'Alt' McIvor, 90

SPENCERVILLE -- 'Alt' McIvor died at St. Lawrence Lodge on Tuesday, March 23, at the age of 90, 2004.

Lawrence Alton McIvor was born January 28, 1914, in Spencerville. Raised in Spencerville, he was the son of Arnold McIvor and Kathleen Dove. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Second World War for four years.

Following the war, Mr. McIvor married Nina Cunning on July 10, 1947, and they settled in the Roebuck area. He worked as a cattle dealer until his retirement.

He lived in Roebuck until ill health forced him to move to St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville. While at St. Lawrence Lodge he made many friends and will be fondly remembered by the staff.

He was predeceased by his wife Vernina 'Nina' (Cunning). He is survived by his sister, Donna Dillabough (Lloyd) of Amherstview and several nieces and nephews. As well as his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Madeline Kavanaugh and Olive Kavanaugh, and his brothers Bernard and Lloyd McIvor.

Visitation for Mr. McIvor was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, on Thursday, March 25 from 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, March 26, in the chapel of the funeral home with Father Rob Arsenault officiating.

Miriam Woodland was the organist and Nora Whaley was the soloist. The eulogy was provided by Donna Dillabough.

The pallbearers were John Ruigrok, Bram Couperous, Stan Jordan, Kevin St. John, Tim Kavanaugh and Steve Kavanaugh. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged.

Dorothy Quinn, 80

PRESCOTT -- Dorothy Margaret Mary Quinn, 80, died at the Mayfield Retirement Home in Prescott on March 30, 2004.

She was born January 29, 1924 in Edwardsburgh Township, near Spencerville, the daughter of John Mitten and the former Helen Delaney.

She spent her working years as a bookkeeper with the Department of Transport in Prescott, before moving to Brockville after her marriage to Paul Quinn on August 23, 1952 at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Spencerville.

She was involved in the Catholic Women's League, worked as a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and took an active interest in a variety of political endeavours. She served in several capacities during federal and provincial elections over the years.

Mrs. Quinn was predeceased by her husband Paul, a longtime employee of Bell Canada.

She is survived by her daughter Karen of Toronto, her son Wayne and his wife Terri of Dartmouth, N.S., and her son Brian of Victoria, B.C., as well as two grandchildren, Katie and Sean of Dartmouth.

Also surviving are two brothers, Peter Mitten of the Mayfield Residence in Prescott and Frank Mitten of Brockville, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on April 1. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Church, Prescott, on April 2, with Father John Appelman as celebrant. Brian Quinn delivered a tribute at the conclusion of the Mass.

A committal service will be held at a later date in the spring. The pallbearers were Sean Quinn, John and Tom Mitten, Tom, David and Stephen Maville and John Shahan.

Donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care at St. Vincent de Paul and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Lionel Coates, 92

PRESCOTT -- Former dairy farmer Lionel Coates, 92, who retired to Charleville before moving to Ottawa, died March 20, 2004 at Elizabeth Bruyere Centre, Ottawa.

He was born October 20, 1911 at Bury, Que., the son of Walter Coates and the former Isle Downes.

He married Verley Martin on June 30, 1939 in Bury.

Until his retirement he owned and operated a dairy farm in Bury, then retired to a hobby farm north of Charleville.

At the time of his death he resided in Ottawa.

Mr. Coates is survived by his sons, Lee Coates and wife Frances and Verne Coates, and grandchildren Danny, Tracy and Michael.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home on March 21.

The funeral was held in the Slater Chapel on March 22, with Pastor Phil Phillips officiating.

Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Danny and Michael Coates and Ian Stakervicius.

Edna Todd, 87

CARDINAL -- Edna Pearl Todd, 87, died October 3, 2003 at Wellington House, Prescott.

She was born February 27, 1916 at Hainsville to Ernest Fader and the former Mabel Gilmour. When she was 18, her family moved to the Point at Iroquois and she worked as a weaver at the Caldwell Linen Mill.

