PRESCOTT -- Eloda Connors, a Prescott resident who cherished time with her 20 grandchildren, died December 1, 2002 at age 92 at Kemptville District Hospital.
She was born August 8, 1910 at Inkerman, Ontario, to Joseph Winters and Ruth Jackson. She married Furne Connors April 2, 1931, at Inkerman.
Mrs. Connors kept her home and worked at Fetherstone. She enjoyed having more time with her family, particularly her grandchildren, after her retirement. The Connors also owned a dairy farm.
She was a member of the United Church Women and the Orange Lodge.
Mrs. Connors is survived by her sons Reg (Alice) and Furne (Dorothy) and daughters Ruth (Allan Earle) and Norma Throop (friend Bill Goldsmith), sister Bernalda Droppo, daughter-in-law Hilda Connors, son-in-law John Kingsley, 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Furne in 1996, sons Bill and Richard, daughter Margaret Kingsley, sister Luva Imrie, brother Barton Winters and great-grandson Troy John Knapp.
Visitation was December 2 at the Chris Slater Funeral Home. The funeral was in the funeral home chapel December 3, with Rev. Blair Paterson officiating. Burial followed at South Gower Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Raymond Throop, Gary Earl, Paul Connors, Dale Connors, George Knapp and Jeff Deschamvault.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and St. Paul's United Church, Prescott.
Ruth Rowswell, 86
ELGIN -- Ruth Vivian Rowswell, 86, of RR 1, Elgin, died January 15, 2003 at Kingston General Hospital. She died of complications from pneumonia after an illness of 12 days.
She was born October 29, 1916, in Elgin to Wellington Kerr and the former Jane Hughson. Raised and educated in Elgin, she married Raymond Edward Rowswell.
She worked as a hairdresser, as well as a homemaker. She belonged to the United Church in Elgin, was a member of the Women's Institute and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed all types of handiwork, gardening and pets.
Mrs. Rowswell is survived by two sons, Jim Halladay of Portland and Ed Rowswell of Elgin, and one daughter, Dianne Buethe of Elgin, as well as 12 grandchildren.
Also surviving are her sister Jean Robinson of Brockville and sister-in-law Thelma Kerr.
She was predeceased by her husband, brothers Bill Kerr and Dr. N.W. Kerr, and four sisters, Luella Glazier, Margaret Johnston, Marie Bradford and Leefa Knox.
Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, where on January 18 the funeral was held, with Rev. Harry Seeley officiating. Burial was at Halladay Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Wayne Kerr, Sinclair Knox, Bob Steacy, Brent Nontell, Sean Latreille and Lee Grant.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Ethel Barrington, 80
Ethel Barrington, a life-long area resident, died November 12, 2002 at Kingston General Hospital, after a year-and-a-half long heart-related illness. She was 80.
She was born March 15, 1922, in Brockville to Lloyd Mott and Ellen Boyd of Toledo. She was raised in the village and educated at Toledo Public School.
Mrs. Barrington lived in the Toledo, Brockville and Algonquin areas throughout her life.
She married Lawrence Barrington in North Augusta in May 1969.
Mrs. Barrington lived near Brockville at the time of her death and had been retired for 20 years after working at the former Queen's Grant Motel and Rollit Products. She was affiliated with the United Church.
She enjoyed spending time with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter, crocheting items including afghans and tablecloths and was a fine cook.
Mrs. Barrington is survived by her husband, Lawrence, daughter Connie Carr of Kingston, granddaughter Debbie Hutchinson (Brian) and great-granddaughter Jeni Hutchinson. Other survivors are step-children Bruce Barrington (Jeannie), Lorne Barrington (Lorna), Dianne Anderson (John), Brenda Weaver (Brian), Susan Eaton (Brian) and Jeff Barrington (Rhonda).
She was predeceased by her parents, son-in-law Garnet Carr, brother Ronald Mott, sisters Keitha Findlay and Irma Vincent.
Visitation was November 14 at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville. A private service was held November 15 at the funeral home chapel with Linda Winton, of Algonquin United Church, officiating. Interment is at Lehigh Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Keith Mott, Earl Mott, Bob Mott, Keith Findlay, Jim Holmes and Brian Hutchinson. Honorary pallbearers were Elson Ludlow, Raymond Chant, Ray Edwards and Gordon Cole.
Memorial donations were directed to Kingston General Hospital.
Reg Read, 63
Reginald Ronald Read, the longtime treasurer of the Brockville Fish and Game Club and an avid hunter and target shooter, died December 9, 2002 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, age 63.
He had been ill with prostate cancer for two years.
Known as Reg, he born at Brockville General Hospital November 28, 1939, to Earl Read and Elva Perkins, raised in Delta and attended public school in Delta and high school in Lyndhurst.
Mr. Read married Elaine Collison in May 1957 at the Brockville Tabernacle. The couple lived in Brockville, except for the years they lived in North Augusta, from 1969 to 1977.
Mr. Read was a machinist and worked at Rehau Industries in Prescott, Black and Decker, and finally Hewitts Brockville for more than 25 years. He retired in 1999.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was the treasurer of the fish and game club for more than 20 years and enjoyed helping out at events in the Brockville area, taking part in target-shooting competitions and hunting.
Mr. Read is survived by his wife, Elaine, sons Rick (June) of Mississauga and Tim (Jackie) of Brockville and daughter Nancy McLarry (Shawn) of Smiths Falls, grandchildren Marty, Reanna, Dallas, Justin, Jake, Corey and Elaina. Also surviving are sisters Carol Day (Jim) of Phillipsville and Suzy Church (Don) of Brockville, mother-in-law Ruby Casselman and sister-in-law Marjorie Collison.
He was predeceased by his parents, father-in-law Earl Collison and brother-in-law Clayt Collison.
The funeral was December 12 at the Barclay Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ian Kelsey, assisted by Pastor Terry McAllister of the Open Door Fellowship. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Micky Collison, Adam VanDusen, Clint Day, Martin Somerville, Gary Box and John Chisamore. Honourary pallbearers were John Cooper, George Greer, James Dobson, Colin Hubbs, Larry Foss and Ken Young.
The eulogy was given by Gordon Chisamore and remarks were made by grandson Marty McLarry. Solo Beyond the Sunset was sung by Handy Nevers.
Donna Amell, 57
Donna Elaine Amell, 57 of Prescott, died December 11, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born June 5, 1945, in Brockville to Stanley Farley and the former Lenora Bradley, and was raised in the Prescott area.
On June 6, 1987, she married Wayne Amell in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott.
She was a housewife and enjoyed gardening, her husband and her dog Toby. She identified with St. Andrew's church and was also active in supporting her husband in the Masonic Lodge in Prescott.
She is survived by her husband, sons Todd and Shawn of Smiths Falls and stepson Gene of Ottawa, daughter Cathy of Oshawa and three step-daughters, Christine of Pittston, Karen of Brockville and Jessie of Prescott, as well as 15 grandchildren.
Also surviving are her brothers Earl, Charles, Fred and Hardford Farley, sisters Leona Countryman, Audrey Bilow, Pauline Tucker, Mary Malone and Lorraine Kerr and several nieces and nephews, as well as mother-in-law Jessie Amell, brother-in-law Morton Amell and wife Louise, and sister-in-law Bonnie Kearney and husband Des of Brockville.
She was predeceased by her parents and a brother-in-law Neil Amell.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on December 14 the funeral was held, with Rev. David Jones, of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. During the service, Gene Amell and Lorraine Kerr spoke and Karen Amell sang a solo. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, near Ingleside, at a later date.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
