1949-2009
Evelyn Mary Newcombe - 59, of Aldershot, Kings County, formerly of Halls Harbour, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kingston Village, Kings County she was a daughter of the late Harry and Irene (Floyd) Gould. She had volunteered for the Halls Harbour Community Association, loved the outdoors and was known as a hard worker, and a generous loving person. She enjoyed playing computer games, working as a fundraiser and was known for her joking and laughter. She is survived by her husband, Peter, New Minas; a daughter, Mary Evelyn Newcombe, Kentville; a son, Anthony Clay Newcombe (Lorri Ann), New Minas; two sisters, Joyce Gould, Barrie, Ontario; Marcia (Jack Blinn) Gould, Gaspereau Mountain; two brothers, Leo Gould, Waterville; Clarence (Charlene) Gould, Truro; two grandchildren, Gregory Church and Daniel White; special friends, Reta Henshaw, Nadine Kimball, Ron Jones and Carey Pineo; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Norma. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2009, Pastor David Cumby officiating. Burial will take place in the West Brooklyn Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Lung Association. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
Mr. Perry D. Hatt
1921-2009
Perry Dean Hatt - 88, of Kentville. The family sadly announces that, after enjoying a long, healthy and interesting life, Perry passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Beech Hill, Lunenburg County, he was the only child of the late Levi and Ida Hatt. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served as a motorcycle dispatch rider. Following the war he had been employed as driver with Hennigar Bus Lines and for many years drove between Chester and Kentville over the New Ross Road. He was later hired as part of the inaugural group of letter carriers with Canada Post in Kentville, from where he retired in 1979. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Una continued their love for traveling in the RV and camping. For many years they would spend the summer months in the Annapolis Valley and winter months first in Florida and later Brownsville, Texas. He was a Charter Member and Past President of the Dukes of Kent Barbershop Chorus, a past member of the Kentville Lions Club, the Glooscap Curling Club, Kentville and was a Charter Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Everett Branch No. 88, Chester Basin. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Una (Peters) Hatt, a daughter, Wendy (Jeff) Gertridge, Kentville; two sons, Gordie Hatt (Dawn Estey), Fox Point, Lunenburg County and Randy Hatt, Chester Basin, Lunenburg County; three grandchildren, Levi, Joel and Dean. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Murray Shaw officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Lakeview Cemetery, Chester Basin. Family flowers only by request. Eileen Madelyn Snyder … 97, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Simpson’s Corner, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late John and Samantha (Ernst) Lowe. She was a member of the United Church of Canada and had been active with the New Minas United Church. She was also involved with the Canadian Red Cross and volunteered for several organizations. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Doris Snyder, New Minas; four grandchildren, Murray, Vancouver; Cheryl (Richard) Veinot, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Jacqueline (Eric) Olsen, Waverly; James (Denise) Snyder, New Minas; four great grandchildren, Steven, Michael, Nathan and Breagh; two great great grandchildren, Jackson and Kinsley; several nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law, Milton Snyder. She was predeceased by her husband, Obie; two sons, Frederick and Lew; seven sisters and five brothers. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service followed by a reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, Reverend David Hewitt officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Halifax. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Sheila Morrison
On Friday April, 24, 2009, we suddenly and tragically lost our great friend, sister, aunt, mentor and soul mate, Sheila Morrison. There are no appropriate expressions of grief for the emptiness that we, as her friends and family, feel and will continue to feel for our loss today and in the years to come. She left us in mid-sentence, and now we all just want to finish that last conversation . . . and be sure to say "I love you”.
Sheila was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 15, 1946 to John and Helen Morrison. The daughter of an old-school Scottish athlete and artist, she inherited his quick wit, creative soul and a gift for expression through language. Her mother was warm and matriarchal, and made the best scones this side of Aberdeen. Sheila brought all of their finest qualities together into one outstanding personality. She matriculated through Nelson Mac Collegiate and then moved on to the business world. In 1966, just out of secretarial school, she became the secretary of Canada’s NEW National Hockey Team headquartered in Winnipeg, working under Coach Jackie McLeod and General Manager Father David Bauer. When the “Nats” hockey team left Winnipeg in 1969, she branched out on her own and founded "The Fine Line", which grew into the now ultra-successful Winnipeg Communications Company.
Never one to let the grass grow under her feet, Sheila, being the perennial entrepreneur and adventurer, made her way west where she lived the life of a singer, then restaurateur, and ultimately, as the creator/owner of "The Business Group", another highly successful packaged office complex in Edmonton and Vancouver. Sheila reveled in her relationships with staff and clients in those days but the creative spirit that drove her, and her love of motion pictures, ultimately led to the pursuit of a new dream to become a screenwriter. With several of her screenplays in hand, and investment seed money, Sheila headed to Los Angeles. It didn’t matter much to her that the risk could have been greater than the reward . . . She approached this new experience with all the vigour, confidence and enthusiasm that we all knew her for, and power-lunched with many of the biggest names in Hollywood. “The experience was”, she would often say in later years, “character building”.
