VAN DUSEN, Merlin Stanley –
At Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Tuesday, June 25, 2002, in his 64th year. Merlin, loving husband of Claudette of Newcastle. Dear father of Richard and his fiancée Patricia of Oshawa, Ronald and his partner Deanna of Newcastle, and Robert and his wife Lynda of Newcastle. Sadly missed by grandchildren Isaac, Joseph, and Elizabeth Rose. Brother of Viatta, Elaine, Helen, and Wayne. Following cremation, friends may call at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Friday, June 28, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Saturday, June 29, at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Bond Head cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Merlin’s memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.

WASS, Herbert -
R.C.A.F. (1940-1945), Retired from Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (after 42 years) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay on Tuesday June 25, 2002. Herb Wass, in his 81st year, is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Dorothy Otto and his children John and his wife Elizabeth of London, Robert at home, Constance and her husband Peter Lauder of Orono, Susan Terreberry and her partner Randy Rocco of Fort Erie. Peter and his wife Maureen of Lacombe Alberta, and Victoria Wass of Scarborough. Lovingly remembered by 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Also survived by brother Keith and sisters Elizabeth Austen and Patricia Wodger and predeceased by Brother Jack, and sister Rose MacDonald. Friends are invited to call at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel St. Lindsay, On Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Complete funeral service in the chapel on Friday June 28th at 3:00 p.m. Interment later at Uxbridge cemetery. Memorial donations to benefit Brain Cancer Research would be appreciated by the family.

DESHOMMES, Floria Joseph - Peacefully, at her home in Oshawa, on Monday June 24, 2002. Floria Deshommes, in her 94th year. Beloved wife of the late Dutrevil Deshommes. Loving mother of Pastor Pierre C. Deshommes, Jehiel Deshommes and Mary Jocelyne Prevalus. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Sandra Patterson, Patricia, Rodelinde, Rodelin, Robinx, Rose Nadege, Rose Myrtha, Rodney, Fredline, Sandra Wickline, Fredner and 6 great-grandchildren. Suddenly in Batavia, New York while camping at Darien Lake surrounded by his wife Wendy, son Sean and his wife Michelle and their lovely three month old daughter Taylor along with many relatives and friends. Dear son of Elizabeth of Peterborough and the late Thomas Chadwick. Brother of Tom (Sandra) and Diane De Ruyte (Paul). Brother-in-law of Heather Monkman and the late John, Kristy Simeson and her companion Peter Monkman. Karol and Dom Ganhao and Mike and Denise Gibbs. Loving uncle of Scott, David (Wendy), Andrew, Corey, Bryan, Jason (Shannon), Mark, Alicia, Sara, Jessica and Alexandra. Les was a kind and loving husband, father, proud grandfather, brother and dear friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him, with a heart as big as he was. We will miss him forever. Dear sister of Ann Norrish, the late Mary McLeod, Harry Bryden, and Clark Bryden. Lovingly remembered by her niece Brenda and her husband Richard Pyefinch and their children Lisa, Shannon and her son Justice, Burton, Jamie, Barrie and by her many family and friends throughout Canada and the United States. A Memorial Service will be held from St. Paul's Presbyterian Church 32 Wilson Rd. N. (corner of Wilson Rd. and Rogers St.), on Saturday June 29th at 2 p.m. Interment of cremated remains will take place at a later date in St. Edwards Presbyterian cemetery , Beauharnois, Quebec. Proud grandmother of Eric, Jordan, Sarah, Chase, Jonathan, Kyle, Justine and Valerie. Dear sister of Fred and his wife Sharon, Penny and her husband Mitchell, and Irene. A special aunt to many nieces and nephews. Sadly missed by her friends. A private family graveside service was held on June 25 with interment beside her parents in Orono cemetery. At his residence in Oshawa on Saturday June 22, 2002, Andrew Hayden at 69 years of age. Dear son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Hayden. Dear brother of the late Louis Jr. and William Peter. Andrew is survived by his sister-in-law Liliane, his nieces Patricia Ann and Shirley (Earl), his grandniece Kerry Lynn (Steve) and his great grandnephew Hayden Thomas. A Mass of Christian Burial was held from St. Gertrude's Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday June 26, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. Interment Resurrection cemetery. HORNUNG, Horst Adolf -
passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, June 22, 2002, at home with his family by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer. Horst was 65 years old. Horst immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1956 with $40.00 in his pocket. Although he had little money, he came as a skilled toolmaker and with much ambition to succeed in his adopted country. After working hard for many years, he became a partner in a mould-making company, D&E Precision Tooling Ltd. From this fledgling business grew a varied group of successful companies in the Durham Region specializing in Tool & Die Making, Plastic Injection Moulding, Industrial Supply and Real Estate. He was the lovinghusband of Diane, beloved father and father-in-law of Karen & Bob McBurney, Richard & Catherine Hornung, Jacqueline and Dave Bracken, caring stepfather of Cindy Dunn (Galveston, Texas), Robin and Ken Turner and Jacquelineand Jerry Kucharchuk. Horst's 7 grandchildren, Julia, Jamie, Jessica, Andrew, Joey, Jeffrey and baby Samuel will all miss their Opa. Horst will be dearly missed by all whose lives have been touched by this special man. Horst's family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook Hospital and Cancer Centre for their expert care during his illness. Horst will be laid to rest at Resurrection cemetery on Taunton Rd. in Whitby. Arrangements entrusted to Accettone Funeral Home.

With great sorrow, on June 21, 2002, Ida van Langen (born in St. Remi, Quebec), has peacefully passed away, at the Community Nursing Home in Pickering, at the age of 84. Loving wife of Antoon, survived by her brother Claudemile, predeceased by her five brothers. Loving mother of Cherie and Ty Roomere, Peter, Tina (predeceased), Johanna and James Krasowski-Gordanier, Rita and Alberto LaNave, Joseph and Elaine, Maria and Paul Barrieau, and Helene. Grandmother of twelve (predeceased by Joseph) and great-grandmother of ten. She will always be remembered and treasured for her loving, caring and giving compassion for family and friends. Her unconditional love held no boundary. Visitation between 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 23 at the Simple Alternative Funeral Home at 1057 Brock Rd. (south of Hwy 401, Pickering). Funeral Mass at St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church, Finch Ave. (Pickering), on Monday at 1:30 p.m., June 24, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke or Diabetes Foundations.

At Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Thursday, June 20, 2002 Winifred May Bates age 92 years. Wife of the late David Bates. Dear mother of Barbara Feick and Lois and her husband William Hannah. Also survived by 2 grandchildren (Deborah and George); 4 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. Dear sister of Richard Hunter and his wife Jay of Beaverton. Predeceased by 3 sisters. Lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and a cousin Edward and his wife Betty King.
