HOWELL (Gillis), Mary Margaret 'Peggy'
2015-11-26
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Peggy Howell, 90, on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on Sept. 23, 1925 in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary (MacFarlane) Gillis from Margaree Harbour.

Peggy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many summers in Northside East Bay, where she was known as ‘Aunt Peggy’ by many children. She was often the first to brave the cold waters for the first swim in the spring.

Peggy had a great faith and was a member of the CWL in Holy Redeemer Parish. She was also a former religious education teacher, a Eucharistic Minister, and Pastoral Care worker within the parish. She also had volunteered at the Loaves and Fishes program which was in former Holy Redeemer Parish Hall.

Peggy is survived by sons, Frank (Linda) and Joe (Lila); daughters, Beverly (Wayne) Morrison, Yvonne (Paul) Madore, Patricia (Rick) Alisch and Jacqueline (Jamie) Clarke; son-in-law, Alvin Gallant; one sister, Rose LeBlanc; two sisters-in-law, Martha Gillis and Eileen Gillis; brother-in-law, William; grandchildren, Frank, Illona, Jeannine, Alicia, Linda, Mike, Chris, Nick, Natasha, Blaire, Caitlyn, Mackenzie, Ben, Cameron and great-grandchildren, Nora, Cole and Max.

Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Henry; daughter, Madonna Gallant; brothers, Joseph, John, Hugh, Myles, and Alexander; sisters, Tina Campbell, Rita Heffernan, Sister Mary Lydia Gillis and Sister Grace Virginia Gillis, both formerly from Sisters of Charity and also John Harold and Mary Margaret in infancy.

Visitation for the late Peggy Howell will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass a reception will be provided by the CWL in the lower level of church. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Peggy may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

We’ll miss her humour and her smiling face. However, we know that from now on she will always be “Ticketyboo”!

MACDONALD, Adelaide Patricia 'Nan'

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Patricia MacDonald, age 77, after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Patricia was the daughter of the late Patrick and Agnes (Courage) Axworthy.

Patricia was affectionately known as ‘Nan’ to all her family and friends. She loved the simple things in life and will be missed by all who knew her.

Besides her parents, Patricia was predeceased by her husband, Reginald Donald MacDonald Jr., infant son, Francis, brother, David Axworthy and brother-in-law, Gerald Guillena.

Patricia will be sadly missed by daughter, Patricia MacDonald; son, Philip (Jody) MacDonald; granddaughter, Amanda Michelle MacDonald; sisters, Helen (Rheal) Duquette, Myrna Guillena and Carol (Rusty) Link; brothers, James (Marilyn) Axworthy and William (Celeste) Axworthy; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Roz) Hunt; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral service prayers to celebrate the life of Patricia MacDonald will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, July 9, 2016. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 6-8 p.m. with service prayers to follow at 8 p.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Private family interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Patricia may be made to VON Cape Breton.

HICKEY, Margaret Marie

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Marie Hickey on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born on January 1, 1930 in Sydney, Margaret was the daughter of the late Dave and Margaret (Hayes) Piercey of Whitney Pier. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Margaret will be dearly missed by sons, Alan, David (Carol), Bruce (Sharon) and Lorne (Heather); grandchildren, Chris (Aimee) Hickey, Laura Hickey, Robyn (Craig) Gushue, Tara (Andy) MacDonald, Alison (Robert) Melski, Peter (Melissa) Kozera, Amanda Kozera, Aaron Hickey and 11 great-grandchildren, who will also miss their Nanny. Numerous nieces and nephews are also left to mourn her passing.

Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Johnnie, son, Shane, daughter, Marla, sisters, Cecelia McNeil, Theresa MacDonald, Chris Rudderham and brothers, Frank and Bob Piercey.

Mom worked for over 30 years at the K-Mart, in the stock room and on the front desk. After her retirement she joined a variety of groups. She was a former member of the Inspirational Singers, Ukulele singers, Vonnie MacEachern singers, and the Red Hats Society. Margaret was a long-standing member of the Steelworkers & Sydney Pensioner's Club where she volunteered for many functions and attended Saturday afternoon bingo, faithfully.

Margaret made many trips to Bangor and St. Mary's for her bingo trips and traveled on bus tours to many locations over the years. We always joked that if there was a bus leaving Sydney, Mom would be on it. She made numerous friends and will be remembered fondly by all of them.

