Al Hewitt, 83

ATHENS -- Roy Alvin "Al" Hewitt, 83, of Glen Buell (RR 4, Brockville), died at his home on January 5, 2004.

He was born in Glen Buell on November 15, 1920 to Herbert Hewitt and the former Ella Davis. He went to school in Brockville, Forthton and Athens.

In May 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served until May 11, 1945, during the Second World War.

Following the war he enrolled in Queen's University and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in commerce and finance.

On March 29, 1946, he married Dorothy Graves in Toronto.

He joined IBM (International Business Machines) in 1949 and over the years lived in Toronto, Winnipeg, Windsor and Ottawa.

He was president of three companies: First Chicago Leasing, Canada Lease Financing Ltd. and Booth Computer World Trade Corporation. He retired only six years ago, in 1997.

Mr. Hewitt identified with the United Church. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club and the Ontario Club.

He also enjoyed skiing and sailing.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hewitt, son Mark Herbert Hewitt of Oakville and daughters Susan Grace Hewitt of Brockville and Margo De Jong and husband Henry of RR 4, Brockville, as well as four grandchildren, Jenna De Jong of RR 4, Brockville, and Trevor, Emma and Kathleen Hewitt, all of Toronto, and seven nieces/nephews.

Also surviving are his sister-in-law Lorraine Eastman and husband Warren of Caledonia, and brother-in-law Donald Graves and wife Mona of Vancouver.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Irving in infancy and Trevor Hewitt.

A private family service was held at Glen Elbe Cemetery, near Athens, and arrangements were made through the Judson Funeral Home, Athens.

Memorial donations were directed to the Wildlife Association.

Stanley Coville, 96

Stanley David Coville, a retired market gardener and farmer, died December 3, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital after a five-week illness. He was 96.

He was born May 4, 1907, at Fairfield to Gilford Coville and Grace Brown Coville. He was raised on the Bisseltown Road outside of Brockville and educated at Read's School.

He married Lela Baker December 3, 1930 in Maynard.

Mr. Coville had been retired for 30 years. He was affiliated with Bethel United Church and a member of St. James Masonic Lodge No. 74, Augusta, for over 60 years and was a past master.

He enjoyed fishing and duck hunting when his health and eyesight permitted. He also liked helping friends and neighbours with carpentry, plumbing, roofing and driving tractors. He helped keep the lodge in good repair during its early days and helped build the Bethel United Church hall.

When he sold his farm, he moved to Brockville to live with his daughter and son-in-law but spent every summer at his cottage on Snow Road, where he enjoyed receiving visitors.

Mr. Coville was predeceased by his parents, wife and brother Gordon Coville.

He is survived by his daughter June Pattenden and her husband, Ken, of Brockville, step-grandchildren Carol Baker and her husband Jim of Brockville, Christine McLaughlin and her husband Terry of Kingston and Gary Pattenden and his wife, Sue, of Lansdowne, and four step great-grandchildren.

The funeral was December 6 at the Barclay Chapel with Rev. Mark Arnill of Bethel United Church officiating. Interment followed at Oakland Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mel Campbell, Mike Knapp, Charlie Knapp, Dave Gill, Ralph Deir and Gary Pattenden.

Memorial donations were directed to St. James Lodge No. 74.

Gerald Thompson, 86

ELGIN -- Gerald Thompson, 86, of Newboro, a farmer who served both his community and his church, died suddenly at his home October 6, 2003 of cardiac arrest. He had been ill for some time.

Born Elswood Gerald Thompson on June 17, 1917 in Newboro, he was the son of Howard L. Thompson and the former Ella M. Rowswell. He was raised and educated in Newboro and attended high school.

On November 17, 1943, he married Muriel E. Taylor in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Newboro.

He farmed all his life until his retirement in 1980. He was elected a village councillor and served on the public school board. He was a school trustee during construction of Rideau Vista Public School in Westport.

Mr. Thompson was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church and served in several capacities: he was the church warden, a lay delegate to church synod and the cemetery overseer.

He loved sports and particularly enjoyed hockey, baseball and football.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel Thompson, and two sons, James H. Thompson and his wife Carol and Arthur G. Thompson and wife Marie, all of Newboro, as well as five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Ella Kennedy, of Kingston, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, on October 7. The funeral was held October 8 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, with Rev. James Clark officiating and Brother Thomas Dorward assisting. Burial followed at St. Mary's Anglican Church Cemetery.

