Flora Tarrant, 93

Flora Mary Tarrant, 93, a resident of Sherwood Park Manor from March 2001, died of congestive heart failure May 18, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital after a three-day illness.

Born April 26, 1910 in Latuque, Quebec, she was the daughter of Liguori Tremblay and the former Mary Mercier. Her mother died from complications of childbirth two years later, and Flora was then raised by her grandmother, Caroline Beads, and then by her mother's sister, Eliza Mercier Thompson.

She grew up in the Latuque area, on a farm on the road to Waygamack and later at Fitzpatrick station. Her Thompson cousins were like brothers and sisters to her. She was educated by nuns in a convent.

She married Lawrence Earnest Tarrant (1896-1964) in December 1939 in Latuque, where they lived for many years. Four years after her husband's death, she and her youngest son, Gordon, moved to Brockville.

Mrs. Tarrant worked over the years as a maid/housekeeper, store clerk, receptionist, switchboard operator and homemaker. She retired in 1975.

She identified with the Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Rebekahs and of the ladies auxiliary of the local Royal Canadian Legion branch. She also belonged to various bowling leagues and especially loved five-pin bowling; she was a championship bowler and often had a high average.

She loved nature and animals, particularly cats. She also liked to hunt, fish and play bridge.

Mrs. Tarrant is survived by two of her four children, Gordon Tarrant of Brockville and Linda Crooks and husband Tim of Lumsden, Sask., as well as five grandchildren, a daughter-in-law Barbara Tarrant of Westmount, Que., and four nieces/nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Lloyd William James Tarrant in September 1991 and Gerald Earl Tarrant in April 1992.

A graveside service was held May 27 at the family plot in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, with Father Brian Price officiating.

Beverly McManus, 55

ATHENS -- Beverly Mae McManus, 55, of RR 1, Delta, died of cancer on Mother's Day, May 11, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born February 22, 1948 to Russell and Helena Covey of Athens, the eldest of eight siblings.

She attended Pineview Public School and then went on to Athens District High School. She also attended St. Lawrence College in Brockville, where she earned a diploma as a certified general accountant.

She worked at several plants in the Brockville area, such as Automatic Electric (Sanmina-SCI), CompAS, Phillips Cables and most recently Shorewood Packaging.

She married Don McManus on June 29, 1968 at Athens United Church and had three children.

A lively, encouraging person, she enjoyed painting, reading, traveling, camping, knitting and anything that had to do with her children.

She is survived by her husband Don McManus, sons Robert and friend Tessa of Brockville and Randy and wife Dawn of Athens, daughter Ronda Seeley and husband Greg of Brockville, and two grandchildren Alyssa and Tristan, as well as many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on May 14 a memorial service was held, with Rev. Rodney Peterson officating. Eulogies were given by her brother Joe Covey and lifelong friends Elsie Flynn. Burial followed at Greenbank Cemetery in Rocksprings.

The pallbearers were Tammy Herbison, David McManus, Michael Covey, Jason McManus, Luke Covey, Benjamin Mack, Matthew Covey and David Covey.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Margaret Cater, 89

PRESCOTT -- Margaret Cater, 89, retired clerk, died May 19, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born April 13, 1914 at Montreal, Quebec, to Ernest Jones and the former Margaret Newell.

She worked as a clerk at the Prescott Journal, the town's weekly newspaper.

Mrs. Cater was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Cater, and her sister, Christine Phinney.

She is survived by her son Edward "Ted" Cater and wife Gail of Cardinal, granddaughter Elyse Cater, dear friend Mary Typhair of Prescott, one niece, four nephews, several cousins and two sisters-in-law.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, before a memorial service held in the chapel there on May 23. Rev. Gerry Ring officiated.

Cremation was arranged at the Cataraqui Crematorium.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Glenn McDonald, 62

Glenn McDonald, 62 of Smiths Falls, formerly of Brockville and Mallorytown, died suddenly of a heart attack on April 28, 2003 at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital.

He was born William Joseph Glenn McDonald on December 1, 1940 in Mallorytown, to John Maxwell and the former Sadie Leeder. He moved to Brockville when a young child, graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute and completed an automotive mechanic apprenticeship in Toronto and Brockville.

