At the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, St. Joseph's Campus, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, Carmelo Meriano of Chatham, loving husband of Maria (Gallo) Meriano, at age 72. Born in Castelvetere, Italy in 1926, son of the late Carmela (Follo) and Vincenzo Meriano. Carmelo worked at Elan Tool and Die until his retirement and was a member of St. Ursula's Church. He will be sadly missed by three sons; Anthony "Tony" Meriano and his wife Laurie of Blenheim, John Meriano of Toronto and Jim Meriano and his wife Kelly of Mississauga. Dear grandfather of Shawn, Scott, Carlo, Jonathan and Emma. Brother of Filomena of Italy, Mariano Meriano and his wife Maria of Chatham. Predeceased by two sisters, Luigia and Lucia; and by two brothers, Luigi and Geraldo, all in Italy; and by one brother, Giusseppe in Canada. The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998 at 10 a.m. in St. Ursula's Church. Parish prayers were said Thursday at 7 p.m. Burial was in St. Anthony's cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Lung Association would be appreciated.

At the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, St. Joseph's Campus, on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, Owen Joseph O'Hara of Chatham, companion and loving friend of Vivian Weaver, at age 66. Born in Chatham in 1932, son of the late Mary Freil and Owen O'Hara, he was a millwright for Seimens. He will be sadly missed by his step-children, Scott and Cathy, Mark and Cindy Weaver, Pam and Bob McCart, and Jill Ferren; by seven grandchildren; by a sister, Rose McGivern; by a brother, James and his wife Marie O'Hara; and by sisters-in-law, Kay O'Hara and Marie O'Hara; and by many nieces and nephews, all of Chatham. Predeceased by three brothers, John O'Hara, Hugh (Red) O'Hara, and Mike O'Hara; and by one sister, Brigdet O'Hara. Rested at the Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home, 156 William St. South, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday. Funeral service was conducted in the Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Greg Bonin of St. Joseph's Church officiating. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion held a service of remembrance at the funeral home on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Burial was in St. Anthony's cemetery. Donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses or to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

SALENBIEN:
Benjamin "Ben" Salenbien passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at the Public General Hospital, Chatham. Ben was born in Dover in 1931, and farmed there all his life. Son of Herminie (Van Massenhove) Salenbien of Chatham and the late Alfons Salenbien (1969). Surviving are his wife and friend of 43 years, Mae (Marchand). Loving father of five children. Two sons, Marcel and his wife Kari and their children, Justin and Brady; Dave and his wife Sue and their children, Kate and Andrea; by three daughters, Carole and her husband Jack Leclair and their children, Ryan, Kevin, Melissa and Nicole; Julie and her husband Brian Lee and their children, Allison and Samantha; and Dianne and her husband Kirk Hooker and their child, Taylor. Also surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth and George Serruys and Mary and Joe Szucs, both of Dover; and many nieces and nephews. Ben was a faithful member of the Oungah "Tiger" euchre team and Monday night Knights of Columbus euchre team. For family and friends, a memorial service was held at Holy Family Church, 647 Murray St., Wallaceburg on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at 11 a.m. with Father Dennis Wilhelm officiating. There was no funeral visitation. Interment of cremains was in St. Anthony's cemetery , Chatham. Donations to the Holy Family Building Fund, the Chatham Kent Health Alliance Foundation, or the charity of the donor's choice, would be appreciated. SCARLETT:
Unexpectedly at University Hospital, London, on Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, Edward "Ted" Meredith Scarlett of Chatham, beloved son of Larry and Carol (Gole) Scarlett of Chatham, at age 34. Born in London, Ont. in 1963, Ted worked for Reliance Steel Fabricators Ltd., was a member of St. Ursula's Church, was an avid astronomer, and played on the Sunday night hockey league in Chatham. Dearly missed by two sisters, Kelly Boegel and her husband Kevin of Dunnville, Brenda Dalby and her husband Randy of Simcoe; and by one brother, Pat Scarlett and his wife Teresea of Windsor. Sadly missed by several aunts, uncles, cousins; and by two nieces, Samantha and Shannon Dalby. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Jim and Bertha Scarlett, and by Russ and Margaret Gole. The Scarlett family received friends at the Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home, 156 William St. South from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and again on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at 10 a.m. in St. Ursula's Church.
