Lillian Rose Kalenik, 65, died August 8, 2003, at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born March 2, 1938, in Brockville to Fred Kalenik and the former Leda Lapuka.
She lived with her parents for 60 years and did her share of work at home. For years she also worked as a salesperson and as a waitress at Diana Sweets.
She loved long walks, playing games (especially cards), doing puzzles, traveling and visiting with her parents and hostessing at home and the cottage. She loved wearing beautiful clothes and jewelry and never had to be talked into going shopping. She was fond of animals and they liked her.
As a result of her first stroke, she was unable to walk any more and moved to Sherwood Park Manor nursing home. She telephoned her parents several times a day and greatly enjoyed those times when she could come home for a visit or go for an outing.
She loved to laugh and made other people laugh. She welcomed people with a big smile and a joyful greeting. Even when she was sick, she had a smile for everyone who came to visit and prided herself on being able to remember most people's names.
Miss Kalenik is survived by her parents, Fred and Leda Kalenik, and close family friends Anna, Catherine and Elizabeth Alexander and Steve U'Ren.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 10 the funeral was held, with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett, of Wall Street United Church, officiating. Anna Alexander gave the eulogy. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Joe Semtchenko, John Brouwer, Earl Nielsen, Ron Wardle, Scott McKibbon, Brian U'Ren and Steve U'Ren.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Jack Mullins, 72
Jack Mullins, 72, veteran of the Korean war, died August 16, 2003 at Providence Continuing Care Centre's St. Vincent site after a three-month illness with cancer.
He was born May 8, 1931, in Danville, West Virginia, to William Mullins and the former Rachel Slone. He was raised and educated in West Virginia. He joined the U.S. Army in 1948, served in the Korean War and was discharged in 1952.
In the 1950s he came to Brockville to live. He worked for Maitland Charts until 1976, then at the Warner-Lambert plant in Brockville until his retirement 12 years ago.
Mr. Mullins identified with the Baptist church. He enjoyed being at his cottage at Butternut Bay, playing golf and euchre and driving his antique automobile.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Coates, whom he married in 1982 in St. John Bosco Church; stepsons Everett "Sonnie" Cuming and wife Marilynne and David Coates; stepdaughter Yvette Canning and husband Norm; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sisters-in-law Margaret Jackson, Jean Kerr and husband Charles and Eileen Poirier; brother-in-law Bill Coates and wife Kathy; special niece Cathy Mullen and husband Brian and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen Dalgleish; four brothers, Reed, Freddie, Jim and David; and sisters Eunice and Yani; and his parents.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 19 the funeral was held, with Rev. Roland Glendinning officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
The pallbearers were Curtis and Casey Coates, Jason Mullen, and Gary, Roger and Jeff Elliott. The honorary pallbearers were Bear Boys Hunt Club members Bob Jackson, Al Good, Steve Lockett, Terry White and Shawn Elliott.
Memorial donations were directed to the Lung Association and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Helen Kirkland, 91
Helen May Kirkland, 90, died at St. Lawrence Lodge on August 20, 2003.
She was born in Hammond, N.Y., on July 12, 1912. Shortly afterward, she moved with her parents to Row's Corners, where she was raised and attended school.
Her father, Albert Tanney, was from the Algonquin area and her mother, Mary Ann Vout, was from Augusta Township.
She married Arden Kirkland in Brockville in 1928 and lived for many years at Row's Corners and in later years at Bethel.
Her life work was as a housewife and homemaker. She enjoyed maintaining her home, preparing meals, babysitting the grandchildren, visiting family, friends and neighbours. She also enjoyed family picnics, berry picking and drives in the country.
She is survived by four of her five children, Joan Nowlan and husband Lorne, Rhea Good and husband Al, Ken Kirkland and wife Barbara, and Sharon Gardiner and husband Dale, as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Arden; son William; four brothers, Gordon, Garnet, Herbie and Arthur Tanney; and seven sisters, Eva, Lulu, Evelyn, Dorothy, Edith, Leona and Peggy.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 23 a celebration of her life was led by Rev. Stewart Froese. Burial followed at Read's Cemetery at Bethel.
The pallbearers were grandchildren Brenda Morash, Rodney Nowlan, Paul Kirkland, Dale Kirkland, Kerry Gardiner, Stephanie Gardiner, Angel Kirkland and Darren Kirkland.
Memorial donations to Read's Cemetery and St. Lawrence Lodge were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Anna Shipman-Liston, 88
Anna Mary Stella Shipman-Liston, 88, a retired waitress, died August 17, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital following a stroke four days earlier. She was a resident of St. Lawrence Lodge.
She was born June 29, 1915, in Tamworth, Ont., to Andrew Burns and the former Theresa Mathoney. She attended Cedar HIll Public School and Tamworth High School.
She married Leo Liston on February 15, 1939, in Ernestville, near Tamworth. They lived in Morrisburg initially, then came to Brockville about 50 years ago.
For many years she worked as a waitress at the Skyline Hotel (now Royal Brock) and the Happy Garden Restaurant, retiring 28 years ago.
After the death of her first husband, she married Roosevelt "Rosy" Shipman on December 12, 1981, in St. Francis Xavier Church, Brockville.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier and belonged to its Catholic Women's League. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.
Five of her six children survive: Michael Liston and wife Joanne of Brockville, Frank Liston and wife Carolyn of Rocksprings, Marlene Snell and husband Ted of Belleville, Joan Lang and husband Norm of Toronto and Cathy Peer and spouse John Roddick of Mallorytown.
Also surviving are seven stepchildren, 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by both husbands, daughter Theresa Welter, two brothers and three sisters.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on August 19. The funeral was held August 20 in St. Francis Xavier Church, Brockville, with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, just west of the city.
The pallbearers were Randy and Ryan Liston, Paul Osborne, Fernando Pecheco, Leonard Murphy and Gerard Burns.
Memorial donations were directed to the Parkinson Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Phyllis Bond, 71
ELGIN -- Retired registered nurse Phyllis Bond, 71, of RR 1, Delta, died from a heart attack in Edmonton, Alberta, September 19, 2003. She had been ill for one and a half months.
She was born Addie Phyllis Butcher on January 16, 1932 in Jasper, Ont., to James and Lena Butcher. She attended Hutton Public School and high school in Smiths Falls.
She graduated from Brockville Psychiatric Hospital as a registered nurse September 13, 1953, and worked as a registered nurse at BPH until her retirement 23 years ago.
On July 11, 1952 she married Henry Bond in Newboro. She identified with Delta United Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, holding the position of worthy matron in 1976-77.
Mrs. Bond also served as a member of the board of the Country Roads Community Health Centre in Portland and as a member of the Diabetes Association.
She enjoyed traveling and playing cards.
Mrs. Bond is survived by her husband Henry, sons James of Hythe, Alta., and Eric of Delta, and daughter Shirley of Milton, Ont., as well as seven grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters Hilda Westerman of Rocksprings and Bella Halliwell of Blenheim.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother George Butcher and sister Maude Porter.
The funeral was held September 27 at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, with Rev. Kathryn Powell and Rev. Bruce Ross officiating. Burial followed at the Halladay Cemetery in Elgin.
The pallbearers were Michael Bond, David and Grant Ross, Leonard Vincent, Paul Henderson and Gerald Phillips.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
