Thomas Maluish
The community of Kenora lost a respected citizen and avid sportsman on Monday March 10, 2003 with the passing of Tom Maluish.
Born and raised in Kenora, Tom devoted his working career to Brewer's Retail, retiring after 40 plus years of service. When not working or raising a family, Tom was actively involved in the local sports community, both as a participant and later as a coach and leader as his way of giving back to the community he so loved.
A fixture at the Central Community Club, he volunteered his time with events and coached hockey. He had a true love of the game and played as long as he could with his friends in the Oldtimers league. Many days were spent at the Old Thistle rink where he captained his broomball team. He loved the outdoors which led to his enjoyment of cross-country skiing at Evergreen ski hill and treks to Coney Island and in later years, walking in the town he knew so well.
Tom's second home was the Kenora Rowing Club. While being known as a fierce competitor, Tom received numerous awards both in the single and team categories with longtime friends such as Jim Ratchford and Bud Malmo. Tom's reach in the rowing community also extended past Kenora with his leadership in the NWIRA which encompassed the cities of Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Duluth.
Tom was predeceased by his mother Violet, father Sandy, brother George, sister Evelyn and her husband Robert McGarva. Tom leaves behind his daughter Bette in Nanaimo, Brian (Denise) and children Kristen, Michelle and Derek in Toronto, Daughter Wendy (Scott) Trusler in Whitehorse and their mother Doreen, his brother Ted and family in Kenora, Winnipeg niece Robyn (Brian) George and children in Los Angeles and numerous cousins.
At Tom's request a private family service will be held with interment at Lake of the Woods cemetery.
Tom was very appreciative of the visits and support he received in his final years by his special long-time friends, doctors and staff at Pinecrest. Tom's family would like to extend a special thank you to those friends who quietly looked out for their father over the past few years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society, P.O. Box 837, Kenora Ontario, P9N 4B5 or to the Charity of your choice.
