Marcia Renwick, 89

Marcia Renwick, 89, died February 9, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital after a massive stroke.

She was born near Fairfield (RR 5, north of Brockville) on March 1, 1913, to Amos Throop and the former Edith Francis. She married Clemens Renwick on July 7, 1934, in Ogdensburg, N.Y., and lived in the Brockville area and later in Brockville itself.

A quiet person, her main interests were her family, home, garden and flowers. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96, the Diamond Jubilee Club and the Loyal True Blue Lodge No. 475. She also loved to play cards.

She is survived by her daughter Donna Johnson and husband Don of Charleston Lake; three grandchildren, Debbie La Barge and husband Wayne of Kingston, Dave Johnson and wife Lisa of Lyn, Dianne Johnson and friend Harold of Charleston Lake; and great-grandchildren Tori, Christi and Tim La Barge and Brian, Cody, Kirsten and Mitchel Johnson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Clemens, her parents, brothers Alden, Clifford and Jim Throop and sisters Anna Billings and Myrtle Brown.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral was held on February 12, with Rev. Michael Bary of Holy Trinity Church, Oak Leaf, officiating. Granddaughter Dianne Johnson gave the eulogy. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Cody, Brian and Stephen Johnson, Tori, Christi and Tim La Barge and Peter Kelly.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Sidney Spracklin, 81

Sidney Prescott Spracklin, 81, a retired tool and die maker, died February 28, 2003 at St. Lawrence Lodge after an illness lasting a year.

He was born in Charlottetown, Newfoundland on May 18, 1921, the son of Lockyer Spracklin and the former Blanche Bailey. His father died of tuberculosis and in 1922 his mother came to Toledo with her two sons and earned a living as a housekeeper.

When he was 16 years old, he was blinded in one eye after an accident with a rifle. Because of his partial blindness he did not serve in the Second World War.

He married Loretta Amelia Fabbri on May 18, 1945 in Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville.

For 47 years he worked as a tool and die maker, first at Phillips Cables and later at Automatic Electric (Microtel). He was never late, never sick and never missed a day of work. His work was excellent and precise, despite the lack of sight in one eye. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Spracklin was a partner with his brother Vince in a business that manufactured various types of plastic signs and accessories. He also had a home workshop with a wood and metal lathe and drill press, all of which he had made himself. He made his own boat, among other things.

He loved boating and fishing, both on the St. Lawrence and at Charleston Lake, where he was a member of the Olsena Fishing Club.

He identified with Trinity Anglican Church. A quiet man with a dry sense of humour, he most enjoyed being home with his family.

He is survived by his wife Loretta Spracklin and two children, Richard Sidney Spracklin and wife Darlene of Prince Rupert, B.C., and Sherrie-Lynn Spracklin and husband Bob Cowan of Brockville. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Savonna Spracklin at the University of Edmonton, Sidney Spracklin of Prince Rupert, B.C., and John Thomas Hook (son of Sherrie Spracklin) and wife Lynn of Vancouver, B.C.

He was predeceased by his father, Lockyer Spracklin, and his mother, Blanche Black, and his brother, Robert Vincent Spracklin.

A private service was held March 5 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland, with Rev. Ron Horst, of Trinity Anglican Church officiating.

Memorial donations were directed to the Parkinson's Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, made arrangements.

Doris Cooke, 86

She and her husband returned to Brockville and retired in 1979.

Mrs. Cooke was an active member of the BGH Nurses Alumnae and very much enjoyed the monthly luncheons and social congeniality of her fellow nurses. She was a member of the Brockville Country Club and enjoyed the associated bridge group.

She and her husband were active members of St. Peter's Anglican Church in Brockville. She had a sunny disposition, ready smile and kind word for all.

With her husband, Bill, she travelled across Canada. Later in life she enjoyed several Caribbean cruises with her friend Joyce Saunders.

Mrs. Cooke was predeceased by her husband in November 1996 and by a daughter in infancy, Wendy Elaine Cooke. She was also predeceased by a sister, Gladys Goodbody, and two brothers, Reynolds and Borden Goodbody.

She is survived by her sister Joan Hollingsworth of Delta and two brothers, Pete Goodbody of Lyndhurst and Osborne Goodbody of Delta, and her friends of more than 40 years, Donald and Barbara Hobson of Brockville and Joyce Saunders of Halifax, N.S.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville. The funeral was held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Brockville, on December 28 with Canon Bev Lindsay officiating. Burial followed in the Cooke family plot in Old St. Peter's Cemetery. Members of the Brockville General Hospital Nurses Alumnae formed an honour guard at the church.

The pallbearers were nephew Paul Hollingsworth, cousins Richard Eyre and Harley Eyre and friends Wayne King, Ken Tuckwood and Kyle Karasiuk.

Memorial donations to St. Peter's Altar Guild will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
