Jeannette Mary Lanctot, 88, of RR 1, Brockville, died January 31, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born December 16, 1914 in Montreal to Joseph Adolf Robidoux and the former Bertha Chaput. She was raised in Montreal and educated in Granby, Que.
She married Ernest Henry Lanctot on September 3, 1945 in Montreal and moved to Brockville in 1946. She was a housewife and mother, and identified with St. Francis Xavier Church.
Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her special interests. She also loved the outdoors and gardening and was an avid bingo player.
Mrs. Lanctot is survived by her sons Paul of RR 1, Prescott, and Jonathan of Calgary, and her daughter Theresa of RR 1, Brockville, as well as three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her brother Leopold Robidoux of Laprairie, Que., and three sisters, Margot of Boucherville, Cecile of Candiac, and Laurette of St-Ours, all in Quebec, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Ernest, her parents and several brothers and sisters.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral was held February 5. Father Brian Price of St. Francis Xavier Church officiated and burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Jonathan Mahonne, Dale Lawson, Joseph Lanctot and Shawn Pettem.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Ed Wilkins, 55
Former Brockvillian Edward "Ed" Eber Wilkins, 55, a 25-year resident of Hinton, Alberta, died February 11, 2003 at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.
He was born March 25, 1947 in Cornwall to Alfred Wilkins and the former Vivian Moffitt. His early childhood was spent in Cornwall. In 1957 he came with his family to Brockville and when he was 18 he joined the Canadian Navy and served three years. After that he moved to Mississauga.
When he was about 30, he moved to Hinton, Alta., and worked as a heavy machine operator in the coal mines there.
On August 26, 1993 he married Leanna Rudrum in Bentley, Alta.
After leaving the coal mines four years ago, he worked briefly at Canadian Tire and more recently at The Brick. He also had a side business designing and making neon signs.
Mr. Wilkins enjoyed scuba diving, was interested in restoring old cars, enjoyed motorcycling and did weightlifting.
He is survived by his wife Leanna Wilkins and two brothers, Barry Wilkins and wife Yvonne and Larry Wilkins, all of Brockville, as well as five nieces/nephews. He is also survived by his mother, Vivian Livingstone, of Brockville.
He was predeceased by his father.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville on February 26, just before a memorial service at 2 p.m., led by Pastor Randy Hopkins, of Centennial Road Standard Church, a friend of the family. At the same time as the Brockville service was held, another memorial service was being held in Hinton, Alta., with many close friends attending. Burial will be in the family plot in Oakland Cemetery, Brockville.
Memorial donations were directed to the Parkinson's Foundation.
Andy Kovacs, 66
Endre "Andy" Sandor Kovacs, 66, owner of the Executive Taxi service in Brockville, died of heart failure at his home on January 26, 2003.
He was born in Budapest, Hungary, on September 30, 1936, the son of Endre Kovacs.
He came to Canada on May 8, 1957, and settled in Brockville that same month. He lived in Mallorytown and later Brockville.
He held numerous jobs over the years, working at Selkirk Metalbestos and Black and Decker before starting his own business, Andy's Photo, and later Andy's TV Rental. He worked at the Ontario Hospital (Brockville Psychiatric Hospital) and then City Cab. He was owner and operator of Executive Taxi at the time of his death.
He played and coached soccer for several years, was fond of animals, including his dog Smokey, and enjoyed dancing, traveling and being with his family.
He is survived by his son Endre "Andy" Kovacs and wife Judy of Brockville and daughter Ottilia "Muci" and friend Steven of Addison, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are his sister Ilona Jozsef and husband Toth of Budapest and a niece or nephew.
He was predeceased by his parents and three grandchildren.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on January 31 the funeral was held, with Rev. Jean Baker of Christ United Church, Lyn, officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery, west of the city.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Rose Fawcett, 53
IROQUOIS -- Rosemary "Rose" Fawcett, 53, former co-owner of the Rise 'n' Shine Restaurant in Iroquois, died March 7, 2003 at her home at RR 2, Iroquois.