On July 26, 1941, she married Kenneth Todd in Williamsburg and moved to Cardinal, where she helped care for her ailing father-in-law.

She was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, quilted with a group of church women and belonged to the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 105.

She enjoyed gardening and her home was adorned with many plants. She gave her preserves, pickling and baking to her family, who always said her apple pie was second to none.

Mrs. Todd is survived by her daughter DeeDee and husband Garry Kavanaugh of Cardinal; son Randy and wife Leslie of Prescott; grandchildren Jackie and husband Terry Kirkey, Nancy and husband Danny Bueto, and Matthew, Michael and Katie Todd; and great-grandchildren Tara and Todd Kirkey and Tracey and Tyler Bueto.

She is also survived by her brothers Kenneth and Ernest Fader and by a sister Nelda Brown and sister-in-law Jenny Fader.

She was predeceased by her husband Ken in 1990, her brother Cecil Fader and sister Gladys Gill.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, on October 5. The funeral was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, on October 6, with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating. Burial followed at St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Cardinal.

The pallbearers were Sheldon Gill, Ralph Dukelow, Arnold Fader, Bob McDonald, Terry Kirkey and Danny Bueto.

Donations to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Lung Association were gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Eileen Scott, 86

CARDINAL -- A lifetime resident of the Cardinal area, Eileen Scott, 86, died March 10, 2004 at the Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott.

She was born Fern Eileen Gillmoure on Septemer 1, 1917 in Shanly, the second of seven children born to John Gillmoure and the former Mae McFadden. She spent her childhood on the farm in Shanly and helped with all the farm-related chores. She enjoyed family musical gatherings in the parlour on Sunday evenings, where she and her sister Dora would play guitar and the family would sing.

On June 16, 1937, she married Donald "Bud" Scott, became a farmer's wife and lived on the Scott family farm north of Cardinal. She raised three children and spent her days working hard on the farm, helping with milking the cows, sewing and knitting clothes for her children and maintaining a produce garden until she was 80.

Each summer she hosted a corn roast for her sisters and brothers and their families, serving produce from her garden, including musk melons. In summers, she picked raspberries with help from her children and nieces. She also enjoyed going to the huckleberry marsh to pick wild blueberries.

She liked playing cards, watching hockey on television, family get-togethers and fall family trips. She also travelled with her husband to the Maritimes, Hawaii, Florida, Georgia and Moosonee. After his death in 1984, she travelled with friends to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, western Canada, California and Atlantic City.

She enjoyed hotdogs and monthly trips to the casino in Hull until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. A year later she moved to Wellington House Nursing Home, where she lived the rest of her life.

She took many photographs over the years and always managed to keep her albums up to date. She would spend hours looking over these photos. She enjoyed Gillmoure family reunions.

She is survived by two daughters, Ann Gill and husband Sheldon of Cardinal and Donna Veltkamp and husband Bill of RR 1, Cardinal, four grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her four sisters, Desta Prosser and husband Ron of Cardinal, Dora Cook of Cardinal, Jean King and husband Clarence King Jr. of Spencerville and Marguerite Barton of Prescott, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son, John Chester "Jackie" Scott, suddenly in 1972; two brothers, Mansel and Lennis Gillmoure; brothers-in-law Milburn Cook and Earl Barton and sister-in-law Marjorie Gillmoure.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, where on March 12 the funeral was held, with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiating. The eulogy was given by Nancy Lefebre; Tom Gill sang two solos. Burial followed at St. Andrews and St. James Cemetery, Cardinal.

The pallbearers were Dale Cook, Richard Barton, Roger King and Howard, John and David Gillmoure. The honorary pallbearers were Bill and Doug Veltkamp and Sheldon, Trevor, Todd and Paul Gill.

Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Leeds and Grenville, the Wellington House Activity Fund or Wellington House Palliative Care will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