It was another writing opportunity in Calgary, Alberta that led her back to Canada and into the greatest unending friendship of her life with John Robichaud. John’s intensely creative drive as a documentary filmmaker was a perfect compliment to Sheila’s winning personality, writing skills, and management experience. The two worked closely on getting John’s work produced and broadcast around the world with tremendous success. During these years in Calgary Sheila opened yet another chapter in her life by joining Yoplait’s Western Canada management team. She made many lasting friends there while helping to expand the companies operations. Her greatest love and focus however remained the arts and all the while she continued to hone her craft as a writer/editor working on John's projects, and doctoring scripts of the many working writers she had befriended in her travels.
In 2002 Sheila and John decided that rural Wolfville, Nova Scotia with its rich artistic community, breathtaking scenery and simpler way of life, would be the next destination in their adventure. They purchased a fine piece of land in the beautiful Gaspereau Valley and in 2005 began to build their environmentally sensitive “dream home”. Sheila's continuing hilarious stories of episodes with nefarious contractors and laughable reasons for a million unscheduled building delays, filled our emails weekly and brought tears of laughter to our eyes. With her amazing powers of observation and writing skills, Sheila could turn any story of hardship into a work of comedy.
Inspired by the warmth and wonder of the “Valley” people she had so grown to love and admire, in 2006 Sheila set about bringing to the world the extraordinary stories that remarkable local individuals had to tell. The incredible people of Nova Scotia and the Wolfville area in particular offered fertile ground for her talents as an editor and in bringing stories to the printed page. Soon the venture caught fire and there were great stories from around the Maritimes, the Prairies and beyond coming through the door. Sheila believed that everyone had a unique story that deserved to be told, and she created “Just Right Pages” to help those who had found the courage to put their hearts down on paper but needed that extra guiding hand to turn their story into a book. Authors Betty Morgan, Bill Parrish, Cam Hamoline, John Grant and many others in the wings knew the quality of her work and were thrilled to have her talents at their disposal. Thanks largely to her, our lives are now enriched by their stories.
Throughout Sheila's life in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and ultimately her final and favourite home, Wolfville, NS, She cultured friendships like oysters culture pearls - she made us all shine. Easy to know and easy to talk to, she was always fully committed to you, quietly looking below the surface to understand what made us who we are. She always made you feel as if you were the important one in the exchange. That you were special. Conversations with Sheila were always personal, insightful, engaging, instructive and above all, uplifting. It was all good . . . all constructive. In that respect, we all became her family. As an encouraging friend and ally she gave us all individual support and a love that was deep and honest. Which now makes it so painful as we try in vain to return some measure of love and gratitude. She would not want us to despair.

Left to mourn her passing and love her forever are her friend and partner of 21 years John Robichaud; adopted family, the Broeskas, her brother-in-law Gordon McKee; niece Liz and Cliff Gogal and their sons Dayna and Dustin; and Nephew John and Sue McKee. She was predeceased by her Mother Helen and Father John, Sister Lee, Nephew Sandy, John Broeska and his daughter Marcia. There are also hundreds of friends from across Canada who would call her, "family".
Her story is now written, but the book is not closed. Interment will take place in Kentville NS, and there will be memorial services held in Wolfville and Winnipeg at a later date. Mr. Antonius "Anthony" van Oostrum
1939-2009
Antonius Johannes “Anthony” van Oostrum - 70, of Woodville, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in Grafton, Kings County as the result of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident. Born in Veldhuizen, The Netherlands, he was a son of the late Hendricus and Adrianna (Pouw) van Oostrum. He received his education in The Netherlands, moving to Nova Scotia in 1968. In 1971, he married the former Johanna den Hertog. In addition to being a well-known beef farmer, he was a former director and president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, a former director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association and was involved with the Cattleman’s Association. He was also heavily involved with the Annapolis Valley Exhibition, where he had served as director and president. Anthony was also a current director of Agri-Futures, the current chairman of the Nova Scotia 4-H Market Steer and Lamb Committee and a member of the Apple Farmers Association of Nova Scotia. In addition to his wife, Johanna, he is survived by three children, Andrew (Teressa Campbell), Grafton; Valerie van Oostrum (Greg Price), Woodville; Greg, Halifax; twin grandsons, Sean and Evan van Oostrum and a granddaughter, Lila Price; four sisters, Johanna, Africa; Ria (Johan) van Rooijen, Australia; Lena (Anton) Miltenburg and Thea (Gerard) Granneman, both of The Netherlands; three brothers, Peter (Effie), Upper Canard; Pé (Nellie), Grafton; Jos (Trudy), Port Williams; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request.
