Peacefully, at his home in Manotick, in the arms of his beloved wife Georgina and his darling daughter Rachel, Mic passed away on Wednesday evening, February 22, 2006. As was his wish, he will be buried close to his dear son Graham Winston, who died in 2002. Georgina and Rachel, his grandchildren Emmie, Bryce and Lindsay, his sister Molly and cousin David, Georgina's mother Mrs. J., their extended families in England, and Mic's many great friends, former students and colleagues, will miss him deeply. Mic was in good spirits to the end, having faced adversity with grace. He survived in largely uncharted territory for several years, thanks to the tremendous skill and caring of doctors, nurses and staff of the Ottawa Hospital (Dr. Howard Lesiuk), the Regional Cancer Centre (Dr. Stan Gertler, Dr. Heather Bastianelli and Dr. Shawn Malone) and VON (especially Linda Tolstoy). In his memory, donations to these organizations would be so much appreciated. On Friday, March 17, there will be an informal reception from 5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. at the central location of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa. On Saturday, March 18, at 3 p.m., at Capital Memorial Gardens on Highway 16 near Manotick, there will be a brief graveside reading prior to the burial. Friends and family are then invited to gather at Landmarks, on the 3rd level of the Westin Ottawa, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., in reflection and celebration of Mic's life.

William J. Milne
Naval Architect
Bill Milne was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on June 3, 1928. Bill was a practicing naval architect and university professor in a career spanning nearly five decades. An alumnus of McGill University and MIT, Bill trained at shipyards in Europe and Canada before joining the firm of German & Milne in Montreal in 1953, where he was involved in the design of numerous ships for the Canadian government and commercial clients, including research and patrol vessels, package freighters, ferries, tugs, and icebreakers. In 1979 Bill joined the faculty of Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland as founding chairman of the Department of Naval Architectural Engineering - the first such program in Canada - where over 15 years he trained and helped establish in their careers a new generation of Canadian naval architects. Throughout his career Bill served on many ad-hoc and permanent maritime commissions, including the National Research Council Advisory Committee for the location and construction of the 'Ice Tank' which eventually became the Institute for Marine Dynamics in Newfoundland, and numerous government enquiries into the loss of vessels at sea. Among many professional affiliations, Bill was Honorary Life Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, serving for many years as secretary of the Eastern Canadian Section and on its education committee. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering, and a founding member of the Marine Technology Society in Canada. Bill leaves his wife of 26 years, Ruth Nicholson Milne of Farm Point, Quebec. He was formerly married to Jill Thorogood Milne of Montreal. Bill leaves his children Chris, Geoffrey, MerryJill, Joseph, and Jonathan; and step-children Anne, Roxanna, John, Lowell, Horton and Walter. Bill was the proud grandfather of 13 wonderful grandchildren. He leaves two sisters - Barbara Lambert and Eleanor Milne, both of Ottawa. Bill loved to walk and ski in the woods with his dogs, and after retiring to the Gatineau in 1994 was an active volunteer in cutting and maintaining hiking trails throughout the neighbourhood. Bill was a voracious reader and collector of books, particularly on Canadian history and the Arctic. He was a birder and stargazer with his grandchildren, and taught two generations of descendants to enjoy Canadian summers and winters skiing, skating, and canoeing. Bill died March 3, 2006 in Farm Point, Quebec. He is remembered lovingly by all, especially Orkney. A memorial service led by Rev. Fred Cappuccino will be held at the McGarry Memorial Chapel, 139 Valley Road, Wakefield, Quebec on Saturday March 11, 2006 at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. Died peacefully Sunday, February 26 at the age of 66 after fighting a valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Frechette; his three children, Eric, Mark and Chantal; his five grandchildren, Chloe, Ciaran, Jessica, Alex and Adam; and many other friends and relatives, including Helen Wood and JP Wood. He is predeceased by his loving sister, Caroline Frasell. Son of Cress and Vera Newman, Ted was born in Campbellford, Ontario, which is where his ashes will rest. He enjoyed a long career as a mechanical engineer, and his favourite pursuits included hunting, fishing, spending time in the wilderness, and relaxing with family and friends. Peacefully with dignity at the Empress Kanata (Ottawa) on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Eleanor (nee Platt) for 62 years. Dear father to Claire Davis (Jack), Gary (Janet) and Dianne. Loving grandfather to Sarah, Andrew, Jennifer, Katie and Laura. Born in Montreal on May 1, 1918 to Malcolm and Florence (Reilly) Roberts. Pre-deceased by his brother Malcolm and his sister Dorothy. Ed was President and General Manager of Mount Royal Press Ltd. in Montreal until 1963. He joined the Federal Public Service in 1964. He was appointed Director General of the Canadian Government Printing Bureau in 1970, which carries the title of Queen's Printer for Canada, and is the first honorary life member of the Queen's Printers Association of Canada. Ed was the recipient of many awards from associations such as the Graphic Arts Industries Association (President 1956-1958; honorary life member), Employing Printers Association of Montreal (Past President), Montreal Club-International Association of Printing House Craftsman (past Director, honorary life member), Jacee International (sixth Senator). In 1980 Ed was nominated for the Order of Canada. In his retirement Ed divided his time between Ottawa, New Smyrna Beach, Florida and his cottage at Lake Louisa, Quebec. He loved to golf, read and spend time with family and friends. Our family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Cross, Dr. Eapen, Dr. Hurdon, Dr. Coulombe, the V.O.N. and At Home Hospice nurses and the very kind staff of Empress Kanata. With profound sadness we announce the death of Dr. Mark Rosenbloom at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus on Monday, March 6, 2006 in his 71st year. Beloved husband of Myrna for 44 years and loving father of David (Rowena), Toby and Samuel. Proud grandfather of Sophia, Sarah and Edgar. He is also survived by sister Glenda (Michael), nieces Ana and Zoe, and predeceased by parents Sadie and Aaron all of London, England. Mark served as a Medical Officer and General Surgeon with the Canadian Armed Forces for 20 years. Following retirement in 1984, he practiced psychotherapy until ill health forced him to quit in October 2005. An avid squash player, story-teller and dog walker, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Peacefully at Carleton Lodge on Friday, March 3rd, 2006 in his 83rd year. Son of the late Harold and the late Eva Serson. Brother of the late Harold Jr. (Ada and the late Barbara Hornyansky) and Elizabeth Serson (the late John A. and the late Harry Johnson). Dearly beloved husband of Margaret E. Reid (nee Peggy Garnham) and step-father to Michael, Becky (Glenn), Margaret (Bruce) and John (Ellen). Loving grandfather to Kevin, Reid, Sarah, Rachel, James and Keith. He will be sadly missed by nieces Terry, Robin, Karen and nephew Ragnar and many cousins in the area. Paul started his career at the Dominion Observatory and became Director of the Division of Geomagnetism, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. He and his colleagues developed the Airborne Magnetometer and many other scientific inventions. Paul was also a great lover of music and played violin and viola taking part in many community quartets. Paul retired in 1981 and spent the last 6 years of his life in a nursing home.
