BAMFORD, ANITA
Anita Bamford (nee Schlegel) passed away suddenly and peacefully in her home at Highland Grove on January 10, 2001. Anita was the much beloved wife of Chester Bamford. She is survived by Chester and by her brothers and sisters, Rudi Schlegel of Dundas, Ontario, Inge Ravida of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Erika Lubrano of Jupiter, Florida and Arthur Schlegel, Angelo Schlegel and Burga Nowatski in her native Germany. Anita was born on September 15, 1932. She emigrated from Germany to Canada as a young woman in 1952 following World War II to seek a life in this country with its tradition of peace. She lived for some years in Toronto and Hamilton where she became a Registered Nurse (RN), a profession she served in for 23 years. In 1967, she became a Born Again Christian. She married Edgar Schunk and moved to the Haliburton Highlands, where she continued to live after his death in the 1990's. Anita married Chester Bamford, her neighbour of many years, on November 10, 1995. She was his partner in all things and her strength and loving kindness gave him constant joy, comfort and companionship. Anita took pleasure in looking after her husband, her home and her garden and was an excellent cook. She was also a very compassionate person. For several years, she worked as a volunteer with Maggie's in Bancroft helping abused women. She also helped her community by giving informal help and counselling to those who had difficulty coping with their lives. Her spirit is still with us. As Chester returns to the house, his first thoughts turn toward being welcomed by Anita's loving presence. Anita was a practical person of simple tastes who did not appreciate anything showy or pompous. She asked that her passing be marked with a minimum of ceremony. At her request, her remains are being cremated and there will be no funeral service. She will be sadly missed by Chester, her family and the many friends she made here in the Highlands.
