PRESCOTT -- Guiseppe "Joe" Florio, a retired construction worker, died at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital on January 23, 2004 just two days before his 86th birthday.
He was born January 25, 1918, in Itally, in the province of Reggio di Calabria, in a town called Semenara. His parents were Carmelo Florio and the former Angela Francica.
He was married about 1953 to Saveria "Sara" Rugnetta. They immigrated to Canada about 1954 and ended up in Welland. for a short time, where he worked as a mechanic. The family moved to Prescott for a couple of years and then went to live in Montreal for a couple more years. Finally, in about 1958 he settled his family in Prescott. He worked on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Highway 401 and later as a cement finisher and general contractor in the construction industry. At the time of his retirement, about 1983, he was working for Motor Coils in Brockville.
His interests included his family, fishing, gardening and building. He also repaired sewing machines. In the mid-1970s he returned to Italy for a visit.
Mr. Florio is survived by his wife Sara Florio of Prescott; son Carmen and wife Jennifer of Prescott; two daughters, Angela Florio of Ottawa and Mary Florio Danis and husband Paul of Ottawa, and one grandson, Tony.
He was predeceased by his parents, a brother Carmelo (who lived in Kitchener) and brothers and a sister in Italy.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on January 24. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott, on January 26, with Father John Appelman officiating. Burial will be at St. Mark's Cemetery, Prescott, in the spring.
The pallbearers were his son Carmen Florio, grandson Tony Florio, son-in-law Paul Danis, good friend Carmen Maggio, Kevin Mallard and Ray Armstrong.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital.
Marie France Duclos, 51
Marie France Duclos, 51, formerly of Brockville, died October 28, 2003 at her home in Nepean. She had been ill with cancer for two years.
Born November 17, 1951, in Brockville, she was the daughter of Roch Duclos and the former Brigitte Sicotte. She attended St. Francis Xavier school, St. Mary School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.
She first married Kent Humphrey; after a divorce she married Kenny Morris, who died 10 years ago. She was married to Vic Nicol about a week before her death.
She worked as a technician and as a waitress over the years, retiring five years ago. She enjoyed volunteering with different charities, going to car races and playing darts.
Ms. Duclos is survived by two sons, Jay Humphrey of Aylmer, Que., and Shawn Guy Morris of Perth, and one daughter, Tanya Anthony (nee Humphrey), as well as two grandchildren.
Also surviving are her mother, Brigette Duclos of Brockville; two brothers, Serge Duclos of Oshawa and Jean Marc Duclos of Brockville; and two sisters, Raymonde Dickey of Brockville and Christiane Duclos of Lansdowne; as well as a sister-in-law, Brenda Duclos of Toronto, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her father and a brother, Jean Guy Duclos.
Arrangements were made through an Ottawa funeral home. A memorial service was held November 1 at her mother's home in Brockville, with Rev. Roland Glendinning, retired minister, officiating. Following cremation, burial was at Hope Cemetery, Ottawa.
Jack Fox, 87
A lifelong resident of the Prescott area, John Clifford "Jack" Fox, 87, died January 16, 2004 at Wellington House, Prescott, after a long illness.
He was born October 14, 1916 in Maitland to Robert Fox and the former Grace Barton and was raised and educated in the Maitland area.
In 1938 he married the former Marion Docteur. Following her death he married the former Olive Alguire, who also predeceased him. In 1977 he married Willow Hough, who survives.
Mr. Fox was self-employed, operating a scrap iron and metal business. He never really retired from working, but in the mid-1970s he purchased property at RR 1, Prescott in the Maynard area. He loved working on his land and buying and selling farm equipment such as backhoes and tractors.
He was also an avid card player and enjoyed spending time at a cottage on Graham Lake.
He is survived by his wife Willow Fox, who lives at the Mayfield Residence in Prescott; his daughter Barbara Coville and husband Floyd of Prescott; and stepsons Glen Coville and wife Dort and Ronnie Coville, as well as grandchildren Beth Evans and husband Glen, Darrin Coville and wife Carla and Todd Coville, and four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are six sisters, Hazel Kirkland of Ottawa, Eliza Reid, Lucy Wing, Evelyne Plant and husband Ed, and Lulla Rennick, all of Brockville, and Beatrice Smith of Maitland; brothers Harry Fox and wife Vi of Maitland and Charlie Fox and wife Edna of RR 3, Prescott; a favourite nephew Richard Brown and several other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a great-grandchild, Ian Coville, and by brothers Gordon, Mansell and Elmer Fox and sisters Margaret and Mildred.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, where on January 18 the funeral was held, with Pastor Phil Phillips of Maynard United Pentecostal Church officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The pallbearers were Richard Brown, Glen Kirkland, Edward Warren, Darren Coville, Todd Coville and Roger Wing.
Memorial donations to Maynard United Pentecostal Church and Wellington House Nursing Home Palliative Care were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Estelle Richard, 66
Estelle Marie Richard, 66, a retired medical laboratory technologist, died of cancer February 6, 2004 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, after a six-month illness.
She was born in Laval des Rapides, Que. on November 14, 1937 to Hercule Paiement and his wife, Yvette Rochon, and was raised and educated in the Montreal area.
She studied laboratory technology, specializing in hematology and graduated with an ART degree. She worked in Montreal as a technologist in a medical laboratory, specializing in hematology. In 1969-70, she worked abroad in Tunisia for one and a half years, sponsored by the Government of Canada. There she taught laboratory technology (particularly hematology) in the main hospital in Tunis.
She moved to Brockville in 1976 and on July 7, 1979 married Roy I. Richard in Kingston. She retired from laboratory work in 1984.
Mrs. Richard identified with the Catholic Church and was a member of the Brockville Country Club. She enjoyed golf, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved Brockville and made many friends here.
She is survived by her husband, son Dr. Roy Joseph Richard of Alexandria, daughters Karen Jill Gerritsen of Whitby and Kimberly Jean Richard of Scarborough, and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents (her mother died in 1992).
Cremation was arranged through the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on February 7 and 8 friends were received. There was no funeral.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Charles Leach, 68
SMITHS FALLS -- Charles Harvey Leach, 68, died at the Smiths Falls hospital on December 29, 2003.
He was born in Smiths Falls on March 11, 1935, the youngest of 10 children of Arthur Leach and the former Pearl Adeline Moore. He attended public and high schools in Smiths Falls.
After high school, he worked at Wire Rope Industries for 19 years, until the company relocated to Pointe Claire, Que. Then he joined the staff of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and worked there until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived by his wife Bernice Leach, nee McConnell, whom he married on August 6, 1958, and by their five children, Rick and wife Anne McKenna, Larry and wife Cindy Wallace, Jacqueline, Roy and wife Bev Davis and Cathy Maley and husband Ken, as well as four grandchildren, Sean, Katie, Kristain and Jimi Leach. Also surviving is his sister Mildred Leach.
He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Doris (in infancy) and Jacqueline Thompson, and six brothers, Kenneth, Roy (during the Second World War) John, James, Howard, and Donald (in infancy).
The funeral was held December 31 in St. John's Anglican Church, Smiths Falls, with Rev. Jim Roberts officiating and Rev. Francis Gooch and Rev. Atwell assisting. Rev. Albert Hoppins delivered the eulogy. Burial followed at Saint Bedes' Cemetery in Montague Township.
The pallbearers were two nephews, George and Kenneth Thompson; three brothers-in-law, John, Donald and Thomas McConnell; and longtime friend Lionel Morris.
Memorial donations were directed to St. John's and St. Bedes churches.
