John Hunt Day, recently of Port Elgin, passed away on Friday morning, July 2nd, 2004. Loving husband of the late Simone Verdun, Elizabeth Scott and the late Kathleen Everard. Beloved father of Peter and his wife Carolyn of Southampton, and predeceased by his son Michael. Stepfather of Gisele and her husband Richard Whiteman of Dorset, Michael Verdun and his wife Magda of Keswick, and Roger Verdun and his wife Karen of Kelowna, B.C. Grandfather of Richard and his wife Fiona, Kevin and his wife Bonnie, Trevor and Candice; great-grandfather of Keiran, Cameron and Anthea. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Nellie Day. Formerly of Sturgeon Falls, Oakville, and Sault Ste. Marie, John was a resident of Elgin Lodge in Port Elgin. John retired in 1983 after 35 years with Abitibi (Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto.). He was a major in the 49th Militia Regiment in the Soo, following his military experience as a Squadron Leader in the RAF prior to 1946, serving in India during the war. John was active in the Soo Theatre Workshop, Camera Club and Sturgeon Falls Museum. He was an ardent architect, woodworker, gardener and fisherman. His family wishes to thank the staff at Elgin Lodge for their love and support for John and Simone over the past two years. We also wish to thank the staff at the Southampton Hospital for their care of John during the last month. A family service was held at the W. Kent Milroy Port Elgin Chapel in Port Elgin on Sunday June 4th. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Grey-Bruce Health Services, Southampton. Arrangements are in the care of the W. Family and friends are saddened to announce the passing of Audrey James of Blind River, in her 86th year, on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at Golden Birches Terrace in the Blind River District Health Centre. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Edward, step-son Richard and son Jeffrey, and by her parents Charles and Katherine Needs and brother William Needs. Audrey is survived by her daughter Judy, of Toronto and her son Kelly, wife Diane, of Blind River. She was a dear granny to Pauli-Ann. Also survived by step-daughter Irma Severn Bridge, step-grandchildren Derek, Darlene and Darryl, and six step-great- grandchildren. Survived also by brother Norman Needs of Golden Birches Terrace in Blind River. Audrey James was trained as a Registered Nurse in Windsor, and worked at Plummer Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. She returned to Blind River to assist her father at C.A. Needs Insurance and Travel Agency and worked at numerous other retail businesses in the Blind River area. Audrey was well known for her intelligence and dry sense of humour. She was a strong and determined woman long before such traits became fashionable, and was fiercely proud of her family. She will be greatly missed, but always remembered, treasured and admired. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at the Menard Funeral Home, 72 Lakeside Ave. Blind River, on Tuesday, July 6, time incomplete. passed away peacefully on Monday, June 28, 2004 at age 93. She was born in Victoria, BC on October 19, 1910 and was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 1966. Betty grew up in Victoria with three brothers. She completed her schooling at UBC and became a qualified English and French teacher, but her only teaching experience came many years later when she taught kindergarten classes in Kamloops. Instead, while singing in the choir at Metropolitan United Church in Victoria, she met Jim Warr, who had recently come on staff at the church as the associate minister. Betty and Jim married in 1936 and moved to Cloverdale, where their only son was born. The family ministered in Vancouver, Trail, Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, Kamloops, and Burnaby with their final pastorate in Hammond, BC. After her husband passed away, Betty returned to Victoria and first worked in the office of Metropolitan United Church and later, the library at the University of Victoria. She moved to Chilliwack about 15 years ago to be closer to her family. Betty is survived by her son, Dale (Wendy); grandchildren, Lisa (Gord) Ponak, Heidi (Dave) Blundell; and two great grandchildren, Caleb and Abby Blundell. A Memorial Service was held at Chilliwack United Church on Saturday, July 3, 2004. Friends may wish to send a donation in her memory to Hungry for Life International, 21-46030 Yale Rd.