As per Margaret’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Margaret Marie Hickey will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street). Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Alex MacLellan officiating. A reception will be held at the Steelworkers and Sydney Pensioner's Club, Inglis St., following the church Mass. A private family interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Margaret may be made to Loaves & Fishes or the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Family gives a special thank you to Dr. Ann Francis D'Intino, Dr. Aboud and the staff at Palliative Care for the excellent care given to Margaret during her time of need.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Family was everything to Mom. She will remain in our hearts and on our minds, always.

KOLESZAR, Joseph 'Joe'

It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Koleszar, 76, on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Joe was the son of the late Steve and Yatsna Koleszar.

Joe was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, who dedicated most of his life caring for his family. Joe supported his family as a business owner for 35 years in upholstery and refinishing furniture. On his spare time he loved and enjoyed going for long drives and cooking for family and friends. His biggest joy was being with his grandchildren. Joe will be remembered by his family and friends for being loving, kind hearted and for always having his door open for those in need.

Joe is survived by his four children, George (Tracey) Koleszar, Roseanna (Glenn) Poirrier, Kelly Koleszar and Anna (Kenny McPhee) Koleszar; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his loving wife, Catherine Marie; sister, Marie and three brothers, Steve, Bill and John.

Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Joseph ‘Joe’ Koleszar will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10-11 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the service. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Joe may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County or VON.

The family gives thanks to the VON and palliative care professionals for the care given to Joe during his time of need. A special thank you goes to Joe’s daughter, Anna and grandson, Devin for taking dad in their home during his time of need.

WOOSNAM, Walter 'Walt' Thomas

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Thomas Woosnam, 1944-2016, at home on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, in the care of his loving wife, Patricia, after battling cancer for several months.

Born in London, Walt was the son of Edythe Irene Walters and the late Morgan Thomas Woosnam.

Walt was a hard worker and was a heavy equipment operator for many years before retiring. He enjoyed camping, playing cards and maintaining his home. He will be remembered by family and friends for being kind hearted and most of the time, easy going.

In addition to his wife, Patricia Woosnam and his mother, Edythe Woosnam, Walter is survived by his daughter, Cheryl; granddaughter, Nicole; great-granddaughter, Emily and brother, Robert (Gill) Woosnam. He will also be sadly missed by his stepchildren, Pam, Bill (Juanita) and Heather (Nigel); Walter was better known as "Bunka" to his step-grandchildren, Jeffery, Jessy, Miranda, Antonia, Emily, Anthony and Tyra; great-grandchildren, Landon, Quinn and Berlynn; as well as other family members and close friends.

Visitation for the late Walter 'Walt' Thomas Woosnam will be held today (Fri., Oct. 7) at Brock & Visser Funeral Home, Thamesford 177 Dundas St., Thamesford, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Walt will be on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 at 10 a.m in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. Following the service everyone is invited to the reception at Thamesford Community Centre. Private family interment will take place in Pier Community Funeral Home, Eternal Memorial Gardens, Sydney, Nova Scotia at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Walt may be made to a cancer charity of your choice.

We, the family want to give a special thank you to everyone who had Walter in their prayers. We also want to give a much thanks to Dr. Stack family doctor and palliative care and Dr. Izawa (Urologiest) also the palliative care staff for the care given to Walter during his time of need.

Born in Sydney, Shirley was the daughter of the late Walter and Annie (Orychock) Hewak.

Shirley leaves behind her family and many relatives and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Shirley Ann MacDougall will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 9-10 a.m. with service to follow at 10 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj officiating. Following the service, light refreshments will be served in the reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Diane Dye, 64, on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Glace Bay, Diane was the daughter of the late George and Edna (Dean) Pottie.

Diane was a loving and devoted wife and mother, who dedicated most of her life caring for her family. She enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards and a good cup of Tim Horton coffee. She also loved and enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. Her biggest joy was being with her family. Diane will be remembered by her family and friends for being loving, kind hearted and for having a special place in her heart for all children, especially those in need.

Diane is survived by her husband, Eugene Dye; children, Terry (Vanessa Ponee), Claudine (Billy) Rohrback, George (Wendy Dupe), Fred (Cara Leroy) and Blain; sister, Priscilla; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and a lifelong close friend, Marie Chiasson.

Besides her parents, Diane was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph, George, Donnie and Dougie.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Diane Marie Dye will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, January 7, 2017.
