MacDONALD, Dr. George

He was born in Stewartdale, Cape Breton, the son of the late Peter L. and Florence M. (Ferguson) MacDonald. George had a long and rewarding career as a General Medical Practitioner. He was proud of being able to finance his Mount Allison University years by serving as an officer in the University Training Naval Division of the Royal Canadian Navy. He started his helping profession while still in Medical School at Dalhousie University as a medical officer on two cable ships and Canadian exploration ships. He had fond memories of his seagoing years and the friendships he formed at this time he maintained and enjoyed for the rest of his life. For most of his professional life he served his patients from the Woodlawn Medical Centre. He was a valued member of the medical staff of Dartmouth General Hospital for many years. He also had a long association in caring for patients at Oceanview Manor Nursing Home. His life was characterized by service, compassion and kindness in both his professional and private life and he was loved and respected as a true "gentle man". George is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 26 years, Ruby Barter. She was his constant companion and soul mate to the end of his life, never more so than in the last difficult weeks. He is also survived by his younger brother, Sandy (Jenny) MacDonald; niece, Melody (John) Shaw; uncles, D.J. (Phyllis) Ferguson and Peter (Florrie) Ferguson; aunt, Rebecca (John) Carew and a large number of cousins. Cremation has taken place through A.L.
