PRESCOTT -- Ewald "Ed" Heisel, 66, retired DuPont Canada employee, died October 22, 2002 at his home.
He was born November 24, 1935 in Poland to Richard Heisel and the former Mina Kirstein. He was evacuated to Germany during the Second World War and arrived in Prescott in 1952.
He attended carpentry school in 1955 and was a maintenance mechanic at DuPont Canada Inc.'s Maitland Site for 41 years. He also served on the plant's fire crew for many years. He retired in 1997.
His interests included woodworking and gardening.
Mr. Heisel is survived by his mother, Mina Heisel; wife Nancy Heisel, whom he married August 3, 1985 in Brockville; daughter Lore Bennett and husband Alvin; two sons, Tim and wife Corinne and Mark and wife Lisa; and grandchildren Sarah and Kristin Bennett, Kyle Heisel and Dylan and Amara Heisel.
He is also survived by his stepchildren Teresa Maggio, Gina Kennedy and husband Quintin, and Frank Maggio.
He leaves a brother Gus and wife Willie, sister Edna Briet, aunts, uncles and cousins in Chicago, Ill., brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
His father and a granddaughter, Krista, predeceased him.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on October 25 the funeral was held, with Rev. Tim Kuhlmann officiating. A eulogy was given by Fred Notling. Burial followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery.
The active pallbearers were Leo Kashube, Don Clunas, Paul Heisel, Bill McGrory, Gerry Kleiboer and Darryl Phillips. Honorary pallbearers were Nick Talajko, Rob Heisel, Michelle Briet and John Hughes.
E.L. 'Patrick' McDerby, 65
E.L. "Patrick" McDerby, a retired armed forces major, died October 11, 2002 at Ottawa Civic Hospital. A resident of Merrickville, he was 65.
He was born Edward Latimer McDerby on March 14, 1937, in Halifax County, N.S. He was raised and educated in Halifax and Windsor, Ont.
In 1953 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and achieved the rank of major before his retirement in 1980. After his military career, he worked at the Kemptville Building Centre.
He belonged to the Shrine and Grand Lodge and was a member of the Brockville Shrine Klown Unit. He belonged to the Grand Lodge Masons of Kemptville, No. 28, and was past president of the Royal Canadian Legion in Kemptville.
He married Yvonne Marie Jodoin on February 23, 1996, in Merrickville United Church.
Mr. McDerby enjoyed his grandchildren, family, friends, golfing, gardening and two dogs, Barney and Chrissie.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne McDerby, sons Leonard and Wolfgang McDerby and stepson Michael Mallette, daughter Michelle McDerby (Passey) and stepdaughters Michelle Pruner and Lisa Mason, as well as five grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Kathleen Henning and Gwen Settle, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville and members of the Royal Canadian Legion and Mount Zion Lodge 28 AF held tribute services. The funeral was held October 15 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association and the Arthritis Society.
Peter Jason, 87
Peter Jason, 87, died after a brief illness October 14, 2002 at Sherwood Park Manor, where he had lived for four years.
He was born in the Rainy River district of Ontario on July 15, 1915. His parents, Alexander Jason and the former Anna Byc, were Ukrainian immigrants who had settled in Rainy River in 1905 and raised a large family under difficult pioneering conditions. They farmed and harvested pulpwood.
At an early age, Peter left home and worked in the Noranda mines of northern Ontario and Quebec.
He joined the Canadian Army in the Second World War and was stationed in Ottawa and Montreal. In 1940, while he was a patient in a Toronto hospital, he met a nurse, Alda Mclean, formerly of Roebuck. They were married in 1941.
After the war he operated a general store for several years at the corner of Richmond Road and Woodroffe Avenue in Ottawa's west end. The couple sold the store in 1949 and bought a fruit farm on then County Road 2, just east of the DuPont Canada Maitland Site plant. After DuPont expanded and purchased their farm, they relocated and purchased a farm on the Blue Church Road, just north of Highway 401, where they farmed until their retirement in 1974.
Mr. Jason was an innovative farmer who owned the first crop sprayer in Augusta township and attended seminars and workshops at KCAT to learn about new corn hybrids, fertilizers and weed control using the new herbicides available on the market.
He was predeceased by his wife Alda in 1998. He is survived by children Ron and wife Susan of Brockville, Shelley Coddington and husband Dave of Calgary and grandchildren Jennifer and Andrew of Calgary. Also surviving are his sister Olga Warosczak of Kamloops, B.C., and brother Albert of Abbottsford, B.C.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on October 19 the funeral was held, with Rev. Blair Paterson of St. Paul's United Church officiating. Burial followed at Maynard Cemetery.
The pallbearers were George and Edward Robinson, Ron Good, Rick Smith, John Neddo and Jim Walsh.