The pallbearers were James and Bill Thompson, Tom Mallette, Jim Levatte, Thomas Ferrier and Stephen Dier. Honorary bearers were Jim and Ronald Barker, Lloyd Crabbe and Bruce Graham.

Memorial donations were directed to St. Mary's Church Memorial Fund, Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Westport Fire Department.

Edith Washbourne

Edith May Washbourne, 86, a homemaker who worked at Smart's works during the Second World War, died January 9, 2004 at St. Lawrence Lodge.

She was born in Chantry on June 24, 1917 to Charles Tristram and his wife, the former Mary Ellen Bibby.

She was raised and educated in Addison, Rocksprings, Frankville and the outlying area.

She married Thomas "Tom" Washbourne on March 20, 1935 in Frankville and moved to Brockville in 1940, during the war.

She lived at 13 Buell Street and worked at Smart's Manufacturing Company in the city during the war years.

The mother of three girls, she was primarily a homemaker. She identified with St. Paul's Anglican Church in Brockville and enjoyed crocheting afghans and making costume jewelry.

She also did a lot of baking and sewing.

Mrs. Washbourne is survived by her daughters, Verla Bunt and husband Jerold, and Barbara Johnson and husband Allan, all of Brockville, and Helen Winters of Huntsville, Alabama, as well as eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and two nieces.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband Tom on September 10, 2002, sister Helen Squibb, son-in-law Charles Winters and great-grandson David Lovell.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on January 12 the funeral was held, with Rev. Gordon Mintz, of St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiating.

The eulogy was given by Frances Merriman.

Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Wayne, David and Allan Bunt, Michael Johnson, Jason Bunt and Tabatha Johnson.

Memorial donations were directed to the Alzheimer Society.

Tom Beach, 48

Following a brief illness, Tom Beach, 48, of RR 2, Prescott, died suddenly and unexpectedly December 4, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

Born Thomas George Beach in Brockville on September 9, 1955, he was the son of Robert Philip Beach and the former Neva Georgina Campbell. He was educated at several different schools including Boundary, Maynard Public, South Grenville District High School and Algonquin College.

He lived in Prescott and near Maynard as a child and in Kingston and Smiths Falls as a young adult. He moved back to Brockville and then to RR 2, Prescott.

Over the years, Mr. Beach had several occupations. He worked at General Springs and at the RCA plant at Prescott, did some bartending and was a shipper/receiver at Woolco. In 1979 he joined Procter and Gamble as part of the first group hired and was still working there as a technician when he became ill.

On May 30, 1981 he married the former Terri-Lynn Hughes at Victoria United Church, Maynard. They had two daughters, Amy Lynn and Tara Michelle Beach, both of whom still live at home.

He was an accomplished dart player, horseshoe player, golfer, hunter, longtime seasonal camper at Pleasure Park Campground and a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 97, Prescott since the age of 18. Over the years he served in several executive positions including sports officer and third vice-president. His family was very important to him.

Besides his wife Terri and daughters Amy and Tara, he is survived by his brother Greg Beach and wife Bev of RR 1, Prescott, and by his sisters Carol Anne Giles of Smiths Falls, Diana Hodgkinson and husband Pat of North Augusta and Brenda Watt and husband Paul of Algonquin.

He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and great nephews, his parents-in-law Shirley and John Hughes, his brother-in-law Larry Hughes and his sister-in-law Kim Hughes.

He was predeceased by his father Robert Beach and by his mother Neva Beach, who lived at St. Lawrence Lodge until her death on July 1, 2003.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, on December 6 and 7 and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 97, Prescott held a memorial tribute at the funeral home on the 7th. The funeral was held at Victoria United Church, Maynard on December 8 with Rev. Mark Arnill, a close family friend, officiating. Burial was at Maynard Cemetery.

Acting as bearers were Greg Beach, Tyler Beach, Larry Hughes, Jerry Spicer, Ted Spicer and Paul Bertrand. Tyler Hughes was an honorary bearer.

Memorial donations to The Victoria United Church Sunday School or the Canadian Diabetes Association will be gratefully acknowledged.
