Inez Mae Wisting (nee Thurn), 83, of Flinders Place, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 at 8:35 p.m. at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
Inez was born in Little Port, Iowa, U.S.A. on Feb. 10, 1914. She was united in marriage in Guttenburg, Iowa to Day Emil Wisting on Jan. 31, 1937.
During Inez’s lifetime, she enjoyed travelling with her husband, Day, and also camping, fishing and staying at their cabin in Nestor Falls, Ont. In her later years, she enjoyed talking to friends.
She was predeceased by her father, Carl Thurn; mother, Elsie Leadiron; stepfather, Patrick Leadiron; and sister, Edith Barnhart.
Inez is survived by her loving husband of more than 60 years, Day Wisting of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother-in-law, Lowel Barnhart and nephew, Carson Barnhart of Guttenburg, Iowa; and many very special friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Father Brian Primeau O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited prior to the service.
Pallbearers were Ralph O’Connor, Debra O’Connor, Rhonda Tolton, and Dennis Duhamel. Honourary pallbearers were Margie Gibson, Ethel Gustafson, and Ken Egan.

ANN DOLK
Ann Dolk, 66, of 1143 Portage Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997.
She was born Feb. 18, 1931 in Fort Frances, and had lived in Fort Frances most of her life. On Nov. 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Walter Dolk.
In her early years, she was active in her church as a member of the Ladies’ Aide. She enjoyed cooking and baking, particularly fancy cakes for family and friends. Fishing was an avid pastime for her at one time. She also was a very capable knitter, knitting several heavy sweaters.
The vegetable garden was her passion. It provided her and Walter with many pleasurable hours as they tended to the seeding, harvest and preserving of their rewards. Ann was always meticulous, and took great pride in her home--even during her latter years with failing health.
She as predeceased by her husband, Walter Dolk, on Nov. 16, 1995; her mother, Olga Sobkowicz; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jennie and Robert Dolk; and by one nephew, Thomas Charnesky Jr.
Ann is survived by her three daughters, JoAnn and husband, LeRoy Charbonneau, of Theodore, Sask., Karen and husband, Orest Gushulak, of Rainy River, Ont., and Lori and husband, Dave Eaton, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; four grandchildren, Byron Charbonneau and Dana Klewchuk, and Neil and Cheryl Gushulak; her father, Mike Sobkowicz of Rainycrest; one brother, Walter Sobkowicz and wife, Astrid, of Fort Frances, Ont.; one sister, Mary and husband, Thomas Charnesky, of Windber, Penn.; one brother-in-law, Raymond Dolk and wife, Bride, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Pastor Brian Keffer officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m., and prior to services at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers were LeRoy Charbonneau, Orest Gushulak, Dave Eaton, Byron Charbonneau, Norman Guenette, and Roger Gerhard.
Honourary pallbearers were all who shared in her life.

STEWART VINCENT ROBERTS
Stewart Roberts, 87, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at his residence Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997.
Stewart was born in Treherne, Man. on Sept. 12, 1910. At the age of three, he moved with his family to the Rainy River District. He served in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces with the military police from 1942-1946 on the east coast with the Proval Corps.
On March 31, 1943 Stewart was united in marriage to Valida Provencher.
Stewart enjoyed travelling with his wife until they were unable to do so. He also enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and was an avid car lover.
He was predeceased by his parents, Nelson and Maude Roberts; brother, Donald Roberts; and sisters, Meryl Silander and Myrtle Cann.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Valida Roberts of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters, Lorna and husband, John Eckroos, of Victoria, B.C., Evelyn Semenuk of Campbell River, B.C., Lois Mathewson of Emo, Ont., and Verna Hagen of Atikokan, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Rev. Patrick Playfair officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited prior to the service.
Honourary pallbearers were the members of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 99 of Emo, Ont., and the members of Manitou Lodge #631 A.F. & A.M. of Emo, Ont.

CLARENCE CHARLES BRENNAN
Clarence Charles ‘Clare’ Brennan, 85, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23 1997 at Golden Links Lodge, Winnipeg, Man., after a lengthy illness.
He was predeceased by his wife, Avonia (Speed).
He is survived by his daughter, Carolynne. Also surviving are his sister, Helen Kirkpatrick of Edmonton; brother, Bert (Marg) of Kenora and Pt. Charlotte, Fl.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Cliff (Ardella); and his sister, Frances (Bill) Tokar.
Clare began his business career in Crystal Palace Jewellers in Winnipeg. He later moved to Fort Frances, Ont., opening Brennan’s Jewellers in 1945. After selling his business in 1975, he moved back to Winnipeg and worked for Birks Jewellers and Bennett Lindsey Jewellers Ltd. until he retired.
Clare was a member of the Provost Corps of Khartum Temple. He has been a member of the Shrine for 51 years.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998 at 10:45 a.m. at Golden Links Lodge in Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Clare’s memory to the Special Activities Department of Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Mary’s Rd., Winnipeg, Man., R2M 4A5.