Beatrice Davidson, 93
Beatrice "Bea" May Davidson, 93, died October 26, 2002 at her home. She had been in declining health in recent months.
She was born October 19, 1909 at Spencerville, the daughter of James Fleming and Hannah Woodward. She grew up in Roebuck and attended McLeanville and Roebuck public schools.
She operated a mail route in the Spencerville area in her early years. She also served as organist at Roebuck United Church for many years.
On October 27, 1951 she married Donald Hugh Davidson, known as Hugh, and moved to the Hallecks area, west of Brockville, where they farmed until his retirement in early 1969.
Mrs. Davidson became a member of St. John's United Church in Brockville. Music and playing the piano provided fulfilment in her life. She played for services at St. Vincent de Paul and Brockville General hospitals, as well as at Buell Fitzsimmons Manor.
She belonged to the Brockville General Auxiliary and served in various positions from 1972 to 2001. In March 1992 she was honoured for her many hours of volunteer service with a life membership in the BGH Auxiliary, the highest honour an individual auxiliary can bestow.
She was a past secretary/treasurer of the National Farmers' Union District 318.
She belonged to Brockville Seniors Club 85, The Shepherd's Centre and Victorian Order of Nurses volunteers. She faithfully attended Young At Heart functions at Highway Pentecostal Church and was a past member of the Golden Entertainers. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening.
Mrs. Davidson was predeceased by her husband but is survived by her stepson Keith Davidson and wife Doris of Mallorytown and stepdaughter Marjorie Streight and husband Ralph of Bishops Mills, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are six nephews: Reg Rice and wife Dorothy of Hammond, N.Y., Bobby Rice of Toronto, Winston Rice and wife Carol of North Augusta, Car Rice and wife Annie of RR 4, Brockville, Paul Rice and wife Sharon of RR 2, Addison and Larry Rice and wife Sharon of Brockville, as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also predeceased by her sister Myrtle Rice and brother Laurence Fleming, as well as a niece Alice Ferguson, a nephew Donald Rice and a close cousin Ola Woodward.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on November 4 the funeral was held, with Rev. Myra Garvin of St. John's United Church officiating. A eulogy was given by Pastor David Downing of Highway Pentecostal Church. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were two nephews, Carl and Paul Rice, and the honorary pallbearers were Dr. R. S. Loughrey, Paul Fournier and Rev. David Davidson.
Memorial donations to St. John's United Church and Roebuck United Church will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Albert Steenwyk, 65
Albert Steenwyk, 65, of RR 5, Brockville, died of cancer October 17, 2002 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital after an illness lasting two months.
He was born December 15, 1936, in Uithuizermeeden, Holland, to Albert Steenwyk and the former Jennie Kuizenga. He was raised and educated in Holland and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1952. They settled in the Brockville area.
He married Ellen Lozo on July 19, 1958, in Brockville and they lived in the Manhard area in Elizabethtown Township.
Mr. Steenwyk worked for George T. Fulford on the grounds of Fulford Place as a very young man. Then he worked at a Brockville grocery store and at the Selkirk Metalbestos plant. For about 10 years after that he worked for O.E. McDougall in his septic waste disposal business. Twenty-five years ago he started his own business, Alberts Liquid Waste, and with the help of his wife Ellen operated it successfully to the present. The business is being continued by his family.
He was a member of Manhard United Church and served as the church steward. He enjoyed woodworking and repairing and building grandfather clocks. He also went hunting and maintained a fish pond on his property. He loved flowers, especially the roses he grew.
He enjoyed his family and friends and had a good rapport with his grandchildren. He liked to lend a hand where needed.
Mr. Steenwyk is survived by wife Ellen Steenwyk, his son Fred and wife Denise of Lyn and his four daughters, Jennie Wong and husband Hank of Orleans, Debbie Throop and friend Rick of Brockville, Bonnie Steenwyk and friend Frank of Prescott and Mary Ellen Steenwyk and friend Harm of Brockville, as well as 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brothers Peter and wife Tryn of Prescott and Klass and wife Maxine of Mallorytown, special nephews Rick Steenwyk and Dave Cameron, and two special friends, Ties Klein of Holland and Gary Rusland, as well as brother-in-law Douglas Lozo and wife Mary of Lyn and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Leo and nephew Bobby.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on October 18 and 19. The well-attended funeral was held October 20 in the Barclay Chapel, with Linda Winton of Manhard United Church officiating. Eulogies were given by Peter and Rick Steenwyk and Phil Kall, and Rachel Howe read a special poem. Burial followed at Manhard Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Dave Cameron, Rick Steenwyk, Gary Rusland, Tom Trenholme, Larry Burns and Steve Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Williams, Benny Lyons, Ron Roles, Dave Sutton, Baldy Fox and Lyle Baker.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and Manhard United Church.