She was born August 22, 1949 in Cornwall General Hospital, the daughter of Kenneth Shaver and the former Mary Jean Sanderson. She was raised on a farm in North Valley (Osnabruck Township), where she was a tomboy who preferred working outside to doing housework. She attended Grades 1 to 4 at North Valley Public School, Grades 5 to 8 at Newington Public School and then high school at Osnabruck District High School.
Later she met George Fawcett and they were married at her parents' farm on February 3, 1969. After their marriage, they lived at Hulbert for two years before moving to the farm at RR 2, Iroquois, where they lived the past 32 years.
In addition to being a mother to her step-daughter Bonnie and her son Glen, she worked at the RCA electronics plant in Prescott.
In 1988, she and her husband purchased the Rise 'n' Shine Restaurant in Iroquois worked together at the business for almost 15 years, until illness forced her to stop working in October 2002.
In her spare time she liked working at home on the farm, fishing with her brother Alan, gardening, listening to country and western music, singing, playing guitar, and enjoying family gatherings for barbecues and other events.
She treasured the time spent with her daughter-in-law Leisa doing crafts, painting and visiting. She loved playing with her grandsons Spencer and Trent, who lived next door.
She touched many lives with her generosity, cheery smile and positive attitude.
Mrs. Fawcett is survived by her husband George, son Glen and wife Leisa of RR 2, Iroquois, and step-daughter Bonnie Whitteker of Mississauga, as well as grandchildren Spencer and Trent Fawcett and Alexis, Ryan and Jenny Whitteker.
Also surviving are two sisters, Anne Wereley and husband Bob of Lunenburg, N.S., and Margaret Shepherd and husband Murray of Napanee, and three brothers, Garth Shaver and wife Margit of Thunder Bay, Manley Shaver of Winnipeg and Alan Shaver and wife Cathy of Newington, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents and a nephew, Dean Shepherd.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, where on March 11 the funeral was held, with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating. Cremation followed the service.
The pallbearers were Jim Lewis, Basil Young, Lloyd McMillan, Lorne Sutherland, Jamie Wereley, Alan Shaver and Mark Shepherd.
Memorial donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre will be gratefully acknowedged by the family.
Kay Selleck, 84
PRESCOTT -- Kay Selleck, 84, died February 16, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born Kathaleen Winnifred Gilmer September 3, 1918, in Matilda Township to Samuel Gilmer and the former Etta Ann Thompson.
On December 9, 1936, she married Garnet Alton Selleck in Edwardsburgh Township.
She was a line worker at Prescott Paper Products until retiring.
Mrs. Selleck's main interests were her church, family and friends. She loved people, doing things with the family, visiting friends who were sick or shut in, and going out to dinner with family and friends.
She enjoyed her work with St. Paul's United Church in Prescott, as well as her coffee club and exercise group.
She is survived by her son Wayne and wife Margaret, granddaughter Penny Lee Arthurs and husband Scott, and great-grandchildren Hayley, Tobia, Chelsey and Hannah.
Also surviving are her sisters Evelyn Bowbeer, Lila Gilmer, Freda Gilmer, Hilda Langstaff and husband Ray, brother Elton Gilmer and wife Jean, sisters-in-law Kay and Dorothy Gilmer, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on February 18. The funeral was held the next day in St. Paul's United Church, with Rev. Blair Paterson, Rev. John Reynolds and Pastor David Bowbeer (her nephew) officiating. Eulogies were given by granddaughters Chelsey and Haley Arthurs and David Bowbeer. Burial will be at South Gower Cemetery in the spring.
The pallbearers were Tobi Arthurs, Carl Bowbeer, Rick Langstaff, Doug Bowbeer, Rodney Langstaff and Chris Hanes.
Memorial donations were directed to St. Paul's Roof Fund.