WINNIE CAMERON
Winnie Cameron, 74, of 928 Victoria Ave. N., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Man.
She was born Nov. 20, 1923 in Canning Town, England to the late James and Beatrice Lowe. In 1945, Winnie came to Canada as a war bride and settled in Sioux Lookout, Ont. That same year, Winnie was united in marriage to William "Mick" Cameron.
In 1950, the family moved to Fort Frances, where they have resided since. In prior years, Winnie had worked for a time at Rainycrest Home for the Aged. She also was a member of the Redwing Rebekah Lodge #109, and for enjoyment loved gardening.
She was predeceased by one brother, James Lowe.
Winnie is survived by her husband, Mick Cameron, of Fort Frances, Ont.; one daughter, Lorraine and husband, Max Shapiro, of North Bay, Ont., three sons, Malcolm and wife, Marta, of Corbeil, Ont., Gordon of Saskatoon, Sask., and Donald and wife, Christine, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and seven grandchildren, Cory, Donny, Andrea, Jamee, Nicole, Chantel, and Jesse.
She also is survived by three sisters, Beatrice and husband, Len Webb, Rene and husband, Roy Milburn, and Dorothy Nicholls; and by nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances with Rev. Patrick Playfair officiating.

STELLA ALMIRA DICK
Stella Almira Dick, 85, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997.
She was born Nov. 19, 1912 in Devlin, Ont. to the late George and Mary Farmer. Stella later moved to Fort Frances, and on Sept. 5, 1936 was united in marriage to Henry Dick.
Stella was a very active member of the Redwing Rebekah Lodge #109. She also was active with the C.P & T. (Humanitarian Services), the Knox United Church, and United Church Women.
For enjoyment, Stella loved to play cards, and to bake for and visit people.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Dick, on April 2, 1991; son-in-law, Edward Plourde, on Jan. 29, 1996; two brothers, Harold and Floyd Farmer; and three sisters, Melta, Bertha, and Nina.
Stella is survived by her daughter, Sharon Plourde of Fort Frances, Ont.; her son, Gary Dick and wife, Linda, of Red Lake, Ont.; five grandchildren, Brian Plourde and wife, Heather, of Spruce Grove, Alta., Blair Plourde and friend, Denice, and Todd Plourde and wife, Lisa, all of Fort Frances, Ont., Staci Dick and friend, Steve, and Brent Dick and friend, Tara, all of Red Lake, Ont.; four great-grandchildren, Corey, Courtney and Brodie Plourde, and Tori Dick; two sisters, Ella Oliver and Bea O’Leary, both of Owen Sound, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances.
Rev. Patrick Playfair officiated, with interment in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances.

ALICE E. MAXEY
Mrs. Alice E. Maxey, 81, of Chatham, Ont., passed away peacefully at Riverside Health Care Facilities on Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 following a lengthy illness.
Her husband, Frank, predeceased her Dec. 8, 1994.
She is survived by her son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Diane, of Fort Frances; sister, Maude Trudgen of Morpheth; and numerous relatives in the Chatham area and in England.
Cremation took place in Thunder Bay, Ont., with the graveside committal service to be held at Maple Leaf cemetery in Chatham at a later date.

RON BALKWILL
The family of Ron Balkwill are saddened by the passing of their father and grandfather on Feb. 1, 1998. Ron died peacefully at his home, as was his wish, surrounded by his family.
Dad was born in Essex County (just outside Windsor, Ont.) on May 19, 1927.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Edna; brothers, Gary and Patrick; parents, Kelly and Frances Balkwill of Windsor; and sister-in-law, Jean Adams of Sioux Lookout, Ont.
Enjoying the memory of his guiding hand are his family, Sharon and John Myers of Fort Frances and their children, Jennifer Myers of Fort Frances, and Carole Anne and Sam Service of Vancouver, B.C.; great-grandchildren, John Antony and Rachel; Don and Jo-Anne Balkwill of Toronto; John and Chris Balkwill of Kenora and their children, Tyler and Katie; Alan and Joy Balkwill of Winnipeg and their children, Nicolas and Adrian; and Neal and Cindy Balkwill of Winnipeg and their children, Ainsley, Kelly, and Grandpa’s favourite pet, Neal’s dog, Bailey.
Ron’s love for the outdoors inspired him to obtain a degree in Forestry from the University of Toronto and subsequently to pursue a distinguished career with the Department of Land and Forest (Ministry of Natural Resources), for which he is remembered and well-respected by those who worked with him and those who had the honour of dealing with him.
Next to his family, Papa best loved woodworking, music, and reading. He was a fine craftsman and a mentor to many, encouraging independent and analytical thought in his children.
Many happy hours were spent by Ron enjoying Lake of the Woods in his boat and at Coney Island, where he spent many memorable occasions with his family.
Grandpa was cremated and will be interred in Fort Frances in the spring.
