Lorna Hancock - 04/03/2006
passed away on March 30, 2006, in her 96th year. Daughter of the late Norman and Marian McGill. Lorna McGill Hancock was born in the rural area of Lindsay, Ontario, where she received her education in Janetville. During her schooling she received training in piano, earning her Toronto Conservatory Certificate in piano. She continued her studies with Ernest Sykes while she, herself, gave music lessons. In 1937 she enrolled with the Toronto Normal School to become a teacher. After graduation she taught music in Perth Avenue School until her marriage to Orville Hancock in 1944, when both she and her husband accepted teaching positions under the Ottawa Public School Board. In Ottawa, she taught music in schools and conducted many school choirs. In other activities she branched out in other organized interests, Choral Union, Pilot Club, Music Teachers, Centennial Bridge, Ottawa Hunt and Golf. For health reasons she retired from teaching in 1960. Traveling and wintering in Florida became the bye-words for adventure and recreation, especially after her husband s retirement in 1975. The British Isles, almost all European countries, Mexico, the United States and Canada were a few of the highlights. In the later years poor health has kept her close to home. She does, however, enjoy her musical organizations, theatre, concerts, drama and church (Rideau Park United). Funeral Service will be held at the Grace Manor, 1156 Wellington Street on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at 2pm.
