Jim Caldwell, 66

James "Jim" Lorne Caldwell, 66, died suddenly of a heart attack in Brockville on November 18, 2002.

He was born September 10, 1936, in Brockville to James Claude Caldwell and the former Dorothy May Brown. He attended Prince of Wales Elementary School and Brockville Collegiate Institute, completing his education at Brockville Business College.

On November 28, 1959, he married Mary Doris Madeline Chisamore in Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville.

He worked at AEL Microtel (later Brock Telecom) as accountant/clerk in the stationary stores and mailroom. He retired in 1987.

A member of Trinity Anglican Church, he belonged to Brock Lodge No. 9, St. Lawrence District No. 50, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and also to Brock Encampment No. 9 and Maple Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 33.

He was a softball umpire and enjoyed horse racing and card playing. He also liked to sing and belonged to the Golden Entertainers and Trinity Church Choir.

Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife Doris Caldwell of Brockville, son Robert Caldwell of Cornwall and three daughters, Shelly Bernier of Cole Harbour, N.S., and Debbie Forbes and Julie MacDonald, both of Brockville.

Also surviving are his mother, Dorothy Caldwell, formerly of Elm Street and now a resident of Sherwood Park Manor, six grandchildren, brother Don Buffet of Brockville and sister Dolores Greer, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father and by a brother, Allan Caldwell.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on November 21 the funeral was held, with Rev. Ron Horst, of Trinity Anglican Church, officiating. Cremation was arranged.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.

Brad Cromwell, 25

LANSDOWNE -- Brad David Cromwell, 25, was pronounced dead September 14, 2002 in Brockville.

He was born June 1, 1977 at Brockville General Hospital, the son of Dave Cromwell and the former Marjorie Andress. He was raised at Mallorytown Landing and Rockport and attended public schools in Front of Yonge and Escott, Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville and Georgian College in Barrie.

He was a painter and construction worker for Innovative Construction. Previously he worked for Andress Boat Works in Rockport, where he was known as the "water taxi guy." He worked previous summers at Grenadier Island Country Club and was well known to golfers, boaters, divers and islanders. He was always ready to help at the docks at Andress Boat Works.

He identified with the United Church and enjoyed boating, scuba diving, fishing and skiing.

Mr. Cromwell is survived by his parents, best friend and partner Tamara Mustard, their son Braden, brother Troy Cromwell of Gananoque, uncle Gary and aunt Pat Cromwell of Legal, Alta., and aunt Linda Blaedow of Edmonton, Alta., and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Elmer and Minerva Andress of Rockport and his paternal grandparents Bernie Cromwell of Brockville and Eula May Cromwell of Cornwall.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, where on September 19 the funeral was held, with Rev. Gail Conrick officiating. The eulogy was given by his cousin Wendy Merkley of Rockport. Burial followed at Rockport Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Ben DeWolfe, Cory Tyo, Tony Hunt, Chris Newman, Tim Mustard and Timothy Cromwell.

Memorial donations were directed to a trust fund for his son Braden.

William 'Bill' Morton, 59

LANSDOWNE -- Bill Morton, 59, died September 8, 2002 at Kingston General Hospital, his family at his side.

He was born William Percy Morton on March 21, 1943, in Kingston, the son of William Albert Morton and the former Mary Kazma. He attended Gananoque's Catholic school and spent most of his youth in Gananoque. In his later teens he moved to the Lansdowne area.

He married Tryntje "Tinie" Westendorp February 4, 1967, in St. Patrick Church, Lansdowne.

Mr. Morton worked at Manchester Plastics, a manufacturing plant in Gananoque, for almost 30 years, until poor health forced him to retire 11 years ago.

He loved spending time with close friends at the deer camp during hunting season, and he also enjoyed fishing, carving ducks, playing cards, flower gardening and spending time with family and friends he could joke with.

He is survived by his wife Tinie Morton, son William Edward Morton, at home, and daughter Kimberley Femia Morton, of Kingston. Also surviving are his brother Richard Morton and wife Cheryl and sister Carolyn Caird and husband Edward and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, on September 10. The funeral was held September 11 in St. Patrick Church, Lansdowne, with Father Chris Brady officiating. Burial was at St. Patrick Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Garry Prue, Larry Williams, John Funnell, Roger Running and two nephews, Richard and Ryan Morton. Honorary pallbearers were Edward Caird and David Morton.

Memorial donations were directed to the Arthritis Society.

Edith Stevenson, 90

ATHENS -- Edith Stevenson, 90, of Glen Buell, died October 30, 2002 at Sherwood Park Manor, where she had lived for the past four years.

She was born June 5, 1912, in Montreal, Que., to James William Nuttall and the former Mary Jane Edmunson. She was raised in Montreal and married James "Jim" Stevenson.

She worked as supervisor on the outpatient department of the Montreal Children's Hospital until she moved to Glen Buell, where she enjoyed growing gladiolas, which she sold at the Brockville Farmers' Market for many years. She also enjoyed both collecting antiques and painting.

Mrs. Stevenson is survived by her son James William "Bill" Stevenson of Athens and her daughter-in-law Rose-Marie Stevenson of Belleville. Also surviving are two grandsons, J. William "Bill" Stevenson and wife Kathleen "Katie" of Athens and John Stevenson of Athens and great-grandchildren Samantha, Rebecca and Patrick.

She was predeceased by her husband and three sisters, Anne Dudka of Victoria, B.C., Ethel Nuttall of Athens and Hilda Nuttall of Brockville.

A private graveside funeral was held at Glen Elbe Cemetery on November 2, with Rev. Rodney Peterson officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Judson Funeral Home, Athens.

Dora Malanka, 84

Dora Mina Malanka, 84, died October 16, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital, after a two-month illness.

She was born April 27, 1918 in Montreal to Dimitri Manzuck and the former Verona Deacon and was raised and educated in Montreal.

She married John Malanka in June 1941 in Montreal and came to live in Brockville, on Hubbell Street.

Mrs. Malanka worked in the Automatic Electric plant in Brockville and later was employed as a housekeeper at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital. She retired 24 years ago.

She identified with St. Francis Xavier Church. Her interests included sewing and knitting, and she especially enjoyed cooking for the family.

She is survived by her son Edward Malanka of Prescott and daughter Eleanor Murray and husband Michael of North Augusta, as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband John, brother John Manzuck, sisters Pearl Stechlinski and Tina Manzuck, and daughter-in-law Marg Malanka.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on October 19 the funeral was held, with Father Brian Price of St. Francis Xavier Church officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Dan Murray, Brian Bax, Michael Larocque, Douglas Malanka, Bruce Malanka and David Malanka.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
