerous trophies for curling, golf and cribbage. Emery will be remembered for his charisma in developing relationships with family and friends and for his integrity in business. Emery is survived by his loving wife, Lillian (Ernst), Blockhouse; devoted sons, Richard (Brenda), Sackville; Vance, Halifax; grandsons, Brian (Faye), Cornwallis Park; Marc (Jodie Melbourne), Bedford; sister, Hattie Barry, Hillside Pines, Bridgewater; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Emery was predeceased by his son, Gregory; brothers, Arnold, Howard and Harold. Family will receive visitors, Tuesday, May 12, from 7-9 p.m. in Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay.
