ATHENS -- Evelyn Mary Sheffield, 81, of RR 2, Lyn, a retired farmer, died October 6, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born in Front of Yonge Township on November 26, 1921, to Harry Leeder and the former Hazel Davis. She was raised and educated at McIntosh Mills and Mallorytown.
She married Richard Albert "Dick" Sheffield on September 9, 1939, in St. Luke's church, Ballycanoe. After living in Ballycanoe and Athens, she and her husband moved to a farm on Kilkenny Road in 1949.
In addition to raising a family and helping on the farm, she belonged to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Lyn, as well as the church's Anglican Church Women group.
Mrs. Sheffield also served as a school trustee for a number of years.
She enjoyed baking, quilting, handwork and raising chickens, ducks, turkeys and guinea hens.
In later life she travelled with her husband Dick across North America and enjoyed her great-grandchildren. She loved living at her farm house and did so until a week before her death. As recently as two weeks before her death, she attended Richmond Fair with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Dick and a sister Peggy Hall.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhena Charland and husband Doug of Ottawa, Elva Douglas and husband Bill of RR 4, Brockville, and Wanda Munro and husband Tom of Mallorytown.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Shawn Charland of Ottawa, Brent Charland and wife Teresa of Merrickville, Kim Charland and wife Sandra of Ottawa, and Scott Charland of Ottawa; four great-grandchildren, Kate, Grace, Sabina and Emily; and several nieces/nephews.
She is survived as well by two sisters, Velma Turner and her husband Joe and Berneta Turner and her husband Jay, all of Gananoque, and six brothers, Russell Leeder of Delta, Ted Leeder and wife Audrey of Winnipeg, Dave Leeder and wife Jane of Junetown, Everett Leeder and wife Lenora of Frankville, Bordie Leeder and Judy of RR 1, Athens, and Grant Leeder and wife Dorothy of Kemptville.
Also surviving are four sisters-in-law, Kate Simes of Brockville, Geraldine Reed and Eileen Sheffield, both of Athens, and Dorothy Lake and husband Wilson of Athens.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on October 10 the funeral was held. Rev. Gloria Kostyk, of St. John the Baptist Church, Lyn, officiated. Burial took place the following day at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
Ray Somerville
SPENCERVILLE -- Ray Somerville, 78, of RR 5, Spencerville, died suddenly October 19, 2003 at Kemptville District Hospital.
He was born in South Gower Township on October 10, 1925, the eldest son of Ernest Somerville and the former Bella Logan. He was raised on the family farm on Buckwheat Road.
He enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews play ball and spent a lot of time splitting and piling wood for neighbours.
He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Ross, and two sisters, Joan and Marilyn in infancy.
He is survived by his brothers Glen and wife Velma of Spencerville and Keith and wife Joan of Brockville, sister Gail Gill of Prescott and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held on October 21, at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, with Rev. Pat Swann officiating. Burial followed at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery, Spencerville.
The pallbearers were neighbours and friends, Sean Lawless, Ron Johnston, Wayne Boisvenue, Keith Woods, Lee Goldsmith and John Grant.
Memorial donations were directed to Kemptville District Hospital Tribute Fund.
Dorothy Ramsay, 62
ATHENS -- Dorothy Gladys Mary Ramsay, 62, of Brockville died October 30, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born September 16, 1941 in Lancashire, England, to Ernest Nicholson and the former Mary Evelyn Dixon. She grew up in Lancashire and came to Canada in April 1958, living first in Ottawa, where she met Lawrence Ramsay, was was in the military. They were married on August 5, 1961 in Smiths Falls.
Over the years she lived in communities to which her husband was posted, usually for two to five years, starting with Clinton, Sudbury, Kapuskasing and Faymount, all in Ontario; Alsask, Sask., on the Alberta border; North Bay for 15 years, and Kingston, Ont.
Then she and her husband lived in the Lake District, in England, for 10 months before moving to Athens, where they lived for four years, and finally to Brockville recently.
She worked as a secretary in the public service in North Bay (for the department of national defence) and was also a secretary in Kingston, retiring in 1996.
Besides her family, her interests included travel, genealogy and knitting.
