Mr. Harry Joseph Long
January 1, 1922 - July 15, 2007
Red passed away on July 15 at Concordia Hospital with his wife Cathy of 62 years and his family by his side.
Born in Winnipeg, January 1, 1922 to Joseph and Mary Long. During his early teen years, during the Depression, he did any and all odd jobs to help support his family. He then joined the army in 1939, and served with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He trained and was stationed in England. Red was part of the Dieppe Raid and was seriously wounded. But instead of being sent home to Canada, he chose to remain in England and served in the army. During this time he met the "love of his life", Cathy Whelan, whom he married in 1945 before returning to Winnipeg.
Upon arriving home from the service, Red started working for the City of Winnipeg, where he worked for 38 years. When he joined the City of Winnipeg, Red became involved with the Union, CUPE, Local 500 and was a strong union man all his working career. He joined the Legion, because of his time in the service and was a long and active member for many years. He was also a proud and long time member of the Cameron Association.
Red lived a long and happy life with many holidays and travels overseas with his wife, always taking Cathy home to Ireland to see her family. Red had strong family values that were passed on to his family and we hope to continue to pass along these values.
We wish to extent our thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and compassionate staff of 3W at Concordia Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
