Mr. Basil Ralph Wilson

Basil Ralph Wilson … 81, of Steam Mill, Kings County, passed away suddenly, Saturday, August 1, 2009 at home. Born in Centreville, Kings County on November 10, 1927, he was a son of the late Arthur and Blanche (Bennett) Wilson. He had been employed throughout the valley in the hospital system, retiring from the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital and the former Nova Scotia Sanatorium, both in Kentville. He had been a member of the former music group, “Valley Boys”. He enjoyed music, his flower beds, yard ornaments, candy and sports, especially hockey and was a Tiger Woods fan. He is survived by his wife, the former Karney-Jean Bent; two daughters, Barbara June (Bruce) Raymond, Kentville; Wendy-Fay (Garnet) Rafuse, Steam Mill; three sons, Basil Duane (Phyllis), Kentville; Berne Arthur, Centreville; Danny Eugene (Lil), Kentville; two sisters, Bessie (Harlan) Adams, Steam Mill; June (Ron) Rozee, Sackville; a brother, Donald (Lyda), Steam Mill; a sister-in-law, Joyce Wilson, Annapolis Royal; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce; two brothers, Harold and Robie; a granddaughter, Cassidy Karney Rafuse. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Following the burial, a reception will be held in the reception room of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Earl Phillip Blenus … 54, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away Monday, August 3, 2009 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Harold and Laura (Benjamin) Blenus. He had been employed with ACA Cooperative and later with Scotian Gold. He also worked in construction. He enjoyed country music and spending time at the cottage on Lake George. He is survived by his wife, the former Debbie Carey; five children, Wayne (Jennifer) Brown, Cambridge Reserve; Brian (Tiffany) Blenus, West Brooklyn Mountain; Matthew Blenus (Charlene), Waterville; Justin Blenus (Crystal), Coldbrook; Leora Spencer, Waterville; two brothers, Sheldon (Sheila), Kentville and Gerald (Betty), Cambridge; a sister-in-law, Erma Blenus, Coldbrook; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Jean; three brothers, Frank, Carl and Bernard. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009, Reverend Tim Bigelow officiating. Richard Noel “Dick” Buchanan … 70, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Arthur and Beulah (Morine) Buchanan. He had been employed with Shur-Gain in Port Williams for 37 years, retiring as Plant Foreman. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and spending time at the camp. He loved his dogs and was an avid sports fan, especially hockey and baseball. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Conley; a daughter, Nancy (Michael) Zboyovsky, British Columbia; two sons, Terry (Cathy) and Kenny (Donna Schofield), both of Kentville; four sisters, Ruby (Elbert) Thompson, Granville Ferry; June (Ellsworth) Fletcher, Halifax; Star (Peter) Dukeshire, Centre Rawdon; Barbara (Rick Milbury) Buchanan, Middleton; four brothers, Robert “Bob”, Greenwich; William “Bill” (Shirley), Kentville; Doug (Jean), Sackville; Bruce, Canning; four grandchildren, Justin, Kaitlyn, Jacob and Alex; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Archibald. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009, Reverend Doctor Judith Saunders officiating. Mrs. Florence Emily Parker

Florence Emily (nee Paine) Parker … of Medford, Kings County, passed away Friday, August 14, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on September 5, 1928 in Churchville, Pictou County, she was a daughter of the late E. Victor and Margaret (Reeves) Paine. Florence was the loving wife of Kenneth for 54 years and loving mother of Paul and Margaret Grocke of Waterloo, Ontario; Joan of Miramichi, New Brunswick; Wayne and Joyce (Nee Collins) of Medford; Ruth of Sydney. She will be fondly remembered by seven grandchildren, Luke, Sarah, Hannah, Lloyd, Rebekah, Kristina and Mark. She was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Ernest, a daughter, Margaret and her step mother, Frances McKenzie. Florence was a teacher who trained at the Truro Normal College and taught in several communities in Pictou, Kings and Queens Counties. She supported Ken and the farm by working both in the home and in the strawberry or potato field. She was an active member of the Women’s Institute and the United Church Women, holding several offices. She enjoyed the company of friends and family. Florence was a member of the High Tide Drifters with Ken for three decades. Friends will be received at visitation to be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009 in Emmanuel United Church, Kingsport, Reverend Donald Rafuse officiating. Burial will take place in the Habitant Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held in the church vestry. Family flowers only, by request. Mark Andrew Merrett … 23, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009 as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Sidney “Sid” Merrett, New Minas and the former Connie Arnold, Kentville. He recently moved home from Alberta and spent the spring fishing with his father. He was later employed working security at the Kings Arms Pub. He enjoyed trucks, 4-wheeling, working out and making people laugh. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and couldn’t sit still. He was an all-around good guy and was loved by everyone. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his twin brother, Michael, New Minas; his partner, Jessica Van Amerongen, Kentville; maternal grandfather, Edward Arnold, Kentville; paternal grandmother, Myrtle Merrett, Port Williams; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Joyce Brewster; his paternal grandfather, Ernest Merrett. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2009 in the Port Williams United Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiating. Sara Lindsay Tait … 23, of Greenwich, Kings County, formerly of Kentville, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2009 in Kentville. Born in Ontario, she was a daughter of Scott Tait, Ontario and the late Rose Marie (Stewart) Tait. She is survived by two sisters, Nikki, Tupper Lake, Kings County and Jodi, Kentville; maternal grandmother, Elsie MacDonald, Kentville; paternal grandparents, David and Dorothy Tait, Toronto, Ontario. In addition to her mother, she was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Ronald Stewart. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2009, Reverend Virginia DeAdder officiating.
