Olive Adams, 93

Olive Florence Adams, 93, a retired nurse, died October 21, 2003, at Sherwood Park Manor, where she had lived since 1995.

She was born June 3, 1910, on the Isle of Wight, England, to Reginald William Lashmar and the former Florence Amy Bishop. She was educated on the Isle of Wight.

In 1929, when she was 19, she came to Canada with her mother and sister to join her father, who was working in Prescott. The family lived in Prescott.

That fall, she entered the nursing program at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital, then known as the Ontario Hospital. She won the medal for the highest marks for each of the three years she spent there and on graduation in 1932 not only won the gold medal for highest standing at that hospital but also attained the highest marks in all Ontario.

On September 10, 1932, she married Walter M. Adams and stayed home to raise her family. After more than two decades as a homemaker in Brockville, she re-entered the work force, nursing at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital for 10 years before retiring.

Mrs. Adams was exceedingly well read. Outside of her family, her main interests were books and cats.

She is survived by her children, daughter Sylvia, now of Ottawa, and son David, now of Dundas; six grandchildren, Scott Adams of Toronto, Craig Adams of Rossland, B.C., Jane Darling of Ottawa, Michael Darling of Hong Kong, Danny Darling of Guelph and Meridith Darling of Montreal; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Chung of Vancouver and Benjamin Chung and Michaela Chung of Ottawa; and one great-great-grandson, Brandon Chung of Ottawa.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter in October 1975; brother Stanley, who died at 16 months when she herself was only three; and a sister, Joyce Lashmar Holsgove, who died in 1987.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on October 24, before the funeral in the Barclay Chapel, where Rev. Allister Rose officiated. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

Memorial donations were directed to Sherwood Park Manor and were gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Edwin Baker, 65

Edwin Arnold Baker, 65, a retired millwright, died of cancer December 17, 2003 at St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital, Kingston. He had been ill for six years.

He was born in Smiths Falls on July 12, 1938, to Lawrence Baker and the former Lenna Raison. He grew up in the Portland area and attended high school in Smiths Falls and George Brown College in Toronto.

He married Betty Faye Cooper on February 28, 1964 in Smiths Falls, lived in Kingston and worked as a millwright. A member of the millwrights' union, local 1410, Kingston, he retired six years ago.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel. He was a member of the Deseronto Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 631.

Mr. Baker is survived by his wife Betty Faye Baker, son Jeff Baker and wife Cindy (nee VanderLinden) of Westbrook, and daughter Karen Joyner and husband Dale of Kingston, as well as two grandsons, one niece and five nephews.

Funeral arrangements were made through the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin. The funeral was held December 22 in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Connie McNamara, of Seeleys Bay United Church officiating. Burial followed at Harlem Cemetery.

Memorial donations were directed to Collins Bay Public School Playground Fund, care of the Limestone District School Board.

Strauta Zvigulis, 80

PRESCOTT -- Strauta Zvigulis, 80, died November 19, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born April 15, 1923 at Karva, Latvia, to Janis Malderis and Zelma Zviedritis. She escaped Latvia when the Germans invaded and ended up in a displaced persons camp, at Brunswick, Germany, where she met Harry Zvigulis, who was also from Latvia.

On September 7, 1947, she and Harry were married in Brunswick. They lived in Belgium for about three years and then, in 1951, immigrated to Canada.

She was a housewife and mother of two.

Always interested in home decorating, she enrolled in the St. Lawrence College craft and design program, graduating in 1978.

Her interests included arts, crafts, literature, her family and traveling.

Mrs. Zvigulis is survived by her husband, Harry Zvigulis of Prescott, daughter Anita of Prescott and son John of Oshawa, grandchildren Justin and Janis, sister Anna Ozolins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Arthur Malderis.

The funeral was held November 22 at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, with Pastor M. Kirsons officiating.

Burial followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Muriel Van Camp, 89

PRESCOTT -- Muriel Van Camp, 89, died December 10, 2003 at the Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott.

She was born Muriel Noella Kirker on July 10, 1914, in the Kirker home at McGregor's Corners, now Kirker Road in Matilda Township. She was the only daughter of John Kirker and his wife, the former Cora Bell Boyd. She was raised in the Hainsville home of her grandparents, William and Marjory Boyd, and attended public school in Hainsville and high school in Chesterville and South Mountain.

After graduating from high school, she worked at the Caldwell Linen Mills in Iroquois until her marriage.

On September 4, 1937 she married Frederick T. Van Camp at the home of her grandmother Boyd at Hainsville. In March 1938, the couple moved to Cardinal, where she lived until she moved to Wellington House on June 27, 2001.

Mrs. Van Camp worked at the Cardinal post office from March 1957 until her retirement July 9, 1979, by which time she was postmaster.

During the years her daughters were growing up, her main interests were her family and her church, where she taught Sunday school, was a CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training) leader and a member of the Live Wire Class.

In later years she was known for knitting mittens and socks and crocheting afghans for church bazaars, family and friends.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra and husband Lincoln Gardiner, of Kemptville, and Maxine Van Camp, of Cardinal; two grandchildren, Nanci and her husband Rob Ivory and Scott Gardiner and his wife Sherry; and three great-grandchildren, Holly, Elizabeth and Christopher Gardiner, all of Ottawa.

Also surviving are one nephew, Carter Van Camp of Iroquois; three nieces, Karen and husband Terry Murphy of Kingston, Lynda and husband John Dahm of Sydenham and Valerie Kampf of Fergus; and two sisters-in-law, Ruby Van Camp of Cardinal and Eileen Kirker of South Lancaster.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and brother Dalton Kirker.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, where on December 13 the funeral was held, with Rev. Geoffrey Howard, of St. Andrews/St. James Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Graham Van Camp, Kevin Van Camp, Gerry Schrader, Allan Brown, Matthew Brown and Daniel McLaughlin.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and St. John's United Church and St. Andrew's and St. James' Presbyterian Church memorial funds.

Dorothy Chapman

Dorothy Ellen Chapman, 81, died September 23, 2003 in Brockville.

She was born May 31, 1922, in North Elmsley to Harvey Brown of Wolford Township and the former Etta Johnston of Eastons Corners and was raised at Brandy Hill.

She came to Brockville in 1941. In 1953 she started working in the machine division at the Automatic Electric plant on Strowger Boulevard in Brockville and retired in 1980.

She identified with the Anglican Church and enjoyed baking, knitting and spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Bill Amonde, and her second, Gilbert Chapman, as well as her son Billy Amonde and granddaughter Tracey Sanger. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Keeble and Ernie Brown.

She is survived by three daughters, Beverley Shire of Amherstview and Winona Cooper and Veronica Chapman, both of Brockville, as well as 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers, Lloyd Brown of Jasper, Donald Brown of Perth and James Brown of Ottawa, and two sisters, Doreen Lewis and Edith Thornhill, both of Brockville.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on September 25 the funeral was held, with her grandson, Rev. Dale Scott Sanger, of Marmora Pentecostal Church, officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Billy Cooper, Kirk Francois, Bob Chapman, Dan Francois, Tim Watson and Gord Pearce.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