Mrs. Ramsay is survived by her mother, Mary Evelyn Nicholson; husband Lawrence Ramsay; sons Larry Ramsay Jr. and wife Pamela of Trinidad and Colin Ramsay and wife Michelle of North Bay; daughter Debbie Gabriel and husband Michael of Montreal; and three grandchildren, Jessica, Sara and Joshua.
Also surviving are her brother, Henry "Harry" Nicholson and wife Joan of Cardinal and three sisters, Kathy Eagle and husband Gary of RR 2, Brockville, Joyce Nicholson and husband John of England and Nancy Sheffield and husband Greg of Smiths Falls, as well as 15 nieces/nephews.
She was predeceased by her father.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, before the funeral on November 2 in the Judson Chapel. Rev. Jack Bradley officiated. Cremation was arranged and burial will be in England at a later date.
Memorial donations were directed to Maple View Lodge and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Catherine Bollinger, 54
PRESCOTT -- Catherine Mary Bollinger, 54, died September 29, 2003 at her home in Prescott after a brief illness.
She was born September 7, 1949, in Toronto, to Anthony Bollinger and the former Beatrice Caden. She attended Ursuline High School in Regina, Saskatchewan and George Brown College in Toronto.
She worked for Sasktel in Regina from 1966 to 1969. In 1971 she started at General Electric in Barrie and was then transferred to Black and Decker in Brockville in 1986. She took an early retirement in 1994 from Black and Decker.
In the spring of 1994 she began working in Prescott part time at the Mr. Mugs coffee shop and at Wellington House retirement home. She eventually became the manager at Mr. Mugs. In 1996 she worked at the Mayfield Retirement Residence for a year and then, employed by Brown's Vending, she worked at DuPont at Maitland and South Grenville District High School in Prescott.
In 2001 she began working at Grenville Christian College, where she enjoyed the faith-based community atmosphere.
Her main interests were her family, gardening and genealogy. While researching her genealogy, she contacted lost relatives and enjoyed maintaining online relationships with them.
Ms. Bollinger is survived by her parents; her husband, Steven Street; two sons, Patrick Romat and wife Teena and Michael Romat; grandchildren Savannah, Tanner and Travis; sisters Denise and Loretta; nieces Norma Jean and Claire and their families, and nephew Will Street.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on October 1. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, Prescott, on October 2, with Father John Appelman officiating.
Rev. Steven Shay, of Grenville Christian College, delivered words of remembrance. A committal service followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.
The active pallbearers were James Theaker, Ken Sturman, Walter Gorecki, Dennis Marchand, Chuck Street and Stephen Arbeau. The honorary pallbearer was Jaime Sturman.
Lloyd Levere, 81
Lloyd Levere, 81, retired DuPont employee, died August 3, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital.
He was born February 12, 1922, in Cardinal to Arthur Levere and the former Marjorie Timmins. He grew up in Merrickville and worked at the cheese factories in Kemptville and Pembroke.
After graduating from Kemptville Agricultural School in 1941, he started working at Canada Starch in Cardinal, then went back to making cheese. In 1953 he began working at DuPont Canada Inc. at Maitland in the maintenance department, and in 1957 he moved to Brockville, where he built his own house. He retired in 1981.
He identified with St. James Anglican Church in Maitland and was a former member of St. John Ambulance, serving as an instructor and examiner, and a former member of Augusta Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and flowers. He went camping in his younger years. His home and family were very important to him.
In 1943, in Pembroke, Mr. Levere married Esther Dorothy Anne Burger, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Patricia Gordon of Sudbury and Sandra Levere of Toronto, and two grandchildren, Bill Gordon and friend Katie Mohamed and Jennifer Lalonde and husband Rob of Kingston.
He is survived by his brother Keith Levere and wife Marjorie of Toronto, sister Marleen Fogharty of Brighton and sister-in-law Helen Levere of Smiths Falls, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Levere was predeceased by a brother Herbert Levere and a sister Phyllis Gillespie (who both lived in Smiths Falls).
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 7 the funeral was held, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. Burial followed at St. James Cemetery, Maitland.
The pallbearers were Bill Gordon, Rob Lalonde, Jay gillespie, Hugh Gillespie, Wilson Levere and Fred Van Dyke.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre.