He owned and operated Glenn's BA, Glenn's Texaco and Glenn's Gulf, then was service manager at Rockway Pontiac and Buick dealership, Brockville. After that he was general manager of the Brockville Truck Centre and later was service manager at Brockville's Canadian Tire store. At the time of his death, he was employed at Mike Fair Chev Olds in Smiths Falls.

He married Ann C. Healey on September 28, 1968 in St. Philip Neri Church in Toledo.

He belonged to St. Francis Xavier and St. John Bosco parishes in Brockville and finally St. Francis de Sales parish in Smiths Falls. He was involved with the Knights of Columbus in the past.

He ran for municipal office and became a councillor in the Township of Front of Yonge in January 1977. He continued as a councillor until November 30, 1980 and became deputy reeve on December 1, 1980, holding that office until November 30, 1985. He was a member of United Counties Council from 1980 to 1985.

Mr. McDonald was well known as a mechanic, tow truck operator, hockey and baseball coach and sponsor.

He enjoyed his workshop, woodworking and wood crafts. He took a keen interest in his own family, grandchildren and pet dachshund.

He is survived by his wife, Ann McDonald; two sons, John Glenn McDonald and wife Stacey of Brockville and Craig Thomas McDonald of Etobicoke; two grandchildren, Danielle Catherine McDonald and Maxwell William McDonald; three sisters, Anne Shaw and husband Ted of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary McDonald of Concord, Calif., and Irene Allen and husband Steve of Kenmore, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are several brothers and sisters-in-law, first cousins, mother-in-law Eliza Healey of Toledo, and aunts Angela Flood of Athens and Hilda Leeder of Brockville.

He was predeceased by both his parents and a brother Raymond in infancy.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on April 30. The funeral was held May 1 at St. Philip Neri Church, Toledo, with Fathers Chisholm and Amato officiating. Burial followed at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Toledo.

The pallbearers were Don Jordan, Edward Muldoon, Allan Armstrong, John Shaw, Tom Flood and Jim Leeder.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Vernon Pashnicki, 45

Vernon John "Vern" Pashnicki, 45, of Lyn, died of cancer May 10, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital, after an illness of seven months.

He was born April 30, 1958, in Gimli, Manitoba, to Walter Pashnicki and his wife, the former Angeline Dankochik. During his childhood he lived in Gimli, Cobourg and Kingston. He came to Brockville in 1968 with his family, attended public school in Brockville and then Thousand Islands Secondary School. He also attended Guelph and Carleton universities.

When Procter and Gamble opened its plant in Brockville, he was one of the first people hired. He was employed as a technician there for 24 years.

Always a sports fan, he played hockey in his youth and was on a bowling team. He enjoyed playing billiards and going fishing as an adult, and he followed many team sports, either watching on television or attending games.

Above all, he loved to golf and had enjoyed the sport for 30 years. He was a member of the Highland Golf Club and the Brockville Country Club.

Mr. Pashnicki is survived by his parents, Walter and Angeline Pashnicki; Susan Miller (nee Geggie), his common-law spouse, with whom he lived in Lyn for the past 20 years; stepson Richard of Ottawa and stepdaughter Barbara of Ottawa.

Also surviving are his brother Bradley Pashnicki of Toronto and sister Wendy Nolan of Brockville, grandmother Jenny Dann of Gimli, Man., aunts and uncles Bonnie and Randy Dann of Gimli and Helen and Joe Pashnicki of Winnipeg, aunt Zenia Deczun of Toronto and Susan Miller's mother Mabel Geggie and family, as well as two nieces/nephews and numerous cousins in Manitoba.

He was predeceased by his grandfather John Dann (of Gimli), uncles Mike Pashnicki (of Winnipeg) and Ted Deczun (of Toronto), and grandparents John and Ann Pashnicki (of Gimli).

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on May 13. The funeral was held May 14 at St. John Bosco Church, with Father John Hibbard officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Gary and Brian Cherniak, Klyde Brayton, Brad Peters, Bill Reid, John Ackerman and Mark Dann.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
